I'm so glad the Padres are taking action against Khalil Greene. This oughta teach him to show emotion! How dare he?! His behavior was totally unacceptable and it certainly does not follow the philosophy of the Padres.
You may remember that Khalil punched a storage chest at the end of July and broke his left hand. As a result he was unable to finish the season. Let's not forget that he also damaged Padres property. He dented a storage chest.
In all seriousness, this is the right thing to do. Khalil threw a tantrum, let the team down and he should face the consequences. As a result of his self-inflicted injury the Padres are saying that he didn't fulfill his contract and they probably lost more games than they should have.
"In a specific sense, it's about recovering payment for services not rendered based on contract language that legally supports our position," Alderson said. "In the larger sense, it's about deterring this kind of conduct in the future because the consequences can be critical to a team.
"In our case, I don't think it was critical to the outcome of our season, but I guess with Khalil we might not have lost 99 games."
I'm not necessarily buying that part of the argument. Khalil was having an absolutely atrocious year. I think it actually made the team better by having Luis Rodriguez at short.
The UT is reporting that if the Padres pro-rated his contract he could lose up to $1.47 million.
I'm 100% behind Alderson and the Padres on this call. I also love how Alderson plunges a dagger in Khalil's back with this quote:
"I hope he understands our position," Alderson said.
Gaslamp Ball discussed the possibility of the Padres not paying Khalil back when the incident happened. One side thought that Khalil Greene should not be paid for a self inflicted injury and the other side said that the Padres should let it go because it would discourage free agents from coming to the Padres.
Sandy Alderson commented then:
"Anything we decide or conclude with respect to Khalil and his contracted will be a private matter that we wouldn't comment on," Alderson said. "That will be true regardless of what transpires."
Tom Krasovic also wrote:
A player's agent said the players union would respond with a grievance against the Padres if the club attempts to deny Greene any salary.

Well
This will DEFINITELY make players from around the league wanna come play for such a great organization.
I hate this organization.
Winfield's Ghost - October 1, 2008
We've made some dumbass decisions in the past...
….but this is right near the top of the list.
Drama - October 1, 2008
I get that it seems petty, cheap, etc.
But what if Khalil had injured himself juggling flaming swords? Wouldn’t we all agree that he had let the team down by his own actions? And that because he gets paid to play baseball, he should probably avoid activities where flaming swords can impale his hands?
Dalton - October 1, 2008
If he could juggle flaming swords....
…he could hit a slider.
Drama - October 1, 2008
No, in this scenario there's a flaming sword through his hand.
He sucks at juggling, too.
Dalton - October 1, 2008
This is about Khalil, isn't it?
Drama - October 1, 2008
this was my argument when it first happen
you think a FA, or even a restricted FA would want to come here, or except a contract extension? This just make the Padres look cheap.
Sammy G - October 1, 2008
This is so insufferably stupid
and I could care less that Khalil is the player involved in this situation.
Not only will this make the Padres look petty and foolish, but this pretty much guarantees that Khalil will leave after 2009. Some people are ecstatic about that, but it’s pretty weak to pretty much force a player out of town like this. If they don’t want him, they should just trade him.
I’d love to see what would happen if someone like Jake did this. I would be willing to guess that the FO wouldn’t touch it. I would also be interested to see what would happen if someone like Jake comes out and publicly lampoons this decision.
So, at the end of the day, here’s what we have: The Padres are up $1 million that they can pay to Mark Prior next year, while losing their Gold Glove-caliber SS, damaging their reputation in the league, and further exacerbating the tension between the FO and the players.
Genius move.
Phantom - October 1, 2008
I agree that he’ll be gone after 2009 because of this. And that the FO probably doesn’t view him as a long(er) term option at shortstop, and plans on letting him walk. But who was going to trade for Khalil this season? And what would they have traded? I don’t think this is some calculated move to “force” Khalil Greene out of town. It’s the Padres being cheap right before the owner is about to slash payroll.
Dalton - October 1, 2008
He definitely cratered his trade value
this season, without a doubt. But if this was their long-term plan, they should have dealt him during last year’s offseason when his value was at it’s peak.
And I would say that this could be an effort to give the FO some cover when he leaves town. Of course, saying that you couldn’t sign a player because he despised the way you treated him isn’t exactly better than admitting you were cheap. Regardless, this seems to be a really odd move by the FO, and as many mention down below, this should have never been made public.

Stop kidding around
jbox - October 1, 2008
Makes sense to me
But I think most of my curiosity is, how did the Tigers handle Joel Zumaya, and his litany of self-inflicted injuries? From Guitar Hero, to the shoulder injury during the wildfire escape, and the keg-stands and binge drinking “rehab”…
The part about the losing 99 games, and all the contract jargon seems redundant- I think all that needed to be said was:
“Khalil put himself into a position where he couldn’t do his job (by breaking his hand punching things in anger), so we as his employers, were put into a position where we didn’t have to pay him (for not doing his job)”
’nuff said

Did Peavy get
money deducted for celebrating and cracking a rib? Is Kouz being warned about jumping in that jet this week? Silly.
ABY - October 1, 2008
Peavy's rib was an accident
so was David Wells’ wine glass.
You don’t accidentally punch a storage chest.
jbox - October 1, 2008
so you're allowed
to juggle flaming swords so long as no-one loses an eye?
ABY - October 1, 2008
I think MLB contract have rules about risky behavior
so flaming swords would probably fall under that. Kouz probably had to get ok’d by the Padres to fly with the Blue Angels.
jbox - October 1, 2008
what disturbs me.
is that we are hearing about stuff like this. If the Padres want to reprimand Khalil b/c his acitons did hurt the team and it no excusable, then fine: sit down with him with his agent and maybe a union rep (CY) and work out a “reprimand”. Handle it internally with class. Puting this in the media is just bad and filing a grievance is awful.
Technically the Padres are in the “correct” for this, but it doesn’t make it a good business or organization decision.
Sammy G - October 1, 2008
Completely agree

From what I can tell
Darren went asking, and he was told the Padres already had withheld money from Khalil, which is not true.
I like leaks cuz I like to know stuff we wouldn’t otherwise know, but WHO THE HELL IS SPREADING THE FUD! Find the mole!

How about when David Wells sliced his hand open on a wine glass?
Did they dock his pay, or just make him promise to stick to beer cans?

perfectly honest mistake
he tripped over a bar stool.
not his fault it was there, someone moved it there.
in fact, it was probably khalil…
that bastard.
justdave - October 1, 2008
Khalil
I can’t believe not one of you truly understands what happened in that dugout. Khalil was angry and frustrated…then swung his fist through the air at nothing…at the very last second Craig Colbert pushed the storage chest right into the path of Khalil’s hand. I heard Wally even helped him do it.
Drama - October 1, 2008
at a normal job
if a person did something stupid and were injured they’d still get workers compensation from their job and dissability if they couldn’t work after that injury… so it’s kind of the same thing except for being a professional athelete and not like a file clerk or something but yea…
i see both sides of why they have a right to ask for money back and why Khalil has a right to keep it… i just don’t see why the FO would want to deal with the hassle of the players union… and i guess thats what makes them look so cheap
C8LIN B - October 1, 2008
Except
A file clear doesn’t have anything written into their contract that says that they can have pay withheld due to stupid injuries. Khalil does. Therein lies all the difference.
I also don’t think this move makes them look cheap. I buy that they want to do this in order to deter other players from doing similar things.
