Mentor is in the process of re-evaluating the food options at Petco Park. If you've ever eaten at Petco Park, you know that they have food, but I would defy you to say that they have any "signature" items. He's asked Gaslamp Ball to help figure out what brands he should be going after and what he should be emulating.
First on our culinary tour is the hamburger.
If you know Padres history, you know that Ray Kroc loathed hot dogs. Little sausages shaped things packed full of who knows what. Owning the Padres must have been a constant source of nausea for the former owner, having to see thousands (or hundreds as it were) of fans shoving hot dogs into their mouths one or two at a time.
If there was one thing he loved, it was burgers. And as it so happens, it's the first thing that Mentor asked about.
Personally, I've never been to Rocky's but Mentor tweeted a Hodad's photo shortly thereafter. I love me some Hodad's. So have at it. What's the best burger in San Diego?
Other things that Mentor's curious about that we can discuss now or later:
Notably absent from the list... Anything having to do with breakfast. HMMMMMMMMMM...

I'll get it started
Jumbo Jack. Beef & Bun. O’Brothers (depending on the chef). Any variation of Tijuana deli style hamburgers served at Mexican restaurants (or the really nice one at El Take It Easy).
Dex - January 10, 2012
I personally don’t like Hodad’s. I know, I’m crazy. Their burgers are so thin! If I wanted 8 pounds of toppings, I’d go wild at Fuddrucker’s.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
I think Hodad's is overated
I love Liar’s club when they were in Mission Beach.
Ron Mexico - January 10, 2012
Blasphemy!
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
Rocky's of course
AIChief - January 10, 2012
amen
Rocky’s is a life altering experience
justdave - January 10, 2012
I am a horrible person who lived on the opposite corner from Rocky's for two years and never went.
I really should fix that.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
Not the best burger in town, but I’d support an In n Out inside of Petco.
Imissburritos - January 10, 2012
That'll never happen

Rockys
also, Crazee Burger is legit.
justdave - January 10, 2012
Crazee Burger is pretty damn good
sdchicken - January 10, 2012
I love Hodad's, but there's already one downtown.
Also, any burger with a fried egg on top. And bacon. Because it’s Breakfasttown.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
I was thinking they should just do a breakfast place
Breakfast for dinner is in these days anyway. I’d eat some french toast at a game.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Hodads
Is the best burger I have ever had, and its a the perfect comfort food. I don’t expect a lot of comfort will be needed as I expect a 162-0 season. That said, should the unthinkable happen and we lose a game at home. I don’t want to have to walk all the way to 10th and Broadway to get me a little piece of meaty, cheesey, ketchup & Mustardy, Pickley heaven.
MrDanielX - January 10, 2012
What about the Rory Burger at Corvette
Peanut Butter for extra protein.
Dex - January 10, 2012
Did you go to Rory's?
It was a burger place in Mission Valley I think and their claim to fame was that PB burger
matthewverygood - January 10, 2012

I knew a girl worked there.

Five Guys...

That's not a local place
Also, In N Out is better.

It is local...
there is one at Liberty Station…and also, In & Out sux…move along, nothing to see here.
Jsn L - January 10, 2012

Ron Mexico - January 10, 2012
You must love peanuts
Dex - January 10, 2012
I do. I love salty nuts in my mouth
and my fries cooked in peanut oil.
In-n-Out is really good, but 5 guys has juicy burgers, better buns, and WAAAY better fries.
Ron Mexico - January 10, 2012
I HATE IN-N-OUT FRIES!
kevintheoman - January 10, 2012
The fries are much better if you order them well done.
But that’s beside the point. The burgers are better at In-n-Out, and that’s what matters.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
They do smell like body odor
jbox - January 10, 2012
this is my only complaint of IN-NOut
for a fast food burger shop. Good+ Burgers, good shakes, horrible fries.
Ron Mexico - January 10, 2012
Five Guys is good, but In N Out is better.
And Five Guys is more of an East Coast thing, even though it seems like there’s a new one popping up in San Diego county all the time.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
Five Guys was the most disappointing foodstuff I've ever crammed in my blasphemy hole.
Everybody is all firmed up about it and I finally went there about five years ago…
I just don’t see what the big deal is. I guess I’m spoiled by my own burgers. I rule.

