Garry is the new manager of the Yuma Panthers (the recently renamed Scorpions) of the independent North American League. This means he'll be returning to his old spring stomping grounds at Desert Sun Stadium and the Kroc Sports Complex out in Yuma. He replaces outgoing manager and former steroid filled MLB slugger Jose Canseco.

DOn't I know It

I reported it briefly in my Ballpark Experience post, didn’t realize anyone else was interested. I work at that Stadium daily, doing sound and public address. Templeton manages the winter league scorpions right now too.

Canseco gone is a welcome change in Yuma, but the new owners changing it to Panthers is not very popular at all. Scorpions had a great logo and name chosen by the community. Panthers is generic and not relevent to Yuma other than it was the name of a minor league team in 1950.

I guess I can understand why they changed it however.

The Scorpions attendance had falling pretty drastically and the organization itself had definitely left a black mark on the community in 2010 when the then owners went pretty much belly up and stopped paying players, staff and contracts. I understand the desire of the new owners to start fresh even if their choice of name isn’t the best (even if tied to Yuma baseball history). Hopefully Templeton helps with that. More of a serious baseball man vs the sideshow that is Jose Canseco. I’m definitely going to be driving out to Yuma for a game or two this year.

the quote the new vp used when asked about Canseco....

“we won’t be bringing the circus to town”

The whole league has had some turmoil, and Yuma has an…interesting..relationship when it comes to baseball. I’ll be glad to talk about some of the stories
When you come out this way, let me know- I’m hoping to be working for the Panthers this summer. The new owners representative was in today and seemed to like my work, but didn’t want to step on the toes of the people who normally work summer, so we’ll see.
So how did you come across this article anyway, just out of curiosity?

It was on ballpark digest

They do a good job of following the developments in the NAL. From there it was just a matter of reading the Yuma Sun to get the full story.

Speaking of which

Have you seen what the new logo and uni look like?

Its purple and some have likened it to the Penn State Logo

because it basically is! So i hope they change it and that was just a mockup for the press conference announcing the name change. Uniforms haven’t been released yet that I know of.

Have you ever seen the Scorpions logo or unis? I really liked the logo. Unis similar to D-Bags sedona red , gold numbering.

and

the scorpionslogo

Wow yeah that logo will never survive to opening day.

Hell it’ll never survive to March. That’s one of the most blatant cases of copyright and trademark infringement I’ve ever seen.

Yeah I always liked the Scorpions logo

But I’ve also seen far worse than the new Panthers one. I think it’ll work out ok in the end. As nice as the Scorpions one was, it and the team identity did come with a lot of baggage.
