Is Chase Headley headed for Cooperstown?
This much we know: When the Padres were really stumbling through May, Towers didn't want to put the pressure of having to lift the team on the 24-year-old Headley's shoulders.
This much we know: The Padres either have no respect for Headley or for the fans. It's got to be one or the other, right? They really think Headley is so delicate that he can't handle the pressure of the Major Leagues. Now Towers says he'll finally bring up Headley as a DH next week. He must be an absolutely atrocious outfielder, because we're more than willing to play guys like McAnulty and Huber who can barely hit or play defense.
What do the Padres know about Headley that we don't know? There doesn't seem to be any rational reason why you wouldn't want him on this club... a month ago. I'm totally flashing back to Xavier Nady never getting playing time when he was outplaying all the regulars. Does Headley wet the bed? Is that it? Is that how scouts know he can't take the pressure? That's not so bad. Mikey Mantle wet the bed until he was 16 years old.
I say we try to build up fan expectations higher than ever before in the next week or 10 days and see if we can pressure Towers into keeping Headley down in AAA just to mess with him like he's been messing with us.

towers never cared
about putting pressure on anyone before why should he now?
i think he is just trying to prove a point that it wasn’t financial… which is was… and i don’t care just bring the guy up here and see what he can do. dang.

He's the one creating pressure
If he would have just brought him up when we needed him, nobody would have thought twice about it.
jbox - June 9, 2008
he could have brought him up for opening day too
Dear Stupid Kevin Towers
it is called on the job training
real atheletes can handle it
give the kid a chance
I hate you!

There must be a reason for all this
after all, there is a reason why KT and the rest of the FO is paid the big bucks to run a MLB Team. What that reason is,......hell if I know. First we were so far behind he didn’t want to put pressure on him to bring the team back. Now that we are only 6.5 GB, he doesn’t want to put too much pressure on him to carry the team to a title? WTF? He CANNOT be any worse defensively than PMAC or Huber and if Chase plays LF we have an opportunity to put a better offensive unit on the field.

Chase News
The reason why he isn’t being called up is because they are busy switching him into a pitcher. Apparently, he already has
Oh, man I can’t wait for him to be our ace pitcher and lead us to a World Series Title!Sam (sdsuaztec4) - June 9, 2008
i feel like
all the pressure and all the fuss and all the will he or wont he be up and everything is making Chase Headley into Casey at the Bat….
that people aren’t just gonna expect him to be a good player that they are going to expect him to be the best to carry this team and then when he isn’t everyone is gonna be in shock and awe
They do the same thing with Adrian… not that he isn’t a great player but everyone seems to expect him to hit a homerun… if the guy hits a routine pop up people act like they’ve never seen a game before and think that ball is going 500 feet, and if he strikes out they act like the world just exploded
It would have been nice to just let the kid start the season with a big league club and be comfortable from the start with his team mates and his fan base and the ballpark and everything
and since that didn’t happen get on it and get that kid here now

I'm pretty sure
That the plan was always to bring him up in mid June. In fact this whole DH thing may have been part of the plan since February. Towers has always seemed to hint that June would be the time frame and has soundly denied that it’s about money (of course if it’s about making sure he have competitive teams in the next 5 years, then it really IS about money, since keeping him cheap with probably help keep us competitive). I’m not saying it’s the soundest plan, but I was never in favor of bringing up Headley in April and it’s not the best idea to kill your start-of-season plans before June (Edmonds-style) unless there’s an absolute need (injuries, suspensions, etc). One Edmonds-style switcheroo (plus our pitching injuries and bullpen carousel) was probably enough for May, the Hairston-PMac expert was noble and justifiable, but June means it’s time to move on. Even though those guys are starting to show signs of breaking through. It’s unfortunate that giving Headley a chance denies PMac a real chance (and no, 100 AB in a platoon role is not a real chance), but Headley’s a future star and PMac might’ve been a future league average regular.

lots of recs, guess i better fanshot it
thanks guys :)