I’ve only had their shake, but hear the burgers are good
matthewverygood - January 10, 2012

Darklighter - January 10, 2012
Other curiousities
Margarita- I don’t like much, but I hear that Freds in Old Town has good ones.
Pizza- Tie between Bronx Pizza and Luigi’s IMHO
Craft Beer- Anything from Ballast Point or Stone… I hear Pizza Port is good, never had.
Guacamole- I hate guac, which earns me shun face from my San Diego friends.
Tacos- Mama Testa’s by far. Their fish tacos are wildly expensive and worth every penny.
BBQ- Phils is good. So good I never try anything else.
MrDanielX - January 10, 2012
Luigi’s. YES.
They already have Stone on tap at Petco Park. Ballast Point on tap would be AMAZING.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
Odd story that someone told me that might be true
Luigi was one of the original owners of Bronx and left (taking the recipe, essentially) to start his own place. This is why the pizza is equally as good as Bronx’s.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
I've actually never had Bronx Pizza. PLEASE NOBODY HIT ME.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
I'll take you some time
I think it’s a little better than Luigi’s, but it’s pretty close.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Agreed, I like it a little better than Luigis
But they don’t serve beer. ;-(
MrDanielX - January 10, 2012
Yeah
There’s good reason for that.
For one, they obviously don’t want to pay for the liquor license because they’re run as cheaply as possible (making them a perfect match for the Padres!). This is why they’re cash-only and have a shady accountant.
For two, they try and get as many people in as possible. This means getting as many people out as quickly as possible. They don’t like when you hang around for a while.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Bronx is very ok to me...
I think I prefer deep dish style, but my favorite for that in town is Lefty’s which is a Cubs place and we can’t have that in the ballpark.
Dex - January 10, 2012
I prefer deep dish too,
but yeah, what you said.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
Deep dish?
What is wrong with you people?
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
Agreed.
Jordan_Ming - January 10, 2012
This isn't my quote, so don't kill the messenger
“But if deep dish is your favorite pizza, then you don’t like pizza.”
Wonko - January 10, 2012
Rec'd!
Deep dish is nothing but bread with some pizza toppings put on it. If you can’t fold it, it’s not true pizza.

John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
I do.
MrDanielX - January 10, 2012

Darklighter - January 10, 2012
You're forgiven
They are cash only which in this day and age can be a hassle. But man are they good.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
It was on tap last year
in that craft beer section
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Well shit.
Where was I?
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
Never, ever at the spot
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
I was there a few times.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
Well it was around the corner from the the spot
They also had Karl Strauss, I believe. There were multiple varieties from Ballast Point. Calico, for sure. I think either Big Eye, Black Marlin or both. They’ve had the Pale Ale (formerly known as Yellow Tail) at the bar area in the Mercado since before that, I believe. Don’t think I ever saw Sculpin or Wahoo.
Wonko - January 10, 2012
Wahoo was there, and Big Eye and either Calico or Scuplin, forget which.
Axion - January 10, 2012
I had Calico at Petco multiple times
So it was definitely there.
Wonko - January 10, 2012
I've had Calico, Wahoo and Pale Ale there
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Why not make their own beer?
I told Neil the Beerman that Padres should make their own brew. PETCO Porter.
bcline760 - January 10, 2012
The Rockies do this
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Yes!
I say get Mission to do it, what with the proximity to the park and all.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
I feel Corey Brock needs to get behind this
SolanaFan - January 11, 2012
Just as long as he doesn't tweet about it often
Some people have very high standards when it comes to their Twitter feed.
Friar Fever - January 11, 2012
All of these things
Although this place has amazing BBQ, is dog-friendly (which seems up the PETCO alley) and has an awesome patio with a giant screen for sports-watching.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
I feel like Randy Jones is all the BBQ Petco Park needs. But that's just me.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
This is why I think Phil's (or any other place) will never get in
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
I wish it was a little more legit
It doesn’t seem like pulled pork should be as expensive as it is.
Dex - January 10, 2012
Two birds with one stone...
Can’t go wrong with some Pizza Port pizza and beer. Ballast Point would be awesome as well. They should do something in the center field park area to incorporate all the local beer.
pbnative - January 10, 2012
I feel like
You couldn’t replicate Pizza Port pizza with the cooking equipment you have at the park since I imagine all pizza gets cooked on location at Petco.
Wonko - January 10, 2012
I think you could
Actually Pizza Port would be the reasonable alternative to do both pizza and beer.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012

