Draft Day Discussion

The draft is going to happen today and the Padres have several picks. I don't claim to follow the draft very closely, but I'm more than willing to hear all about guys you think will be getting firesold away from the Padres in 8 years, so consider this an Open Thread.

Paul DePodesta has a post up about draft strategy and the thought of getting players who will be big leaguers as opposed to "high ceiling" guys. It's essentially one of the Moneyball themes to not become totally enamored with guys that look good in baseball pants and instead look for MLB caliber guys.

At this point, I'll settle for either one. If we're gonna field a sub .400 winning percentage, at least give me some eye candy. ROWR!

Yahoo guy

Just posted this in SLPiH, but the Yahoo guy has us picking a first baseman out of Cal. That doesn’t really make sense in any way, but thanks Yahoo guy.

thinking 4 years out

Sure. Why not. Light a fire under Adrian’s lazy butt.

Then

that would be lighting a fire under Kyle Blanks’ butt, too, I guess.

Yeah. He needs to get taller to be pro.
Agreed.

They should have him work with CY and Colt in the offseason.

Yahoo guy....

Is that pronounced Yaw-who? Or Yay-who?

First one is Yaw, second one Yaw, third one is Yay.

Thanks for the clarification.
Steve Henson at Yaw-hoo also has this:

Boston Red Sox – Reese Havens, SS (South Carolina): The Red Sox have long coveted the cerebral, mistake-free Havens despite his relatively low ceiling. Havens is the type of player who makes his teammates better, a consistent performer and leader. If he doesn’t make it on the field, he might join Theo Epstein in the front office before he’s 30.

Wow. We can also draft potential GMs??? KT is getting up there in yrs…

Geoff Young at Ducksnorts

has a nice little breakdown of who he’d like us to pop at 23 and who he thinks we will pop at 23. It’s pretty good reading for anyone unfamiliar with these kinds of propsects.

Mock Drafts...

This guy says we’re taking Daniel Schlereth. LHP from the University of Arizona.

This guy says we’re taking Shooter Hunt. RHP from Tulane.

This guy says we’re taking Luke Burnett. RHP from Louisiana Tech.

mock drafts are great

When I did my mock draft, I projected us taking Schlereth and then Hunt and Burnett in a groundbreaking “two for one”, so I don’t know what these chumps are talking about.

Schlereth would be such a bad pick here

I just said the same thing over at DS, but people have been in love with him since he was 14 yrs old because his dad is Mark Schlereth. He was absolutely overrated in the state of CO as a high school player because of that fact and he’s way too high on people’s boards right now because of his bloodlines. Taking him would be a mistake.

More on Schlereth

Baseball America is projecting we’ll take him.

The Padres could go in a number of directions, depending on what happens in front of them. They’d like a quality righthanded college bat, but almost all of the top hitters are lefties. If it’s a pitcher, they seem to be zeroing in one of the Arizona relievers, Perry or Schlereth, over a starter such as Hunt. San Diego values pitchability, so rumors that Mississippi righthander Lance Lynn is a candidate won’t die, though he’d be a reach.
Schlereth

His sister Alexandria would be a nice addition to Petco Park.

Yes on Alex, No on Daniel

I’ll tell you right now – he’ll never throw a pitch at the major league level.

Well, you are the official GLB Scouting Director
Finally

I have a title. And its not profane.

Sports Illustrated

has an interesting piece about Matt Bush. Apparently he’s attained a rare mythos as a 1-1 flameout (thanks a lot for recovering, Josh Hamilton!).

I really hate these kind of articles

As Dex points out on a near weekly basis, the baseball draft is broken. Every year, every single team passes over a guy who makes it. Criticizing a team for those “mistakes” is just ridiculous. Certainly, when you have a run of guys who haven’t made it, the criticisms become louder, but every team every year passes over a guy who makes it. It’s so dumb.

Hmmmm...

