Gaslamp Ball

Open Thread: What is the best hamburger in San Diego?

Mentor is in the process of re-evaluating the food options at Petco Park. If you've ever eaten at Petco Park, you know that they have food, but I would defy you to say that they have any "signature" items. He's asked Gaslamp Ball to help figure out what brands he should be going after and what he should be emulating.

First on our culinary tour is the hamburger.

If you know Padres history, you know that Ray Kroc loathed hot dogs. Little sausages shaped things packed full of who knows what. Owning the Padres must have been a constant source of nausea for the former owner, having to see thousands (or hundreds as it were) of fans shoving hot dogs into their mouths one or two at a time.

If there was one thing he loved, it was burgers. And as it so happens, it's the first thing that Mentor asked about.

If you could see one San Diego food brand offered at Petco Park which would it be? Example- #rockysburger?
Jan 06 via Twitter for iPhoneFavoriteRetweetReply

Personally, I've never been to Rocky's but Mentor tweeted a Hodad's photo shortly thereafter. I love me some Hodad's. So have at it. What's the best burger in San Diego?

Other things that Mentor's curious about that we can discuss now or later:

  • Margarita
  • Pizza
  • Craft Beer
  • Guacamole
  • Tacos
  • BBQ

Notably absent from the list... Anything having to do with breakfast. HMMMMMMMMMM...

I'll get it started

Jumbo Jack. Beef & Bun. O’Brothers (depending on the chef). Any variation of Tijuana deli style hamburgers served at Mexican restaurants (or the really nice one at El Take It Easy).

I personally don’t like Hodad’s. I know, I’m crazy. Their burgers are so thin! If I wanted 8 pounds of toppings, I’d go wild at Fuddrucker’s.

I think Hodad's is overated

I love Liar’s club when they were in Mission Beach.

Rocky's of course
amen

Rocky’s is a life altering experience

I am a horrible person who lived on the opposite corner from Rocky's for two years and never went.

I really should fix that.

Not the best burger in town, but I’d support an In n Out inside of Petco.

That'll never happen

And Tom even said he’s asked them

https://twitter.com/#!/TomGarfinkel/status/155458942414229505

Some more venues

Tioli’s, Station, Johnny B’s

Rockys

also, Crazee Burger is legit.

Crazee Burger is pretty damn good
I love Hodad's, but there's already one downtown.

Also, any burger with a fried egg on top. And bacon. Because it’s Breakfasttown.

I was thinking they should just do a breakfast place

Breakfast for dinner is in these days anyway. I’d eat some french toast at a game.

Hodads

Is the best burger I have ever had, and its a the perfect comfort food. I don’t expect a lot of comfort will be needed as I expect a 162-0 season. That said, should the unthinkable happen and we lose a game at home. I don’t want to have to walk all the way to 10th and Broadway to get me a little piece of meaty, cheesey, ketchup & Mustardy, Pickley heaven.

What about the Rory Burger at Corvette

Peanut Butter for extra protein.

Did you go to Rory's?

It was a burger place in Mission Valley I think and their claim to fame was that PB burger

are you talking about the roller skating place?

I knew a girl worked there.

I think so. I have vague memories of it.
Also, this made me laugh a lot for some reason:
If you’ve ever eaten at Petco Park, you know that they have food
Five Guys...

I got hooked on this crack when I lived in Virginia. And the cajun fries? Awwwww snap!!

That's not a local place

Also, In N Out is better.

It is local...

there is one at Liberty Station…and also, In & Out sux…move along, nothing to see here.

But there is also a 5 Guys

In DC… not a San Diego specialty.

It started in Virginia near DC
I think he means originating locally
I stand corrected...

my apologies to Gaslamp Baseball. :(

BANNED
Ban Revoked!

Too lazy to go in and perform the ban.

Woohooo!!!
BAN HIM FOR CELEBRATING

I’m watching you…

Please join Bolts from the Blue so that I can ban you. Thank you.
I'm still waiting.
I'll play your little game Trebek...

And you're banned. Thank you.

RIP Jsn L STUNG BY WASPS

But...but...

how will I part nuggets of wisdom on the Charger’s fandom?!?!?!

BAN HIM FOR THINKING IN-N-OUT SUCKS
Inspect the member!
This is like an open thread right now
What John Said.
5 Guys >>>>>>In N out

and I love In N out

You must love peanuts
I do. I love salty nuts in my mouth

and my fries cooked in peanut oil.

In-n-Out is really good, but 5 guys has juicy burgers, better buns, and WAAAY better fries.

I HATE IN-N-OUT FRIES!
The fries are much better if you order them well done.

But that’s beside the point. The burgers are better at In-n-Out, and that’s what matters.

They do smell like body odor
this is my only complaint of IN-NOut

for a fast food burger shop. Good+ Burgers, good shakes, horrible fries.

Five Guys is good, but In N Out is better.

And Five Guys is more of an East Coast thing, even though it seems like there’s a new one popping up in San Diego county all the time.

Five Guys was the most disappointing foodstuff I've ever crammed in my blasphemy hole.

Everybody is all firmed up about it and I finally went there about five years ago…
I just don’t see what the big deal is. I guess I’m spoiled by my own burgers. I rule.

I know this feel.
Meat Donuts!
Oh yeah!

I wonder if I could develop a mobile fry station, too.

Cajun fries sound pretty damn good...
Get the eff out of here...

Five Guys PALES in comparison to In N Out. It’s like a greasy, lazy alternative.

Burger Lounge
Good call

I’ve only had their shake, but hear the burgers are good

Overpriced, undergood.
Other curiousities

Margarita- I don’t like much, but I hear that Freds in Old Town has good ones.

Pizza- Tie between Bronx Pizza and Luigi’s IMHO

Craft Beer- Anything from Ballast Point or Stone… I hear Pizza Port is good, never had.

Guacamole- I hate guac, which earns me shun face from my San Diego friends.

Tacos- Mama Testa’s by far. Their fish tacos are wildly expensive and worth every penny.

BBQ- Phils is good. So good I never try anything else.

Luigi’s. YES.

They already have Stone on tap at Petco Park. Ballast Point on tap would be AMAZING.

Odd story that someone told me that might be true

Luigi was one of the original owners of Bronx and left (taking the recipe, essentially) to start his own place. This is why the pizza is equally as good as Bronx’s.