MrDanielX - January 10, 2012
It's making me hungry too. FOR BASEBALL. And also burgers.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
I have a horrible conference call in 10 minutes or I would be...
Trying to score some breakfast.
MrDanielX - January 10, 2012
I think we can all agree
Getting some legitimate tacos/burritos/nachos in the stadium should be a higher priority than the burgers.
Put some Lolita’s IN the ballpark. Finding fish tacos is way harder at PETCO than it should be.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
I dunno what happened to Rubio's
But they should bring Rubio’s back and only allow fish tacos. Forget the other options. Rubio’s fish tacos and that’s it.
Dex - January 10, 2012
Did they replace Rubio's with those kinda generic Mexican food places?
Or were those always there and I just never noticed them before?
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
I think they did
Those places suck and there’s not enough of them.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012

Richard Wade - January 10, 2012
Rubios definitely needs to come back. They're not the best, but they're iconic.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
Street tacos as an option would be nice too...
Jsn L - January 10, 2012
This and Dex's
Rubio’s Taco Shop. Fish or street tacos. Maybe margaritas.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Legit margaritas...
not the shiznit they serve now.
Jsn L - January 10, 2012
Rubios seems so... mediocre.
Its fine afterwork on Tuesday… but I think we can do better for tacos.
Mama Testa is expensive… wouldn’t even have to raise prices for the park.
If we want something cheaper… anything than ends with -bertos.
MrDanielX - January 10, 2012
A 'Bertos on every corner!
StrangeBroP25 - January 10, 2012
This is a requirement.
Either before or after every game I go to, I always try to hit up Lolita’s. Mmmmmmm
bcline760 - January 10, 2012
Too bad Lolita's isn't always open when games are over.
At least three times last season I tried to go there after a game and the kitchen was already closed.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
Valentine's is pretty much on par and similar cost
You ever make that the second option? (between 8th and 9th on Market)
Wonko - January 10, 2012
I like the laughter that the idea of "Breakfast Town" creates...
(and a couple mentions were made above)
But it would be cool if they just opened a restaurant called Breakfasttown. We could enjoy scrambled eggs drowning in Tapatio sauce. And then laugh that Breakfasttown has been made official.
AIChief - January 10, 2012
I support this idea wholeheartedly.
And we should get Mentor to sell GLB shirts there.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
OMG If I could score one of their "Breakfast at the Park"
Hash/Scrabbles they have DURING a game. I would be in heaven.

Food trucks.
I don’t know how to pull it off, but SD loves food trucks.

The problem with some of these hamburger choices
is that they are already like 8-10 bucks at their location. You bring them into the ballpark and you’ve got easily 12-15 bucks. I want an affordable burger that’s why I think I’d like just a jumbo jack or something.
jbox - January 10, 2012
I actually think a JITB in the ballpark would be pretty awesome
But nobody would go anywhere else. And they’d run out of tacos every game.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
I wouldn't want them to serve their tacos.
A. We already get free taco coupons.
B. They’d probably have to mark up the price for them, and I wouldn’t pay more than what they already cost for those.
C. I’d rather have tacos from somewhere else.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012

mrbarneydangles - January 10, 2012
Thats a tasty burger
Oh man, I do love me some burgers. Depends on what type of burger you want though:
-Nicky Rotten’s. My personal favorite. Since this is breakfast town, their breakfast burger is life changing. Its a bit big and you feel like you have a brick in your stomach though.
-Hodads-Great crunchy, tasty burger. A really good option since they have opened a 2nd location and you dont have to wait 1 hour in line at the OB one.
-Crazy Burger. Tons of options; and always solid. I’ve had a gator burger and boar burger there. Who’s feeling frisky?
-Five Guys/In-and-Out: Both are really good but Five Guys really likes to let everyone know that they are good. Did you know they have been in magazines? I get it.
Of course there is Rocky’s, Canadian Steak Burger (dont sleep!), and even Waterfront and the Bareback Grill have good options.
L Magico - January 10, 2012
Canada Steak Burger would attract homeless into the stadium
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Nicky Rotten's
very good, very different
Hormel - January 10, 2012
They really need Oscar's breadsticks
even if they charged double I’d still buy it. Half a dozen breadsticks for 6 bucks? OK!
Also, I love the clam chowder in the sourdough bowl. They could start selling it at more than Anthony’s in the mercado and turn it into a signature item. It’s like $7 and it fills me up (I’m a morbidly obese ogre).
kevintheoman - January 10, 2012

