called “Triumph and Tragedy: The Rise and Fall of the 1984 Padres.” It was amazingly well done. My favorite thing was when Goose Gossage found out he was going into the hall, he called Dick Williams to let him know. Dick’s wife was in the background asking who was on the line and Dick said “it’s the kid who should’ve walked Gibson.”
Now he belongs to the ages

RIP Dick
1984 was my favorite Padres team EVER. Dick was badass. I wish there were more managers like him.

I bet at 82 he could still kick a young buck's ass.

I'm happy he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in time for him to enjoy it for a little while.

I watched a show on MLB Network last week
called “Triumph and Tragedy: The Rise and Fall of the 1984 Padres.” It was amazingly well done. My favorite thing was when Goose Gossage found out he was going into the hall, he called Dick Williams to let him know. Dick’s wife was in the background asking who was on the line and Dick said “it’s the kid who should’ve walked Gibson.”

I think what happened was she answered and asked who it was.
Then Goose told her “Tell him it’s the guy who should have walked Gibson” and she said “Oh, hi, Goose!”

I heard a replay of the old Darren and Philly Billy interview of Dick Williams on the radio the day he died.
TTG’s version is the way that Dick told it to them.

Godspeed Dick
You were a master. Doubly so for someone like me as an A’s and Pads fan…

I wonder if Jonathan Holmes has figured out who Dick Williams is yet.

I'm going to be honest
and say that I didn’t know who he was either. He is before my Padres time, and I’m not up on Padres history so much.

thank you for your honesty
Now, go learn your Padres history! Not too hard, there’s just 40 years, with only 2 pennants.
If you learn a little about 1969 , maybe the 1976-77 period…1984, the 1993 firesale, and 1996 &98….you’ll be fine.

I got 1998 covered.
Just need to work on the rest.
scout1222 - July 7, 2011
you're halfway there

That is a great story. I wonder how many other ballplayers have similar tales.
EvilSammy - July 7, 2011
Who's that?