I’ve noticed you’ve been really kissing Dex’s ass quite a bit as of late. You trying to get a raise? A corner office at GLB Headquarters?

he's trying to score a copy of "foreskin gump"
I already have a corner office

I thought everyone did. You don’t? Oh, awkward…

What???

“And I said, I don’t care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Dex that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I’m, I’m quitting, I’m going to quit. And, and I told jbox too, because they’ve moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn’t bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it’s not okay because if they take my stapler then I’ll set the building on fire…”

MLB needs

to institute NFL draft rules, where once you draft a guy, he belongs to you. Period. He can choose not to sign or to go to school, but he ain’t getting money elsewhere.

yay for the draft!

I bet we draft a left handed middle infielder first.

Is the guy with no arms available?
Yes.

But I heard it’s going to cost an arm and a leg to sign him.

I'll just show myself out...
Any thoughs on who TB is gonna take?

I say they’ll take Posey, but they should take Alvarez.

Everyone is saying

they’ve committed to Beckham. Posey is reportedly going to fall all the way past the Giants since he’s looking for like $8M +.

I hope Selig says "David Beckham"
I heard they are taking Beckham
What a disappointment

to see that Steve Philips is covering this for ESPN. Blech.

As long as Berman isn't there.
Good pt - could be worse
woah did you see bud selig?

he was lit all weird like a ghostly obi-wan kenobi, except evil looking.

it was like the emperor in the obi-wan ghost effect.

I was thinking

it was like that old Abe Lincoln thing at Disneyland where he’s kind of a hologram.

Dammit

He didn’t say David Beckham.

Did he at least say "Victoria"?
He has no sense of humor
Ravech

just felt it was necessary to point that Beckham is African-American. While they were showing us footage of him.

HAHAHAHAHA

Poor Karl. He suffered brain damage when they attached that dead animal to his scalp.

“WHAT’S THAT ON YOUR HEAD?

“A WIG!!”

It is a bad wig, isn't it?
It's so horrible.

Speaking of the B-52’s…did you see Fred Schneider on The Daily Show reading excerpts from McClellan’s book?? Oh my God. I was on the floor. I love me some Fred.

Yes that was fantastic

Fred is always funny.

Selig is so bad at this

Bad at everything really, but really bad at this.

Gawd, AH...

Just say, “Pirates pick (name).”

These guys are a riot

Keith Law on Beckham: “Best chance of anyone in this draft to be a real superstar.”
Jim Callan on Alvarez: “Best chance of anyone in the draft to be an All-Star.”

They want this to be the NFL Draft so badly.

It’s never going to happen. Ever.

Not ever

They just called Beckham at his house. He had the TV on full blast in the background and everything was echoing and it was impossible to understand everything.

That’s the baseball draft in a nutshell right there.

Come on Royals

Pick a winner!

Bud doesn't even seem like knows the team names

“With the third pick in the draft, the Kansas City…uherah…Royals select…”

"The Chiefs select..."
I FULLY expected that
LOL

They called Hosmer – connection was worse than with Beckham and they just hung up.

Oh, MLB.

Each team should have one minute

This is taking too long.

USD kid to Baltimore

Ater Ravich announced KC was picking AGAIN.

Orioles take the USD kid
Torreros!!!
Giants are up

I want them to draft Zito.

They should really pick Reese Havens.

It’s pretty obvious how much they need a GM.

Hahaha

I actually want Havens for us. Let him play for ten yrs then take over for KT.

LOL

I just heard the Griffy 600 commercial…

Two names are missing from that list….

LOL

are you serious? I wasn’t listening. That’s great.

It was on a blog the other day that I didn't link

As Griffey approaches 600, MLB whitewashes history

"Willie Mays, September 22, 1969…600.
Babe Ruth, August 21, 1931…600.
Hank Aaron, April 27, 1971…600."

Then the screen flips to Griffey, who sits at 599, and he says, "Ken Griffey Jr…. keep watching."

That is so funny
lol

There it is again.

Giants take Posey

Parker, I think.

There is something crazy hot about her.