I've actually never had Bronx Pizza. PLEASE NOBODY HIT ME.
I'll take you some time

I think it’s a little better than Luigi’s, but it’s pretty close.

Agreed, I like it a little better than Luigis

But they don’t serve beer. ;-(

Yeah

There’s good reason for that.

For one, they obviously don’t want to pay for the liquor license because they’re run as cheaply as possible (making them a perfect match for the Padres!). This is why they’re cash-only and have a shady accountant.

For two, they try and get as many people in as possible. This means getting as many people out as quickly as possible. They don’t like when you hang around for a while.

Bronx is very ok to me...

I think I prefer deep dish style, but my favorite for that in town is Lefty’s which is a Cubs place and we can’t have that in the ballpark.

I prefer deep dish too,

but yeah, what you said.

Deep dish?

What is wrong with you people?

This isn't my quote, so don't kill the messenger

“But if deep dish is your favorite pizza, then you don’t like pizza.”

Rec'd!

Deep dish is nothing but bread with some pizza toppings put on it. If you can’t fold it, it’s not true pizza.

It's like a bowl of pizzaish toppings.
It's a bready lasagna
YOU'RE A BREADY LASAGNA.
YOU'RE A BOWL OF PIZZAISH TOPPINGS.
Deep dish is my favorite pizza and I like pizza

BOOM.

Sicilian Place has good deep dish...

I think their NY style falls short of Luigis and Bronx.

I think you mean Sicilian Thing
I've only been once, and I thought Luigi's was better. And they deliver!
You're forgiven

They are cash only which in this day and age can be a hassle. But man are they good.

It was on tap last year

in that craft beer section

Well shit.

Where was I?

Never, ever at the spot
I was there a few times.
Well it was around the corner from the the spot

They also had Karl Strauss, I believe. There were multiple varieties from Ballast Point. Calico, for sure. I think either Big Eye, Black Marlin or both. They’ve had the Pale Ale (formerly known as Yellow Tail) at the bar area in the Mercado since before that, I believe. Don’t think I ever saw Sculpin or Wahoo.

Wahoo was there, and Big Eye and either Calico or Scuplin, forget which.

I had Calico at Petco multiple times

So it was definitely there.

I've had Calico, Wahoo and Pale Ale there
Why not make their own beer?

I told Neil the Beerman that Padres should make their own brew. PETCO Porter.

The Rockies do this
Yes!

I say get Mission to do it, what with the proximity to the park and all.

I feel Corey Brock needs to get behind this
Just as long as he doesn't tweet about it often

Some people have very high standards when it comes to their Twitter feed.

All of these things

Although this place has amazing BBQ, is dog-friendly (which seems up the PETCO alley) and has an awesome patio with a giant screen for sports-watching.

I feel like Randy Jones is all the BBQ Petco Park needs. But that's just me.
This is why I think Phil's (or any other place) will never get in
I wish it was a little more legit

It doesn’t seem like pulled pork should be as expensive as it is.

Two birds with one stone...

Can’t go wrong with some Pizza Port pizza and beer. Ballast Point would be awesome as well. They should do something in the center field park area to incorporate all the local beer.

I feel like

You couldn’t replicate Pizza Port pizza with the cooking equipment you have at the park since I imagine all pizza gets cooked on location at Petco.

I think you could

Actually Pizza Port would be the reasonable alternative to do both pizza and beer.

This thread is making me soooo damn hungry.
It's making me hungry too. FOR BASEBALL. And also burgers.
I have a horrible conference call in 10 minutes or I would be...

Trying to score some breakfast.

I think we can all agree

Getting some legitimate tacos/burritos/nachos in the stadium should be a higher priority than the burgers.

Put some Lolita’s IN the ballpark. Finding fish tacos is way harder at PETCO than it should be.

I dunno what happened to Rubio's

But they should bring Rubio’s back and only allow fish tacos. Forget the other options. Rubio’s fish tacos and that’s it.

Did they replace Rubio's with those kinda generic Mexican food places?

Or were those always there and I just never noticed them before?

I think they did

Those places suck and there’s not enough of them.

Rubios definitely needs to come back. They're not the best, but they're iconic.
Street tacos as an option would be nice too...
This and Dex's

Rubio’s Taco Shop. Fish or street tacos. Maybe margaritas.

Legit margaritas...

not the shiznit they serve now.

Rubios seems so... mediocre.

Its fine afterwork on Tuesday… but I think we can do better for tacos.

Mama Testa is expensive… wouldn’t even have to raise prices for the park.

If we want something cheaper… anything than ends with -bertos.

A 'Bertos on every corner!
This is a requirement.

Either before or after every game I go to, I always try to hit up Lolita’s. Mmmmmmm

Too bad Lolita's isn't always open when games are over.

At least three times last season I tried to go there after a game and the kitchen was already closed.

Valentine's is pretty much on par and similar cost

You ever make that the second option? (between 8th and 9th on Market)

I like the laughter that the idea of "Breakfast Town" creates...

(and a couple mentions were made above)
But it would be cool if they just opened a restaurant called Breakfasttown. We could enjoy scrambled eggs drowning in Tapatio sauce. And then laugh that Breakfasttown has been made official.

I support this idea wholeheartedly.

And we should get Mentor to sell GLB shirts there.

OMG If I could score one of their "Breakfast at the Park"

Hash/Scrabbles they have DURING a game. I would be in heaven.

I miss the breakfast bowls with buttermilk biscuit croutons. I could eat those for every meal.

that's like a failure pile in a sadness bowl
P.S. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's never been to Rocky's.
I don't even know what Rocky's is
Seconded

Where is one?

Thirded

How have I never heard of it before?

WHAT THE HOLY F_CK
I have not either.
Rockys is very good...

but I don’t understand why so many Diegans seem to think it’s the best. There are better burgers in town.

this is not an accurate statement
Hey, I'm not saying they're bad. They're great burgers.

It’s just that if I had to choose one burger, it wouldn’t be Rockys.

this is how a rocky's burger makes me feel

+1 for the Neverending Story reference.
Another idea

Food trucks.

I don’t know how to pull it off, but SD loves food trucks.

It would be sweet if they could put food trucks on the blocked streets.

Nationals Park has a huge ass lot they let vendors like than camp out in… its like a fun fair of food… an FFF if you will.