The corporate owned ones are still in business but not the franchise owned
or maybe I have that backwards. But there are still quite a few open still.
kevintheoman - January 10, 2012
unnecessary extra use of the word still
I wish we could edit posts
kevintheoman - January 10, 2012
We still can't
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Don't worry...
I’m from the Department of Redundancy Department.
Jsn L - January 10, 2012
It's cause it's all bread
Pure starch and carbohydrates.

Hodad's for beef
Crazee Burger for everything else…
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
Burgers
I don’t want an in n out there anymore bc I wouldn’t want to pay an outrageous price for it. And Its not exactly local but SmashBurger would be amazing! Even though there’s one a couple blocks from the ballpark.
crazy_charisma - January 10, 2012 via mobile
Smashburger is great for a chain, way better than overrated In-N-Out
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
BANNED
Dex - January 10, 2012
Actually Ban revoked
You not being at In-n-Out means less lines for me.
Dex - January 10, 2012
More power to you
Enjoy the little burger with bible verse. I’m going to get a real burger.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
There needs to be a anti-rec button.
MrDanielX - January 10, 2012
I’m down with smashburger even though it’s not local. I feel like “ballpark version of smashburger” would be a sad thing, though.
Axion - January 10, 2012
All for Smashburger
Still go there all the time in Clifton
TheFan09 - January 10, 2012
I like Smashburger
One of my new favorites IF I can’t make it to In n Out.
BUMMER that they get In n Out at the ballpark – there is really nothing more So Cal than that. All my east cast friends make a point of visiting one when they get out here for the first time. Friends from Wisconsin just went & raved.
Now I am curious about this Rocky’s place…and..well..I’ve gotta admit never been to Hodad’s yet either!
Christina - January 10, 2012
Just change the cups for the margaritas.
I feel bad for the people making them and carrying them around and I shouldn’t be the one feeling bad, they should.
You’re not going to settle on one craft beer here. Instead we should push out the crappy national brands, especially Coors. That’s a division rival.
Axion - January 10, 2012
True...
plus they seem like margarita shooters instead of straight up margaritas.
Jsn L - January 10, 2012
I'd love it if they just had a big grill out at the Park
They you want a dog or a burger they cook it for you right there. Instead of the fried or boiled dogs.
jbox - January 10, 2012
Oh god... so much this.
Baseball and hot dogs go together like… baseball and hot dogs. Yet, the dogs at the park are so shitty. Why is it impossible to find a nice plump, juicy, grilled dog at the ballpark?
theodore donald kerabatsos - January 10, 2012
Ray Kroc's legacy
Dex - January 10, 2012
I have to agree
A nice grilled dog or sausage would be money.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
mmm
I’m just imagining the smell of an actual grill with hot dogs or burgers cooking in a game
Nater Tater - January 10, 2012
Small Bar's Baja Burger gives me a PFOB
It’s got jalapenos, avacado, little tortilla strips, some kind of tomatillo sauce, and pepperjack cheese. And they grind the meat in house which makes a HUGE difference.
Quality Social makes damn good burgers too.
theodore donald kerabatsos - January 10, 2012
and cinnamon rolls
matthewverygood - January 10, 2012
Small Bar/Hamilton's make great burgers. But they're not suited to ballpark kitchens.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
I've had a great one at Neighborhood
and The Corner is also great.
Just make bar kitchens everywhere! PROBLEM SOLVED!
Axion - January 10, 2012
The Corner's is very good
Hamilton’s burgers and grill-cheese blow my mind fairly consistently, but there’s no chance it’d work at Petco.
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Solution: Get the Pad Squad to run in orders from Neighborhood. God, I haven't been to Neighborhood in months...
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
Jalapeno Mac & Cheese seems like it could work at Petco
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
True.
It’s good but I think I could make it better.
Axion - January 10, 2012
Open a stand at Petco Park.