The greatest line from “Best in Show”: “What are you, a wizard? A genius?”

"I was at Starbucks and he was at the other Starbucks across the street..."

Agreed on the crazy hot thing.

Crazy ass broad.

Would hit.

Posey says this is the best day of his life

They must not have told him it was the Giants that picked him.

"I can't wait to play with Eli..."

“The fans in New York are amazing…”

former charger eli manning?
You know what would make this more interesting?

Show us who the hs guys took to prom. You can tell a lot about a guy based on that one fact.

2nd'd

Also need to cut the cooldown time to 2:30, add whammies

Big bucks, no whammies!

That’s actually strangely appropriate for the draft.

Would be great

“This guy can hit to all fields, has a great glove and based on this chick he took to prom, he REALLY knows what he’s doing. Tremendous upside.”

perhaps...

but it could be that the nicer chick he takes to prom, the more likely he’ll be to get distracted by someone in the minors.

Would provide all kinds of angles to analyze the kid from
lol

What if they’re trying the Todd Walker method to curing a slump?

What's that?
This is an old quote from the Jim Rome show

but I believe it was “putting the wood to the fattest, ugliest chick you can find.”

Mark Grace started it
Ugh

You guys are lucky you’re not listening on XM. They are playing “Shadowplay” by the Killers for every player profile they run after a player is selected. It’s really aggravating, especially since The Killers sound like a Polka band on speed in that song.

this is so lame

nobody applauds. if nobody’s gonna applaud then they should’ve had them in a smoke filled room with the picks being handed up to him on postit notes and index cards.

Nine picks in one hour

You suck, MLB.

Astros select Jason Castro

That guy can sing AND catch???

And lead rogue nations!
"Five tool player/singer/dictator"
Connoisseur of fine tobaccos

The upside is immeasurable!

I wish I was in the Padres draft room

That would be fun to have them throw prospective picks my way.

“Not sexy enough! This one’s almost sexy enough! THIS ONE’S TOO SEXY! TOO SEXY!”

Rangers draft team wore matching outfits
Justin Smoak!

Cigarettes killed my mother

and raped my father!

There goes

Weeks. Damn, there were a lot of hopes we’d get him.

He went a little higher than projected, didn't he?
Yep

Woulda been great in CF.

Los Anguh

LEES Dodgers.

Wow, and I thought it was annoying when Dodgers fans said “Go Doyers!”

Dodgers take HS P/3B
Look forward to

Shelling him/watching him commit E’s

Apparently

they’re not sure whether he’ll stick at third or on the mound.

Beckham

Has far too many facial expressions to be compared to Khalil.

This kid on XM

is stuttering and really not articulate at all. Nice pick, Minnesota!

He was way nervous

Wears his hat poorly, too.

There goes Cooper

Good. Now we can’t draft him. Take that, Yahoo guy!!!

You really hate the idea

of taking a 1B eh? Even if he’s “the best talent available?”

I mean, we would always be able to trade him.

If we were picking top 5, then I'd say okay

if there was a 1B guy rated in that top 5. But when you get out of the top 5 – maybe top 10 – I just don’t see the logic in drafting for a position that we seem fairly solid at. I know we could always trade him – but I want to see guys come up and play for us, not someone else. Purely a personal preference on my part.

Totally reasonable

I think the Padres have just been blasted lately for not picking the best guy available. Of course, I think many of these people don’t know shit when they complain, so we’ll see what happens.

Right

I’d also be more comfortable with a hs 1B because he’d take more time to develop and who knows what will happen. But – in theory – a college 1B should be ready to go much quicker.

I say pick best available

Regardless of position. We’re projecting in most cases at least 3 years away and I’m not gonna say we’re solid at any position in the year 2011. Plus, one of our biggest weaknesses is lack of depth.

The problem with "best available"

is that no one knows who that is after you get out of the top 5, maybe the top 10.

yeah

but what i’m saying is the padres should pick the guy they think the best guy regardless of position the guy’s listed at. a good number of guys will be converted in some way anyway.