Fenway does something similar
They did it for opening day last year

It was splendid

How about a food cart...

serving french fries with curry gravy?

Didn't they have food trucks a couple times last season before games?
There is a food truck

that parks outside of Blind Lady Ale House and they have awesome burgers. Forgot the name, but grilled peach on the burger.

Also, Slow Cal BBQ has chronic nachos that awesome.

Or maybe just steal some food truck inspired stuff

Like sweet potato tater tots.

I have a conference call in 4 minutes.

I would rather be OT’ing food. DAMMIT WORK!

This thread is not helping in my quest to be beach ready by the time I get to San Diego

You’re making me hungry!
But I’m taking notes for when I get down there. It looks like 90% of my time will be spent eating and drinking!

"Beach ready"

is a lie.

The problem with some of these hamburger choices

is that they are already like 8-10 bucks at their location. You bring them into the ballpark and you’ve got easily 12-15 bucks. I want an affordable burger that’s why I think I’d like just a jumbo jack or something.

I actually think a JITB in the ballpark would be pretty awesome

But nobody would go anywhere else. And they’d run out of tacos every game.

I wouldn't want them to serve their tacos.

A. We already get free taco coupons.
B. They’d probably have to mark up the price for them, and I wouldn’t pay more than what they already cost for those.
C. I’d rather have tacos from somewhere else.

I wish they'd do giveaways other than the tacos

I had so many free taco coupons that I never got around to using. How about a free Jumbo Jack or Breakfast Jack instead?

The only affordable burgers I eat at the park are the ones I bring from home.
Rally's is actually good for the BP

the problem is that the can’t get the burgers out fast enough.

God, I used to love getting Rally's at the Murph. They're still around?
I think there's one in Esco.

Unless I’m thinking of something else. Idk.

There is one somewhere north of here.

in that pre-LA area.

There's one in Culver City near my apartment
One in El Cajon. One in Spring Valley

Just had lunch there a couple weeks ago.

There's one in Imperial Beach too
So they're all out in the boonies?
I think they prefer cheap leases.

In fact, they probably prefer everything cheap.

The one in Spring Valley is right down the street from the Swap Meet

Cheap is how we live.

there is one in esco
I know there were there at least a few season ago

right behind section 103 I believe, but not sure if it is still there.

Honestly I bring my own food to the games. Family of 4, food adds up.

Heck I brought in a whole bronx pizza before, box and everything and no one said a word.

I've done the pizza thing before too.

They’re very good about letting you bring food into the ballpark.

Probably the best thing about the Padres

is that you can bring in almost anything.

I should just buy some Carne, bring in a little hibachi grill and just make tacos for everyone.

Please do!
We clearly need a GLB tailgate party.
Better yet

Let’s wait until Friarhood plans and organizes one and then we’ll crash it.

we should get banners and take pictures next to their banners

bannerbombs

Jonny Dub will be waiting...

and waiting.

A George Foreman would work too.
Man I miss Rally's

SO good.We used to have one in PL way back in the day. It was right on the way to the 8E so me and my old man would grab a Rally’s on the way to the Padres games.

Thats a tasty burger

Oh man, I do love me some burgers. Depends on what type of burger you want though:

-Nicky Rotten’s. My personal favorite. Since this is breakfast town, their breakfast burger is life changing. Its a bit big and you feel like you have a brick in your stomach though.

-Hodads-Great crunchy, tasty burger. A really good option since they have opened a 2nd location and you dont have to wait 1 hour in line at the OB one.

-Crazy Burger. Tons of options; and always solid. I’ve had a gator burger and boar burger there. Who’s feeling frisky?

-Five Guys/In-and-Out: Both are really good but Five Guys really likes to let everyone know that they are good. Did you know they have been in magazines? I get it.

Of course there is Rocky’s, Canadian Steak Burger (dont sleep!), and even Waterfront and the Bareback Grill have good options.

Canada Steak Burger would attract homeless into the stadium
Nicky Rotten's

very good, very different

They really need Oscar's breadsticks

even if they charged double I’d still buy it. Half a dozen breadsticks for 6 bucks? OK!

Also, I love the clam chowder in the sourdough bowl. They could start selling it at more than Anthony’s in the mercado and turn it into a signature item. It’s like $7 and it fills me up (I’m a morbidly obese ogre).

Excellent idea

Have a rec

Has Oscar's gone out of business yet?
The corporate owned ones are still in business but not the franchise owned

or maybe I have that backwards. But there are still quite a few open still.

unnecessary extra use of the word still

I wish we could edit posts

Don't worry...

I’m from the Department of Redundancy Department.

It's cause it's all bread

Pure starch and carbohydrates.

Hodad's for beef

Crazee Burger for everything else…

Burgers

I don’t want an in n out there anymore bc I wouldn’t want to pay an outrageous price for it. And Its not exactly local but SmashBurger would be amazing! Even though there’s one a couple blocks from the ballpark.

Smashburger is great for a chain, way better than overrated In-N-Out
BANNED
Actually Ban revoked

You not being at In-n-Out means less lines for me.

More power to you

Enjoy the little burger with bible verse. I’m going to get a real burger.

There needs to be a anti-rec button.

I’m down with smashburger even though it’s not local. I feel like “ballpark version of smashburger” would be a sad thing, though.

All for Smashburger

Still go there all the time in Clifton

I like Smashburger

One of my new favorites IF I can’t make it to In n Out.

BUMMER that they get In n Out at the ballpark – there is really nothing more So Cal than that. All my east cast friends make a point of visiting one when they get out here for the first time. Friends from Wisconsin just went & raved.

Now I am curious about this Rocky’s place…and..well..I’ve gotta admit never been to Hodad’s yet either!

Just change the cups for the margaritas.

I feel bad for the people making them and carrying them around and I shouldn’t be the one feeling bad, they should.

You’re not going to settle on one craft beer here. Instead we should push out the crappy national brands, especially Coors. That’s a division rival.

True...

plus they seem like margarita shooters instead of straight up margaritas.

I'd love it if they just had a big grill out at the Park

They you want a dog or a burger they cook it for you right there. Instead of the fried or boiled dogs.

Oh god... so much this.

Baseball and hot dogs go together like… baseball and hot dogs. Yet, the dogs at the park are so shitty. Why is it impossible to find a nice plump, juicy, grilled dog at the ballpark?