That seems like the perfect baseball food.

Ohter curiousities
Margarita – meh they’re all margarita mix and tequilla. Where ever is serving them today is the best.
Pizza – Thin is Bronx, thicker go Oggis.
Craft Beer – Green Flash (specifically Hop Head Red which is just perfection)
Guacamole – Avocado is disgusting, stick to salsa.
Tacos – I’m partial to Rubios Fish Tacos since they brought back the Alaskan fish.
BBQ – Phils… period.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
They did Oggi's before.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
Avocado is disgusting!?!?! ... BANNED!!!!

John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Yep.
I like trader joes guacamole though. not too bad
Jordan_Ming - January 10, 2012
Took me several years of living here to learn to like it.
No one in the northeast even knows what an avocado tastes like.
theodore donald kerabatsos - January 10, 2012
Lived in California 28 of 30 years
And I’ve still never learned to love them. It must be genetic, I was born in Virginia from a family entirely consisting of New Englanders. Just not wired to love that green thing and anything that comes from it.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
But in the burritos and like rolled tacos and stuff
Don’t you specifically have to ask them to remove the guacamole?
Dex - January 10, 2012
I do
It’s a pain in the ass. More than once I’ve forgotten to and then nearly gagged on guac.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012

What do you put in there? Or like street tacos?
Dex - January 10, 2012
I do
I just put a really spicy salsa there instead.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
I don't like avocado
For burritos I go California. Steak, fries and cheese. Maybe leave in the pico de gallo if I’m feeling frisky.

athletics68 - January 10, 2012
You know what's better than either
Bacon grease. If you’re going to put fat on stuff, put the best. Eggs over easy cooked in bacon grease should be a staple of Breakfast in the Park on Sundays.

Friar Fever - January 10, 2012
that’s practically all of the food groups.
Axion - January 10, 2012
It really only leaves beer.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
Which...I don't drink either
How I’m still alive without the food groups, it’s a mystery
Friar Fever - January 10, 2012

but actually im in the not liking avacado or guac group too.
Nater Tater - January 10, 2012
I'm pretty sure in Fallbrook all you heathens would be sentenced to death by public stoning.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
stoned by hard as stone avocados?
so when it was done the citizens could have guac for their post-stoning party?
Nater Tater - January 10, 2012
No they don't give up the good ones
They stone people with the soft mushy ones. It is not as painful, but it has a higher ick factor.

avocado guilty

This
As long as they have a side of white sauce.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
Unanimous
Axion - January 10, 2012
Okay, thinking realistically here…
Given the facilities and necessary turnaround time at the park, the options are limited. Burgers would have to be the thin griddled style, which really only leaves Hodad’s. I think NY style pizza isn’t going to work well either, and deep dish isn’t really ballpark food, so I’d stick with Filippi’s. Bring Rubios back for fish tacos (though now that they’re back to hand battering the fish, I don’t know if that works). They’re doing well with beer, but they need to spread it throughout the park, and include some more local breweries.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
I'm thinking you'd serve the stuff up at like Western Metal
or at one of the restaurant style places. Also, nobody’s ever seemed to care about turnaround time before. I see those hot dogs boiling on the rollers. Can’t tell me it takes 2 innings to serve me up one of those.
Dex - January 10, 2012
Western Metal doesn't even have a kitchen, does it?
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
I dunno...
All the food I see get served up there looks like it comes out of warmers, so probably not.
Dex - January 10, 2012
I think they truck stuff up there in the big carts.
Axion - January 10, 2012
Rubios does need to come back
The stuff they had last year wasn’t that good. I need me a fish taco with a side shrimp burrito… in fact I know what I’m getting for lunch now.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
Hamburgers don't work
If you don’t make them to order, they suck. If you do it takes too long. I say forget the hamburgers and go with Phil’s barbecue.
field39 - January 10, 2012
Takes too long???
The lines are already 2 1/2 innings long!
theodore donald kerabatsos - January 10, 2012
Thin patties like Hodad's cook fast enough.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
Smash Burger
mbcarval - January 10, 2012
Gulden's Mustard for hotdogs
I went to see a Diamondbacks game at the BOB in 2000 and I had the option of putting some spicy mustard on the ol’ hotdog. This choice made me happy.
AIChief - January 10, 2012
When given the choice between yellow mustard and spicy mustard
everyone chooses spicy mustard
jbox - January 10, 2012
Exactly. Why doesn't the "Power" see this?
AIChief - January 10, 2012
Because yellow mustard isn't real mustard.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
I thought it was only used in Spin Art.
Axion - January 10, 2012
I <3 yellow mustard
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
I like both.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012