So would you take a 1B over a SS

given that apparently we only play 8 guys out in the field and leave the SS position vacant on our minor league clubs?

And again I mean at the 23rd pick – if we’re at the top of the draft, I 100% agree with you – but to me the further you drop down, you have to pay some attention to position.

I should add

I’m not being argumentative – I’m just curious as to the thought process.

my thought process

In the age of free agency, I don’t count on anybody being on the team after this year. Better to load up with the best guy (as projected). My thinking is

Yahoo! is dead on lately.

465 = 450

There goes another guy

that the Padres were probably tracking. Damn.

Plus, how cool would it be to have a guy named Ike?

Well crap

I think I’ll be at lunch when we pick…

Apparently

there are some really good guys still on the board and we pick in 4. Go Pads!

Yeah

I think there are definitely some quality guys gonna be available.

you guys see will is leaving deadspin?

that’s crazy.

We're

on-deck!

that really is crazy

be interesting to see what happens.

i'm totally gonna apply for the post

if you people think i don’t pay attention to padres baseball, wait till you see how little i pay attention to every other sport in the world.

I'm sure you'll wow them

I’m just not sure in what way.

Think we take a pitcher?
Crap

Havens gone.

We’re on the clock.

Richie's son?
Looks a little different
Collier is still there
Kelly is still there (if he'll sign)
Shooter Hunt is still there

And that is an awesome name…

I'm so nervous
I know. And I'm at work where Cardinals and Cub fans are fighting already.
Allan Dykstra!?

We will not let another son of a famous ballplayer go by without us taking a look.

Brewers took the real son of Lenny

Cutter goes to the Brew Crew in the second round. I guess they like a good gene pool too.

Allan Dykstra

First baseman.

Jesus Lopez

Local guy.

Go Broncos!
Let's hear it for another blocked prospect!
Graduate of Rancho Bernardo HS

Do we even look at guys out of the county?

No way, that's work.
That looks

like a pretty mediocre pick to make as your first one. Ofcourse I might be absolutely mistaken because I don’t have any experience with the concept of a Draft. We don’t have something similar in European Sports

Well, without Weeks I was set to be a little disappointed no matter what.
Well that was a big letdown

I’m gonna check and see who made the All-CIF teams three and four yrs ago to figure out who we’ll pick later on.

Ducksnorts

does not approve of this pick, at all. Dykstra is a Boras client, too.

That really irritates me

So much has been made of avoiding Boras guys when we pick at the top, but it’s okay to deal with him later in the round? Makes no sense.

They should've let Geoff represent the Padres.
Well, this is encouraging
As I wrote the other day, this isn’t a need-based pick. Allan is a San Diego native from Rancho Bernardo HS who has been an All-American at Wake Forest. He’s 6′5″, almost 250 lbs and has monster power. Most importantly, he has skills to go along with that raw power.

Allan has had an unbelievably consistent collegiate career, as he’s hit at least 15 homers while also drawing at least 50 walks in each of his three seasons – something nobody else in this draft has done. Allan also produced in the Cape Cod League batting over .300 with walks and power, so he has also proven his skills with a wood bat. In short, his track record is impeccable.

Given his size, power, and patience, comparisions have been drawn to Jim Thome

Who wrote that?
Paul DePodesta
Yeah

They do a lot more research into this stuff than I do. I won’t even try and second guess DePodesta and crew when it comes to the draft.

Well sure

But I’d expect them to focus on all the guy’s positives. The problem for me is that this guy probably would’ve been there at their next pick.

True

But that is a lot of good points.

It's not need based...

Then why did we reach for the guy. Most had him going in the supp round. I even saw someone say he would got in the 3rd or 4th. Why do we want a power hitting DH?

Oh and by the way

Dykstra went to the same high school as me and is not related to Lenny. Lenny’s son Cutter is draft eligible though.

I don't think anyone here

can answer that, but I bet if you keep an eye on DePo’s blog he will let you know.