Ray Kroc's legacy
I have to agree

A nice grilled dog or sausage would be money.

mmm

I’m just imagining the smell of an actual grill with hot dogs or burgers cooking in a game

Small Bar's Baja Burger gives me a PFOB

It’s got jalapenos, avacado, little tortilla strips, some kind of tomatillo sauce, and pepperjack cheese. And they grind the meat in house which makes a HUGE difference.

Quality Social makes damn good burgers too.

Small Bar/Hamilton's make great burgers. But they're not suited to ballpark kitchens.
I've had a great one at Neighborhood

and The Corner is also great.

Just make bar kitchens everywhere! PROBLEM SOLVED!

The Corner's is very good

Hamilton’s burgers and grill-cheese blow my mind fairly consistently, but there’s no chance it’d work at Petco.

Solution: Get the Pad Squad to run in orders from Neighborhood. God, I haven't been to Neighborhood in months...
Jalapeno Mac & Cheese seems like it could work at Petco
True.

It’s good but I think I could make it better.

Open a stand at Petco Park.
I THINK WE FOUND OUR ANSWER
i make it pretty well
am I the only one

that thinks about Jalapeno handshakes whenever Jalapenos are mentioned?

They need Corn Dogs at the Park too

That seems like the perfect baseball food.

OR those sausage and pancake corndog-type deals.

BREAKFASTTOWN

I was gonna mention those earlier
Ohter curiousities

Margarita – meh they’re all margarita mix and tequilla. Where ever is serving them today is the best.
Pizza – Thin is Bronx, thicker go Oggis.
Craft Beer – Green Flash (specifically Hop Head Red which is just perfection)
Guacamole – Avocado is disgusting, stick to salsa.
Tacos – I’m partial to Rubios Fish Tacos since they brought back the Alaskan fish.
BBQ – Phils… period.

They did Oggi's before.
Avocado is disgusting!?!?! ... BANNED!!!!
Seriously, what's with people not liking avocado/quacamole?

It feels like sacrilege.

I love guac

but I don’t like avocados. Too slimey.

See, I'm the other way around.

Well, I don’t dislike ’amole; I just prefer ’cados solo.

People outside California and the SW aren't huge fans of it
Hard to find ripe ones elsewhere

It was a problem when I lived on the east coast.

Yep.

I like trader joes guacamole though. not too bad

Took me several years of living here to learn to like it.

No one in the northeast even knows what an avocado tastes like.

Lived in California 28 of 30 years

And I’ve still never learned to love them. It must be genetic, I was born in Virginia from a family entirely consisting of New Englanders. Just not wired to love that green thing and anything that comes from it.

But in the burritos and like rolled tacos and stuff

Don’t you specifically have to ask them to remove the guacamole?

I do

It’s a pain in the ass. More than once I’ve forgotten to and then nearly gagged on guac.

Sacreligious Californian

Lived 30/30 years here and I do not like avocados. My mom is the same way and she’s lived here longer!

Wasn't born in California

I don’t have the Avocado gene.

Do you eat carne asada burritos?

What do you put in there? Or like street tacos?

I do

I just put a really spicy salsa there instead.

I don't like avocado

For burritos I go California. Steak, fries and cheese. Maybe leave in the pico de gallo if I’m feeling frisky.

IT'S BUTTER THAT GROWS ON TREES.
Never been a big butter fan either

It’s congealed fat. I’ll take margarine thanks.

GO BACK TO COMMUNIST RUSSIA
You have a time machine?
omg

man… this explains a lot to me. You’re not wired like a human.

I bet he hates flowers and cheese and Eddie Murphy's early stand-up
It's like the sound of a baby crying brings him pleasure
Depends on why they're crying
You're trying hard to get banned
You'd ban Mr. Burns?
You know what's better than either

Bacon grease. If you’re going to put fat on stuff, put the best. Eggs over easy cooked in bacon grease should be a staple of Breakfast in the Park on Sundays.

This...

my mom used to fry up potatoes with bacon grease

I miss lard.
Mmmmmmm...

Vitamin L

Yep, that's how my mom does it.

She used to know a guy who would have bacon every morning, then cook his eggs in the grease and then toast his bread in the remaining grease. That’s a little gross. but I get the egg thing

That's how breakfast is supposed to be cooked! This is ancient knowledge!
I believe that's the "Fry Up" breakfast that I've been eating at Proper fairly regularly
They need to bring this to Breakfast at the Park

Enough with scrambled eggs.

Just go to Proper
Touche

Damn it when does the season start again?

"Know" in the biblical sense of the word?
Bahahaha

oh god gross why would you put that image in my head?

Wow...

that changes the whole context of the post. Well play sir…well played.

I'm a little upset TTG's comment isn't green.
I feel like we're the same person

Internet high five

If I don't like avocado or In N Out, does that mean I'm double banned?

that’s practically all of the food groups.

It really only leaves beer.
Which...I don't drink either

How I’m still alive without the food groups, it’s a mystery

are you a real person?

but actually im in the not liking avacado or guac group too.

I'm pretty sure in Fallbrook all you heathens would be sentenced to death by public stoning.
stoned by hard as stone avocados?

so when it was done the citizens could have guac for their post-stoning party?

No they don't give up the good ones

They stone people with the soft mushy ones. It is not as painful, but it has a higher ick factor.

us avocado haters

would be welcoming death as the “icky” avocados keep smashing and staying on us.

Only an avocado hater would write something as avocado ignorant as this!
avocado guilty

of being avocado ignorant. Death by Avocado it is.

I like avacados.

Hate Guc.

Is this because you drink real alcohol instead?
Don't drink that either
eyesight is overrated
yeah all thats left is the bacon group

and the cereal group

Wouldn't they cancel each other out?
El Vitral is making some high end ones these days.
Taquitos from El Indio

They were invented in San Diego.

Love this idea

Their quesadillas are top-notch as well.

This

As long as they have a side of white sauce.

Okay, thinking realistically here…

Given the facilities and necessary turnaround time at the park, the options are limited. Burgers would have to be the thin griddled style, which really only leaves Hodad’s. I think NY style pizza isn’t going to work well either, and deep dish isn’t really ballpark food, so I’d stick with Filippi’s. Bring Rubios back for fish tacos (though now that they’re back to hand battering the fish, I don’t know if that works). They’re doing well with beer, but they need to spread it throughout the park, and include some more local breweries.