jbox - January 10, 2012
Clorox's ranch dressing still freaks me out

Bush and cond . . . Oh, almost misread that.
AIChief - January 10, 2012
Hahahaha
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
Dodger Stadium has a good spicy mustard option as well
matthewverygood - January 10, 2012
Why not have all 3
Dijon, Guldens, and the yellow crap. Because nothing beats Dijon.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
And can we get the legit kettle corn back?
It seems as if they just take the small broken pieces of regular popcorn, spray it with corn starch and call it good.
Jsn L - January 10, 2012
+1
Ron Mexico - January 10, 2012
How much of a “no” is In-n-Out at the ballpark?
Like what if we sign In-n-Out as our power hitter? $10m/yr. C’mon guys.
Axion - January 10, 2012
What if they just drive in the In-N-Out truck?
That would work right?
jbox - January 10, 2012
K Street
It could still function as a street.
Axion - January 10, 2012
Don't they only use the truck at fundraisers/church events?
matthewverygood - January 10, 2012
THE FRIARS ARE PLAYING A BASEBALL GAME!!! COUNT IT!
Axion - January 10, 2012
and need donations to sign Maybin
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Nope. We had the truck at my freshman orientation in college.
Seeing all the out of state kids have their first In-N-Out is something special.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
Did you pay cash to them or did you just give them a raffle ticket thing?
matthewverygood - January 10, 2012
I don't remember. It was like 9 years ago. OH GOD I'M OLD.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
I'm just as old
but my point is that the trucks are limited. They don’t do fries and I don’t think they’re set up for individual transactions
matthewverygood - January 10, 2012
I love In-n-Out, but should we be so desperate for an LA chain in our park?
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
Oh, who am I kidding, of course we should.
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
I want Chili Verde Nachos
field39 - January 10, 2012
Speaking of nachos
Serious real life carne asada nachos and fries.
None of that current super nacho nonsense.
Axion - January 10, 2012
Also, I was pretty happy with the craft beer selection last year...
but there needs to be more places in the park to get them. If it’s $8 for coors/bud light/urine and $9 for a craft beer, I’m getting the craft every time, but I don’t like having to walk halfway around the park to find it.
theodore donald kerabatsos - January 10, 2012
This.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
I'm located conveniently adjacent to where it was
and I’ve usually got an open lap.
Axion - January 10, 2012
Bingo
They should just do away with Bud and Coors. No one but the visiting fans we hate buy it anyway.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
especially Coors.
Axion - January 10, 2012
Rocky Mountain water my ass
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
Stone comes from Escondido water. They could probably make it from TJ River water and it would still be awesome and better than Coors.
Axion - January 10, 2012
I had a feeling Coors came from your ass.
MrDanielX - January 10, 2012
Nah it comes from the other side
It’s usually brewed over the course of about an hour from other superior beers and then bottled fresh from the source. I believe the current source is Tim Tebow.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
I disagree...
I want idiot fans, of other teams, spending their money, in our park, on crap we don’t want.
Jsn L - January 10, 2012
True
If we let them drink the good beer we might run out.
athletics68 - January 10, 2012
I can't lie.
I’m guilty if having bought Bud AND Coors on multiple occasions at the ballpark for the sake of convenience.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012
I AM DISAPPOINT
Darklighter - January 10, 2012
I've done this
usually after TEQUILA
John Gennaro - January 10, 2012
Oh god, I'm guilty of that too.
I’ll be sitting lazily in my seat somewhere in the deepest part of the park wanting a beer but not wanting to have to hire a sherpa to get there. Then there’s always the process of trying to convince myself ahead of time that [insert whatever piss beer here] isn’t that bad. So, I buy a piss beer and that first sip is filled with INSTANT REGRET.
theodore donald kerabatsos - January 10, 2012
I think I drank 3 last season.
One was honestly just because I was thirsty and needed some water.
Axion - January 10, 2012
This.
If better beer was conveniently available throughout the ballpark, I’d only drink that. But it’s not (yet).
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012

athletics68 - January 10, 2012
Wait...you didn't like that?
Time to re-examine my life…
Friar Fever - January 10, 2012
Not that I didn't like it.
Just saying we (mostly you) deserve to have more company.
jodes0405 - January 10, 2012