Boras

thinks Dykstra is special. This could potentially be a real good sign.

for Dykstra maybe

Apparently, a Gaslamp Baller is in the war room

Not DePo. I’m gonna try to get her to take a photo of the action.

I wonder

what they’ll do with their supp picks now.

It's impossible to figure out
Yeah

DS is very much not pleased at all – they feel that Dykstra would have been available.

Cole allegedly wants a ton of cash.

Cole

That’s fine – avoid him – I have zero problem with that. But why do you take a guy that by most accounts was going to be there 20 spots later?

Just baffles me.

Well

A lot of guys have been popped much earlier than anyone thought they would. I’m not sure if the Padres were just unprepared for these contingencies, or if they legitimately felt that Dykstra was a special talent.

If DePo supports this, should we?

It's hard to say (for me)

The weird thing is that the first 22 picks, with maybe one or two exceptions, were pretty much guys projected to go in the first 22 picks. Then this comes out of nowhere. I really appreciate what DePo has to say about the guy, but it really makes me wonder what their board looked like. What I’d really like – and hope we get to some degree – is why they felt the need to grab him at 23.

Yeah

I think maybe the fact that he already has wood bat experience, and power that probably won’t be affected by Petco park played into it. I am looking forward to hearing what he has to say.

Me too
He had

his blog post up moments after he was picked, so he must have been ready for it. I guess just because people project that he will go later doesn’t mean he would. Maybe there are some other teams right now kicking themselves because they didn’t expect the Padres to take him so early.

Right

And I’m pretty sure we’ll hear some version of that. The problem is knowing how much truth there is in that.

I don't know

about that. A bunch of guys popped releivers way earlier than anyone thought. Shooter is still on the board, as is Collier.

Sure

but by and large, most of the guys picked were tagged as first round guys. You can even look at the picks after the Pads. There were really only maybe three, four at the most, who came out of nowhere.

Again – I think an explanation as to why he was the right guy at 23 would be helpful.

A "Fuson" guy

I saw someone refer to Dykstra as this. I think Dykstra was higher on their draft board because they prefer his skill set (Patience and Power) moreso than other teams. This fits in with picks Fuson has made in the past (like Headley). I would rather have taken Hewitt or one of the falling pitchers (Freidrich) as long as we’re not drafting for organizational need.

I'm hoping we draft another first baseman

just to completely blow WG’s mind.

LOL

I would literally explode.

I imagine

they’ll go with a HS pitcher here soon.

Well, look.

Tony Clark can’t be our backup 1B forever.

Dykstra is described more as a DH than a 1B.

So in that sense we have yet to draft a 1B.

OMG, I just figured it out

We are getting sent to the AL West!

nnooooooOOOOOOOooooooo!

At least we wouldn't have to deal with dodger fans anymore.
A fifteen minute break? For what???
Red Sox get Kelly

I know the Pads couldn’t risk taking a guy who has signed to play fball, but if he chooses baseball, we’re gonna hate that we missed on him.

That's a massive 'if'

I don’t think the Padres can afford to gamble that much.

Oh I totally agree

They couldn’t have taken him. But he’ll be one of those guys that people curse about, not recalling the extenuating circumstances.

Man

I am getting absolutely nothing done at work today. Stupid draft.

LOL

Seriously. This is so bad. And for what really?

I think the draft

is for us fans who care way too much about the team. It lets us get incredibly indignant about things we truly know so little about.

Love the supplemental round

it goes by way quick.

So much better
Rapid fire!
Does Bud

still announce these? Or is it way more efficient?

No its someone else

Not sure who it is. MUCH more efficient.

Roy Krasik

So promoted….

Padres up!!!

fingers crossed: first baseman. first baseman. first baseman.

You suck
WE DID IT!!!

JAFF JAFF JAFF

Is Danks still available?
Jeff Decker

is this a good move?

"Comparisons to Matt Stairs"

Signed with ASU.