I'm thinking you'd serve the stuff up at like Western Metal

or at one of the restaurant style places. Also, nobody’s ever seemed to care about turnaround time before. I see those hot dogs boiling on the rollers. Can’t tell me it takes 2 innings to serve me up one of those.

Western Metal doesn't even have a kitchen, does it?
I dunno...

All the food I see get served up there looks like it comes out of warmers, so probably not.

I think they truck stuff up there in the big carts.
Rubios does need to come back

The stuff they had last year wasn’t that good. I need me a fish taco with a side shrimp burrito… in fact I know what I’m getting for lunch now.

Hamburgers don't work

If you don’t make them to order, they suck. If you do it takes too long. I say forget the hamburgers and go with Phil’s barbecue.

Takes too long???

The lines are already 2 1/2 innings long!

Thin patties like Hodad's cook fast enough.
Gulden's Mustard for hotdogs

I went to see a Diamondbacks game at the BOB in 2000 and I had the option of putting some spicy mustard on the ol’ hotdog. This choice made me happy.

When given the choice between yellow mustard and spicy mustard

everyone chooses spicy mustard

Exactly. Why doesn't the "Power" see this?
Because yellow mustard isn't real mustard.
I thought it was only used in Spin Art.
When I went to Busch

they had a ton of different condiments

Clorox's ranch dressing still freaks me out
Bush and cond . . . Oh, almost misread that.
Dodger Stadium has a good spicy mustard option as well
Why not have all 3

Dijon, Guldens, and the yellow crap. Because nothing beats Dijon.

And can we get the legit kettle corn back?

It seems as if they just take the small broken pieces of regular popcorn, spray it with corn starch and call it good.

How much of a “no” is In-n-Out at the ballpark?

Like what if we sign In-n-Out as our power hitter? $10m/yr. C’mon guys.

What if they just drive in the In-N-Out truck?

That would work right?

K Street

It could still function as a street.

Don't they only use the truck at fundraisers/church events?

THE FRIARS ARE PLAYING A BASEBALL GAME!!! COUNT IT!

and need donations to sign Maybin
Nope. We had the truck at my freshman orientation in college.

Seeing all the out of state kids have their first In-N-Out is something special.

Did you pay cash to them or did you just give them a raffle ticket thing?
I don't remember. It was like 9 years ago. OH GOD I'M OLD.
I'm just as old

but my point is that the trucks are limited. They don’t do fries and I don’t think they’re set up for individual transactions

I love In-n-Out, but should we be so desperate for an LA chain in our park?
Oh, who am I kidding, of course we should.
I want Chili Verde Nachos
Speaking of nachos

Serious real life carne asada nachos and fries.

None of that current super nacho nonsense.

Also, I was pretty happy with the craft beer selection last year...

but there needs to be more places in the park to get them. If it’s $8 for coors/bud light/urine and $9 for a craft beer, I’m getting the craft every time, but I don’t like having to walk halfway around the park to find it.

I'm located conveniently adjacent to where it was

and I’ve usually got an open lap.

Bingo

They should just do away with Bud and Coors. No one but the visiting fans we hate buy it anyway.

especially Coors.
Rocky Mountain water my ass

Stone comes from Escondido water. They could probably make it from TJ River water and it would still be awesome and better than Coors.

I had a feeling Coors came from your ass.
Nah it comes from the other side

It’s usually brewed over the course of about an hour from other superior beers and then bottled fresh from the source. I believe the current source is Tim Tebow.

I disagree...

I want idiot fans, of other teams, spending their money, in our park, on crap we don’t want.

True

If we let them drink the good beer we might run out.

I can't lie.

I’m guilty if having bought Bud AND Coors on multiple occasions at the ballpark for the sake of convenience.

I've done this

usually after TEQUILA

Oh god, I'm guilty of that too.

I’ll be sitting lazily in my seat somewhere in the deepest part of the park wanting a beer but not wanting to have to hire a sherpa to get there. Then there’s always the process of trying to convince myself ahead of time that [insert whatever piss beer here] isn’t that bad. So, I buy a piss beer and that first sip is filled with INSTANT REGRET.

I think I drank 3 last season.

One was honestly just because I was thirsty and needed some water.

This.

If better beer was conveniently available throughout the ballpark, I’d only drink that. But it’s not (yet).

You're dead to me

Unless you buy me a real beer.

Nah.
Please?

I miss beer.

I refuse to buy beer for avocado haters.
What the hell is an avacado hater? There's not such animal!
So be it

I’ll buy it myself.

You've bought me a beer before though.

:-O

Give it back
Actually

I think I did. #goldenshowers #jk

You're confusing me with John.
You were there too

Doesn't count.

You guys forgot I was even there. Too wrapped up in each other.

I didn't know.

Damnit.

Or a way to get your personal homebrew into the park
Just go visit Neil the Beerman

In the Western Metal building field level. He has tons of craft brews. Alaskan, Ballast Point, Stone.

Now I’ve moved seats further from Neil :(

The good news is there's never a long line at Neil's.
CRAP!

You just reminded me I forgot to renew my seasons!

Am I a bad person...

for thinking Hormel beanless chili and Velveeta is tasty?

Yes

Velveeta is recycled tires dyed yellow.

I need therapy.
Replace the Velveeta with Cream Cheese

Trust me.

Almost as bad as heathens that don't like butter.
Hey, guys.

Can ALL the open threads be this active this season? Friar Fever and I got lonely in here last year.

Yes this

At least on the days I have off from work.

I only look at Gaslamp Baseball at work...

so fulfilling your request should be easy.

Can all the open threads be about food?
This

Baseball is like 50% about drink and food. Why else would it have those convenient breaks to go buy more of both every half inning.

Wait...you didn't like that?

Time to re-examine my life…

Not that I didn't like it.

Just saying we (mostly you) deserve to have more company.

I hope so

I run out of original things to say really fast when I’m alone.

I want Carne Asada Fries.
I want a California adobada burrito from Lolita's
smash burger?

get some ballast points or some other locals?

$2 street tacos?

Green Flash

We need to add Green Flash’s Hop Head Red to the beer selection at PETCO.

Smash Burger's not local. But they get some points for local specialties.
Brody's Burger

From Brody’s Burger and Beer. 1/3lb Cheddear Cheeseburger with bacon, blue cheese and saute mushrooms.