$2 street tacos?
Mad_Villain - January 10, 2012 via Android app
Green Flash
We need to add Green Flash’s Hop Head Red to the beer selection at PETCO.

My Food List
Street Tacos – TJ style cart, fresh tortillas and simple toppings
Corndogs – Good ones! Not Foster Farms. Ever had the ones at Disneyland? They are a meal in itself.
Dairy Queen – I would love a Blizzard on a hot day game, or really any game.
Carne Asada Fries.
Kabobs – Meat, Onion, Meat, Pepper, Meat etc
Satay Cart – Skewers of meat for when you need to Lo-Carb it.
I know all of you love Rocky’s but two doors down is a place called Big Kahuna’s that makes a great hamburger and the BEST chicken teryiaki. That place is awesome.

Growing up in PL I have to go with Hodads for a burger
For Mexican, got to go to Hodad’s neighboor, Nicos. Best breakfast burritos and best carnitas. I swear I could eat carnitas from Nicos everyday.
As for beer, they should have plain old Budweiser at more stands. I remember one game I had to search high and low for a regular Budweiser, I was sitting out in left field.

BBQ = Still haven’t had good BBQ in San Diego……..and it’s definitely NOT Kansas City BBQ down by Seaport Village.

Johnny B's in La Mesa

AIChief - January 10, 2012
Indeed, Avacado hasn't been treated properly...
It needs to be dumped on the “Avacado Highway” to be run over by rush hour traffic.

Ballpark Food Idea
Grunion Run Dogs. Recreate the SoCal grunion run tradition. Charge people to put on blindfolds and chase hot dogs through the sand in the beacher seats. Like put the hot dogs on little strings that the kids pull and you can eat whatever you can catch in a 30 second window.
Dex - January 10, 2012
Yes, blindfold people and make them feel for hot dogs. We will all make new friends.

It's hard to get excited about adding food to Petco based on local favorites
When whatever they put in is just going to be a marked up version of that food. Just feels like getting ripped off. I like it when I go to other parks and get local stuff since I may not have time to make it out to wherever those local spots are. Convenience cost. So should I think of this like I’m a San Diego tourist?
Then again, it’s probably worth noting that I rarely feel the need to buy food at the ballpark.

Turkey Leg
anybody use to get those at the Q? I was always down for 1 a year. Every year I would think about how good it would be to walk around eating a giant smoked turkey leg. Then I would get one, take 4 bites, realize it was not as great as I thought, and spend the 4-8th inning trying to get the cardboard like turkey meat out between my teeth.
Ron Mexico - January 10, 2012
Was it a batter dipped deep fried turkey leg smothered with guacamole and drizzled with syrup served with a fried snickers chaser?
Jsn L - January 10, 2012

Ron Mexico - January 10, 2012
As far as Hot Dogs go
My biggest complaint about them, is that the variety of hot dogs is not consistent in the park. You have your cheap ones, then you have the Friar Dog, and then you have the speciality dogs, plus the different sausages.
But I always forget what dogs I can get where, and some dogs I have to half way around the stadium to get. Which sucks since it takes forever to get to my seats from the plaza level.
Ron Mexico - January 10, 2012

3. Burger Lounge
4. In N Out
5. Rockys
TheAxManCometh - January 10, 2012

Hear me out on this...I always thought it would be cool if Costco got the concessions at Petco.
They could charge like $8 for a hot dog, slice of pizza or chicken bake thing and $5 for a soda or a softserve with fruit – but if you had a Costco card you could get the Costco price and have a hot dog and soda for $1.50 and add a Churro for another $1. Put a membership booth next to the concession stand and just use it as a way to sell Costco memberships.
SeeAnFrockOh - January 11, 2012

Best burger
My favorite burger is the county is Nessy Burger, the small stand next to the 15 on the 76. But like all good burgers they’re fresh and made to order which will never work at the ball park.
SwastedDotCom - January 11, 2012
At baseball games in Japan...
you can bring your own beer into the game. If you run out of beer or didn’t bring yours, there are young ladies walking around with keg’s strapped to their backs. What they need at PetCo is a dude rolling around with a hibatchi grilling up burgers to order…he’d need a vegi and condiment buddy too.