I expect no less than
50 home runs and 3 unassisted triple plays. Maybe then, crowds will return to Petco and actually cheer a couple times a game. Other than that, keep him in Portland – don’t mess with the “magic”.
planetjeffy - June 10, 2008
bring up Sidd Finch aleady!
I mean Chase Headley. I get the two confused.
Boilermaker19 - June 10, 2008
*already

Trade him
That SOB Headley has ruined this team and he’s not even on it yet it. Let him ruin some other team.
Winfield's Ghost - June 10, 2008
Drama would follow Headley anywhere
Tampa Bay, Toronto, Toledo. It doesn’t matter. If we trade him now we would lose a damn good gaslamp baller. Even though he has destroyed the 2008 Padres, let’s not let him take us out, one by one.
DON’T SELL YOUR SOULS TO HEADLEY! HE IS AN EVIL VAMPIRE!
The Kipper - June 10, 2008
I think you're overestimating Drama's value
Winfield's Ghost - June 11, 2008
Also
I can’t wait to see Bud put him in the lineup as a DH after the Cooperstown game. That should be fun to watch.
Winfield's Ghost - June 10, 2008
I can't wait to see Headley in left field
It’s must be comedic how bad this kid sucks at playing the outfield. If he doesn’t get 3 errors on his first 3 opportunities, then I want my money back.
(i haven’t paid any money)

I understand
the pressure argument in other cities, like NY and Boston where the media are just ridiculous…but SD has to be one of the most laid back places to play.
Wonder if there are other considerations like time on the clock, options, etc.
thenerdhater - June 10, 2008
Exactly
and they are going to play him in Yankee Stadium for his first game? No pressure.
jbox - June 10, 2008
Headley
The guy got a pinch hit single in the 13th inning of game 163. He can handle the pressure of that old dump in da bronx.
Wonko - June 10, 2008
somewhat unrelated but when you bring up the yankees..
......am I the only person who thinks the Padres should act like the Yankees and start growing hideous Unity Moustaches?
Seriously try to imagine Khalil Greene with a 70’s Porn Star moustache and try not to laugh. Its too much for me to handle.
justdave - June 10, 2008
Use Headley at SS.
Since Headley’s original position was at 3rd, can we use him at SS? Put a little pressure on Khalil to get better at the plate or put him in when Khalil has a day off?
CaleciaPad - June 10, 2008
In the name Jesus H Christ
The H clearly stands for Headley.
I will now go to confession…
justdave - June 10, 2008
This makes me
What to dress up in some sort of old timey clothing (knights of the crusade outfits?) with crosses on the chests and a sign that says “Chase Headley = Savior!” at the first home game he plays in. That ought to get Towers’ goat.
Wonko - June 10, 2008
that would be hilarious
if you got a bunch of people to show up like that!
ABY - June 10, 2008
im so in for that
justdave - June 10, 2008
The Call-up Crusaders?
Axion - June 10, 2008
nice
we gotta have coconuts and a minstrel…
ABY - June 10, 2008
Where'd you get the coconuts?
Sam (sdsuaztec4) - June 10, 2008
same place he got the tomatoes...
justdave - June 10, 2008
Here
ABY - June 10, 2008
We found them.
Found them? In Mercia?! The coconut’s tropical!
What do you mean?
Well, Mercia’s a temperate zone!
The swallow may fly south with the sun, and the house martin or the plover may seek warmer climes in winter, yet these are not strangers to our land.
.. Are you suggesting that coconuts migrate?
Not at all. They could be carried.
Wonko - June 10, 2008
What?
A swallow carrying a coconut?
It could grip it by the husk!
It’s not a question of where he grips it! It’s a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut.
Well, it doesn’t matter. Will you go and tell your master that Arthur from the Court of Camelot is here?
Listen. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right?
Please!
Am I right?
Sam (sdsuaztec4) - June 10, 2008
I don't know that!
.....aaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…..
ABY - June 10, 2008
Love that name
His first game in SD should be the Kouz Koozies game against Detroit on Friday Jun 20. I’ll be there, I’ll have to see if I can dig up a costume somewhere.
Wonko - June 10, 2008
20th or 21st
either of those will work :)