This?

http://www.yelp.com/biz/brodys-burgers-and-beer-jamul

yup
Jamul is pretty damn far, but maybe I'll check it out if I'm feelin' adventurous
beer selection is damn good

plus I live in Jamul……

They must add this to the ballpark

Thanks for adding a picture.

The previous three times you recommended it in the form of written words was too difficult to decipher.

I forgot the picture the last 3 times

Plus I wanted it to look at as I scrolled through the thread.

So do you think Petco Park should serve Green Flash's Hop Head Red Ale?

Also, do you like the Padres’ blue uniforms?

Yes and Yes

Just got my new home jersey in the mail yesterday.

I am Ron Mexico and I approve of this message

Plus get me some Ale Smith Raceway……………….

and a couple of dogs...

Too soon?

Speedway. It's called SPEEDWAY.
SPEEDWAY!!!!!
I get confused sometimes
Vrooooooooom!!!
If you love that beer

I recommend trying to find The Gooch Food Truck. They have amazing onion rings that they batter with the hop head red. This is also why they’re at the brewery like once a week.

I want to buy a coconut

where this Islander dude cuts the top off and you can drink the milk from it at the game through a straw.

there's a fruit vendor guy outside my office who does that
And then take it back and get it filled with a pina colata on a hot day.
A dude huh?

I would have gone with an islander chick, but I’m not going to judge you.

I just want a grass skirt

and muscles… lots of muscles.

Coconut water is the hottest new craze.
It's good after TEQUILA nights.
It's also a diuretic.

which is nice.

The Mrs. uses coconut milk when she makes green curry.
This is a legitimate use of a coconut product.
curry with cocunut milk mixed with coconut rice

heaven

That's a lot of coconut.
I want to buy like 8 individual peanuts

Where an islander dude shells them, lays them out and uses a blowtorch to lightly roast them before sprinkling truffle salt over the whole shebang.

Individual peanuts are expensive...

it’s why they’re sold in bulk.

My Food List

Street Tacos – TJ style cart, fresh tortillas and simple toppings
Corndogs – Good ones! Not Foster Farms. Ever had the ones at Disneyland? They are a meal in itself.
Dairy Queen – I would love a Blizzard on a hot day game, or really any game.
Carne Asada Fries.
Kabobs – Meat, Onion, Meat, Pepper, Meat etc
Satay Cart – Skewers of meat for when you need to Lo-Carb it.

I know all of you love Rocky’s but two doors down is a place called Big Kahuna’s that makes a great hamburger and the BEST chicken teryiaki. That place is awesome.

fairweahter lives!
Lurking

Yeah… it’s been a while since a topic has made me want to post. Food always does it.

Street Tacos and a LEGIT Beer Garden

Its been said before, over and over on this site by many.

But these are by far the best ideas.

Put a Beer Garden in the Candy Factory,

And Street Tacos every where.

Thinking about it, what I really want is some good, dark beers on tap.

I know it’s a bad idea, but I really want a Speedway at the game.

Smoked Porters, Barleywines, Escondidian Black(out) IPA!

Ale Smith Raceway.

I’m super underschooled on Ale Smith.

Its a great educational experience

Not that Ale Smith is my Favorite.

My favorite Beer is Russian River Pliney the Elder, followed by Ballast Point Sculpin. Plus I love most things Deschuettes puts out. But Ale Smith makes some great, great stuff.

Ballast Point should open a tasting room in the Candy Factory
I've been meaning to try their offerings

but we live where we live, and they’re always like 3rd or 4th on the list of craft beers I want to drink the moment I’m ordering. Maybe I go bottle hunting today..

Speedway is one of my top five favorite beers, hands down.
my favorite right now is O'Douls
Not St. Pauli Girl NA?
no that stuff tastes like rotten ass
Have you tried Kaliber?

Good stuff.

is it?

i have yet to try it

It tastes just like Guinness

…if you’re into that sort of thing.
I’m not a Guinness guy but as far as brews without booze, it’s the best I’ve had.

i effing love Guinness
Try it with a shot of Drambuie. Change your life.
It'd change his life, alright.
Meh

It has nothing on Clausthaler Amber.

I'll have to give that a try.

I just checked out their site.

Yeah Barleywine

Now there’s a drunk Youtube video waiting to happen.

I'd drink Speedway all game

and wake up in a gutter somewhere

and you blame this on the beer?
i have done that
who hasn't woken up in a gutter?
directly from speedway too
other offender

Old Rasputin

worst ever

Is when I decided to drink Arrogant at the River when everyone else was drinking CL Smooths……not the best plan in the world.

Oooh Arrogant

I’d like to say I remember my first one… but then I’d be lying.

I remember my next one......47 minutes to Lunch!
What are they doing with that wine bar they made at the end of last season?
So is it settled?

Big Macs. Everybody agrees?

Do Big Macs even qualify as burgers anymore?
do they even have meat in them?

It’s been years, but I seem to remember a whole lot of shredded lettuce and 3 buns.

Going by this Thread.....

Maybe we should change our names to the “San Diego Hops”

Waterfront has a good burger. not a burger spot as much as it is a bar that serves a good burger. yeah…

Cameron Maybin
He is a pretty good burger.
Houston Street Tacos
Huston
Yeah...

Ima dumbass.

and I can't spell good
Actually it was his parents that couldn't spell

But we won’t hold it against him…

The ballpark should have microwaves

so we can bring frozen dinners.

Nothing beats a Gluton Man T.V. dinner.
Jalapeno handshake burgers.
I haven't lived here since '02...

But my faves have always been the double-double at In-N-Out or Rocky’s. If I had to pick one, I go Rocky’s just because having an ice cold beer with a burger is awesome.

dude

we didn’t get to snuggle when you were here.

double u tee eff

here til Sunday

I haven’t even touched jodes yet. :)

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

oh this changes everything

DRAMA IS IN A GLB OT FROM SAN DIEGO
or does it?

He’s being all coy and shit.

coy = sexy
that would just be redundant.
I'M STILL CLEAN.
jodes

Let’s not go overboard here.

Shut the f_ck up, I'm an angel.

ಠ_ಠ

Tacos el Gordo. Mexican Fiesta.

Legit ungringo mexican food.