Pizza—Woodstock in PB and in SDSU area. Also, there’s a hip place somewhere in North Park that throws an egg on their pizza
Craft Beer—I love me some Woody
Guacamole—Haven’t been to a guacamole store lately
Tacos—I’m gonna say burritos here and argue for Ortiz’s in OB
BBQ—Phil’s Phil’s Phil’s

Issues
Margarita = Old Town Mexican Cafe/El Agave
Pizza = Bronx Pizza, don’t even go there
Tacos = El Indio – I like the pureness
BBQ = 1) Famous Daves, 2) Phils, 3) Bubbas
TheAxManCometh - January 11, 2012
Luigi's > Bronx
Darklighter - January 11, 2012
I heard El Indio uses velveeta.
MrDanielX - January 11, 2012
A lot of the Mexican places don't use authentic cheese.
Hell, El Ranchito puts American on their quesadillas… pretty sure El Indio isn’t legit either.
StrangeBroP25 - January 11, 2012
The El Indio next to Shakespeare? If that's the one, then yes that place sucks. All of their food tasted like it came from a can.
The trash can.
sdchicken - January 11, 2012
El Indio sucks
Nicos in OB is my favorite.
mrbarneydangles - January 11, 2012
Lucha Libre 2 years ago was a damn good place for tacos
It’s still good now, but in a diminished capacity.
sdchicken - January 12, 2012
Where's Lucha Libre?
I’ve never heard of it.
mrbarneydangles - January 12, 2012
Washington & San Diego I think
It’s right off of the 5 & Washington.
I guess my problem is that I’ve never liked tacos, I’m a burrito guy through and through. Lucha has some just ridiculous burritos but its’ not my favorite. That honor goes to El Cotixan’s fajita burrito
TheAxManCometh - January 12, 2012
Washington and India technically
right across the intersection from Gelato Vero.
I like the food at Lucha Libre although I can’t get their signature items (vegetarian) but the real draw is the general style of the place and calling in to reserve the Champions Table. It’s the perfect f-u to everyone waiting in line.
abara - January 12, 2012
I like Nicos
I used to work right by the one in Sorrento Valley.
jbox - January 12, 2012
Tons of legit places use velveeta
The best cheese steaks use cheese from a can. What kind of cheese do you want them to use?
Dex - January 12, 2012
Oaxaca cheese
If you’ve never had queso oaxaca, then you haven’t lived life. It takes the best qualities of cheese and butter and puts them in one amazing package.
Whenever I’d make street tacos for friends, I’d use queso oaxaca.

Seven trades this offseason, some of them massive
and the thread about food is bigger than all the trade discussions put together
abara - January 11, 2012
It's because we're a bunch of fatties.
Darklighter - January 11, 2012
And nothing better to do than debate the intricacies of the meat patty and what it shares a bun with
Friar Fever - January 11, 2012
Hey
I’ve eaten food almost every day of my life. I’m qualified, okay?
Axion - January 11, 2012
What if I've never missed a day of food?
Am I more qualified than you? Please say yes. There’s gotta be one thing I’m better at than you.
Friar Fever - January 11, 2012
hmmm
Well does one of you get out to more places and eat a wider variety of foods? Does one of you specialize in a certain type of food? I mean food is such a broad topic that each of you could be more qualified depending on the scope of the study. If its avocado’s or alcohol, sadly FF, It would make you less qualified.
Nater Tater - January 11, 2012
Qualifications are: 1-Do you like food? 2-Are you a fatass?
If the answers to the above are both yes, then you are clear to proceed.
sdchicken - January 12, 2012
can number 2 really happen without number 1?
i mean im sure there might be that rare exception or maybe you became such a fatass that food now repulses you….anyways..I am clear to proceed!