Growing up in PL I have to go with Hodads for a burger

For Mexican, got to go to Hodad’s neighboor, Nicos. Best breakfast burritos and best carnitas. I swear I could eat carnitas from Nicos everyday.

As for beer, they should have plain old Budweiser at more stands. I remember one game I had to search high and low for a regular Budweiser, I was sitting out in left field.

My choices

Burger = Hodad’s

Margarita = Old Town Mexican Cafe

Pizza = Fat Boyz in Mission Beach

Craft Beer = Karl Strauss

Tacos = Cotijas in Lemon Grove

BBQ = Still haven’t had good BBQ in San Diego……..and it’s definitely NOT Kansas City BBQ down by Seaport Village.

KC BBQ is terrible
I think the only good Karl is Pintail, too.

The rest are meh. May as well drink a Sam Adams.

Karl has been upping their game on the special releases lately.

The 22nd Anniversary was great, and Two Tortugas is pretty good.

I'm totes open to this.

Impress me, Karl. Dare you.

bulls bbq next to brick by brick off morena
The Wrangler in El Cajon...home of Jimmy Johnson
Another burger

Charley’s in Lemon Grove is killer.

pretty good, been there a few times

what about Johnny B’s?

Johnny B's in La Mesa

I used to go there all the time. Became good friends with Johnny. His Sunday special (salad/bread/steak/fries/beans/drink) for about $8 is the best deal in the city. Great place to watch NFL on Sunday. Agree about great burgers there.

I pretty much eat anything with hamburger meat and a bun, so...

I have no preference. If they gave away free burgers, those would be my favorite.

Ballpark Food Idea

Grunion Run Dogs. Recreate the SoCal grunion run tradition. Charge people to put on blindfolds and chase hot dogs through the sand in the beacher seats. Like put the hot dogs on little strings that the kids pull and you can eat whatever you can catch in a 30 second window.

Yes, blindfold people and make them feel for hot dogs. We will all make new friends.

Wait, are you supposed to be blindfolded on a grunion run?
No but it's dark outside

And the ballpark is too well lit.

Crazy/ee Burger

Not saying it’s the best necessarily but they have some pretty unique/delicious options

Antelope Burger is incredible

Though Kangaroo and Wild Board are damn fine as well.

You don't like avocado but you like mountain lion and armadillo.

It’s all coming into focus.

I've had raw horse meat...

it’s similar, but different.

I'll suggest a horse burger next time I'm there
They could call it the Mr. Ed burger
Food Idea

I still want them to institute the 100 hot dog club. Eat a hundred hot dogs over the course of a season and get a pin.

doesn't seem like that hard to do.
That's what I'm saying

I’d wear that pin with pride, though there’s no way I could get it in a season.

Over 1 per game

Imagine a 12 game homestand. It’d make me hate the taste real fast.

You'd definitely have to mix up the condiments.
Condom Mints...

they’re chewy.

and a pacemaker

pin… or pain?

I'd have that pin inside 2 weeks.
Another food idea

Posted on Twitter: Cartons of milk after a loss. Like the Padres lose and you buy a carton of milk on the way out so you can drink it and complain about how hot it is outside and how milk was a bad choice.

Pour it on the ground

Walk out of the ballpark tear-free.

Yikes can you imagine the smell the next morning?
"East Village suffers feral cat outbreak."
chocolate milk

so we can can all have chocolate milk farts by the 5th inning

Can they install phone booths outside the park

so we can all be in glass cases of emotion?

Exit coupons for adameve.com

So that we may venture forth and fornicate ourselves.

Oh.

I would actually be all for that.

It's hard to get excited about adding food to Petco based on local favorites

When whatever they put in is just going to be a marked up version of that food. Just feels like getting ripped off. I like it when I go to other parks and get local stuff since I may not have time to make it out to wherever those local spots are. Convenience cost. So should I think of this like I’m a San Diego tourist?

Then again, it’s probably worth noting that I rarely feel the need to buy food at the ballpark.

/Debbie Downer’d

SHUT UP WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT TASTY FOOD
I wonder if this was useful to Mentor at all.
a big fat gross

carne asada burrito from any corner taco shop except Robertos
also, Karina’s Taco Shop in Leucadia makes good shrimp tacos/burritos and chicken tacos
Ceviche….I want ceviche – maybe mex style in a cup with red liquid
Chicks Natural rotisserie chicken

finally..maybe a weed shop with some delicious snack items

Hey, what's wrong with Roberto's?!
It's not Juanberto's?
flavorless

there are so many better places in SD for carne asada

Turkey Leg

anybody use to get those at the Q? I was always down for 1 a year. Every year I would think about how good it would be to walk around eating a giant smoked turkey leg. Then I would get one, take 4 bites, realize it was not as great as I thought, and spend the 4-8th inning trying to get the cardboard like turkey meat out between my teeth.

Was it a batter dipped deep fried turkey leg smothered with guacamole and drizzled with syrup served with a fried snickers chaser?
As far as Hot Dogs go

My biggest complaint about them, is that the variety of hot dogs is not consistent in the park. You have your cheap ones, then you have the Friar Dog, and then you have the speciality dogs, plus the different sausages.

But I always forget what dogs I can get where, and some dogs I have to half way around the stadium to get. Which sucks since it takes forever to get to my seats from the plaza level.

What the hell happened to dollar hot dog night? Who's with me?!?!?
July dollar days.

Dollar hot dogs and sodas. Oh man.

There was nothing like 5 dogs loaded with mustard and onions and a nice adult beverage
I actually liked the 5 for 5 deal.

get two of those for the kids and they were set for the game, Mom & Dad drank the sodas

The sonoran dog is really good and could become a signature item

It just needs to be renamed. Sounds like arizona dbags food.

It sounds like Arizona food because it is.

And it can’t be a signature food if they don’t start cooking the bacon properly. Too chewy right now.

Love Sonoran Hot Dogs

a benefit of living in arizona, can get a good one anytime

justdave is so into this discussion...

That the number of times his signature has appeared has managed to land this post on the SI Yankees Blog page. That’s called SEO.

this is so awesome on so many levels.
Dude, first blog

Some poor old Yankee fan from Staten Island is so confused……….that a city like San Diego exists.

That's AMAZING. Screencap it!
Top 5 Burgers (to someone late to the party)

1. Hodad’s
2. Slaters 50/50
3. Burger Lounge
4. In N Out
5. Rockys

I was thinking Slater's 50/50 too but that's not really a San Diego food brand.
Nor is In-N-Out.

Which leaves Hodad’s (YUM), Burger Lounge (overpriced), and Rocky’s (ain’t gonna happen).

That's why I didn't say In N Out either.
SD food brand or not

In-N-Out is simply awesome. Rocky’s would be great too, but that won’t happen. Sadly never been to 50/50 or Burger Lounge.

Why wouldn't Rocky's happen?

People keep saying that. I could see it happening before In-N-Out.

Aren't they the big pub-style burgers?

Those take too long to cook.

Because there's nothing to them

Literally

50/50 is okay, not great

The idea is of mixing 50% ground beef and 50% ground bacon sounds better than it is.

triple blend for burgers.....

I’ve said too much already

Does it have to ONLY be in San Diego?

I would still put Slaters against anything Rocky’s has, and it isn’t even a contest.

Re: Burger Lounge, they do have the BEST TURKEY BURGER I’ve ever had in my life. Don’t know if that counts

Mentor did say "San Diego food brand".
Pizza Port deserves some love with respect to pizzas

Plus, you beer lovers (and cider lovers if you’re a beer-hating liquor lover like me) should enjoy its ample stock of adult beverages. :-)

Plus, their wings kick all kinds of ass!

Prefer their wings
Local places: Surf Brothers Teriyaki, Pizza Port, breakfast by Pipes Cafe.
Also, maybe it's because social media is starting to take over, but I fcuking love that Garfinkel is making an effort to San Dieaganize Petco

At least they’re trying to improve the ballpark experience.

Best burger

My favorite burger is the county is Nessy Burger, the small stand next to the 15 on the 76. But like all good burgers they’re fresh and made to order which will never work at the ball park.

At baseball games in Japan...

you can bring your own beer into the game. If you run out of beer or didn’t bring yours, there are young ladies walking around with keg’s strapped to their backs. What they need at PetCo is a dude rolling around with a hibatchi grilling up burgers to order…he’d need a vegi and condiment buddy too.

Of course Japan

that is like a whole different country though.

I want cute girls bowing before me

with a beer in their hand at every game

Driven past this place hundreds of times

Never stopped. Must correct.

I don't know...

This review and, more importantly, the pictures that accompany it, make it seem pretty unappetizing. I mean, look at that cheese! It’s not even melted!

I've gotta try it once

but the odds of me going “I’m hungry, let’s drive out to nowhere” are still super slim.

BTW… Speedway… f*ck. If it’s at the ballpark, it’ll have to be in 8 oz. cups.

Yeah. You do not serve pints of Speedway.

Though I’m told once upon a time Live Wire served pitchers of it.

I drank a whole bottle on Saturday

it was my 6th beer of the night.

Sunday sucked.

unmelted cheese...

Means it wasn’t under a heat lamp. At least that’s how it was when I worked concessions at the zoo. Fresh off the grill and melted cheese were two different things.

Cheese should be applied while the burger is still cooking so it melts.

A cold, unmelted slice of American cheese has no business going in anybody’s mouth.

My dad puts american cheese on graham crackers. WTF is that all about?!
The Jimmy

Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern has the best local burger…The Jimmy.

Also, for the heck of it:

Margarita—don’t know, don’t care
Pizza—Woodstock in PB and in SDSU area. Also, there’s a hip place somewhere in North Park that throws an egg on their pizza
Craft Beer—I love me some Woody
Guacamole—Haven’t been to a guacamole store lately
Tacos—I’m gonna say burritos here and argue for Ortiz’s in OB
BBQ—Phil’s Phil’s Phil’s

Issues

Margarita = Old Town Mexican Cafe/El Agave
Pizza = Bronx Pizza, don’t even go there
Tacos = El Indio – I like the pureness
BBQ = 1) Famous Daves, 2) Phils, 3) Bubbas

I heard El Indio uses velveeta.
A lot of the Mexican places don't use authentic cheese.

Hell, El Ranchito puts American on their quesadillas… pretty sure El Indio isn’t legit either.

The El Indio next to Shakespeare? If that's the one, then yes that place sucks. All of their food tasted like it came from a can.

The trash can.

El Indio sucks

Nicos in OB is my favorite.

Lucha Libre 2 years ago was a damn good place for tacos

It’s still good now, but in a diminished capacity.

Where's Lucha Libre?

I’ve never heard of it.

Washington & San Diego I think

It’s right off of the 5 & Washington.

I guess my problem is that I’ve never liked tacos, I’m a burrito guy through and through. Lucha has some just ridiculous burritos but its’ not my favorite. That honor goes to El Cotixan’s fajita burrito

Washington and India technically

right across the intersection from Gelato Vero.

I like the food at Lucha Libre although I can’t get their signature items (vegetarian) but the real draw is the general style of the place and calling in to reserve the Champions Table. It’s the perfect f-u to everyone waiting in line.

I like Nicos

I used to work right by the one in Sorrento Valley.

Tons of legit places use velveeta

The best cheese steaks use cheese from a can. What kind of cheese do you want them to use?

Oaxaca cheese

If you’ve never had queso oaxaca, then you haven’t lived life. It takes the best qualities of cheese and butter and puts them in one amazing package.

Whenever I’d make street tacos for friends, I’d use queso oaxaca.

Seven trades this offseason, some of them massive

and the thread about food is bigger than all the trade discussions put together

It's because we're a bunch of fatties.
And nothing better to do than debate the intricacies of the meat patty and what it shares a bun with
Hey

I’ve eaten food almost every day of my life. I’m qualified, okay?

What if I've never missed a day of food?

Am I more qualified than you? Please say yes. There’s gotta be one thing I’m better at than you.

hmmm

Well does one of you get out to more places and eat a wider variety of foods? Does one of you specialize in a certain type of food? I mean food is such a broad topic that each of you could be more qualified depending on the scope of the study. If its avocado’s or alcohol, sadly FF, It would make you less qualified.

Qualifications are: 1-Do you like food? 2-Are you a fatass?

If the answers to the above are both yes, then you are clear to proceed.

can number 2 really happen without number 1?

i mean im sure there might be that rare exception or maybe you became such a fatass that food now repulses you….anyways..I am clear to proceed!