MLB.com has this to say

While most people were looking at Decker as a hitter, there probably are still some who might consider him on the mound. He can throw upwards of 93 mph with a decent curve, and that arm strength serves him well in the outfield. He’s got a pretty good approach as a hitter and has the chance to hit for pretty good power, looking like a Matt Stairs-like right fielder in the future

Trust me

Padres don’t consider him a pitcher. It makes no sense to convert a good high school hitter to the mound. You can always convert them later if need be and you end up saving wear and tear on their arm.

Also...

1990!!!!!

And that's JAFF

LAFF!

I see that now
we get another pick so quick!

it’s like Christmas!!!

John Forsythe

No information there.

Skilled player, great makeup, very hard-nosed. More later.
He was EXCELLENT in Dynasty

I KNEW you would come thru
Avatar?

Fast Time is so yesterday already.

Uh oh

I think John may go by Logan.

He'll always be John to me

46. Padres, John Forsyth, 3b, Arkansas

More average than power, not especialy toolsy, polished approach, a VERY VERY San Diego pick

Savior Junior?

You could copy and paste that comment from KG for Savior and no one would know.

Answer: "Not especially toolsy...."

Question: How did every one of my ex-girlfriends describe my performance when making whoopee?

Found this comment on SignOnSanDiego pre draft
Clearly offense should be a priority for the Padres staff IMHO. What prospects do you see them going after in the early rounds? I hope the Padres use one of their 3rd round picks to get Arkansas’ 3B Logan Forsythe. Rated by Baseball America as the best player in AR and the 76th overall prospect. Has a great power bat and a strong/accurate arm. Plus he’s versatile – can play 2B, OF, or C. Couldn’t go wrong with him..

That actually sounds quite good.

Hope he can come through at another position than 3B though

We'll see where we are

in 3 years. No use moving him yet.

I see

really have little experience with this Draft thing so I don’t really have a clue about the potential impact of these picks.

3 years is a good rule of thumb for high draft picks

Some guys move faster, but they have to really dominate in the minor leagues o do that (Troy Tulowitzki is an example, drafted in 2005 debuted in 2007). Others, like Headley, are more typical with 3-4 years in the minors. Others, like PMac, take much longer either due to injury or position changes or struggles in the minors.

Or eating too much
Has Lopez gone yet?
45 min break?
I didn't catch that - really?
Resume at 6:15 I think I heard.
Why do they need a break?

What a punch of pansies.

Padres should call up Headley right now.

Take the focus off their underwhelming draft choices today.

I definitely think we should call up Headley

but I think it’s interesting we’re going after a bunch of offensive guys. It should be interesting to see how the rest of these picks pan out. I wouldn’t necessarily call them underhwhelming, just not what we expected.

Unless, of course, you know oodles of info about each fo these guys :-p

Phantom, I drink vodka and chase frogs in my pool.

I don’t know oodles about anything. ~ Drake Swank

DePo

has more on both guys now. Seems like a good choice?

For those not in the know

Jaff Decker = pick for loss of Brocail
Logan Forsyth = pick for loss of Cameron

I think it's back.
It is, btw.
Keith Law

thinks Dykstra was an “oh shit” pick:

He’s a big, strong first baseman with a chance to hit for power. His approach is pull-oriented; I have to see him use the whole field to believe he’ll hit for average and to really profile offensively at first. He’s no better than average at first base and can’t play third. This was probably a Plan B pick because the player they wanted was Havens.
I'm also pretty sure

they wanted Havens, but I though Hewitt might be the backup plan.

Makes a lot of sense

because I wanted Havens, too, and everyone knows the Padres and I think alike.

I wonder

if they’ve fielded any phonecalls from Sosa or Bonds yet.

Dodgers pick

Lindblom

lol

Dammit

I don’t want guys I root for going to LA.

Yay we are up again.
James Darnell

R/R, 3B, Univ. South Carolina

69th overall?

bow-chicka-bow-wow

In chat at BaseballProspectus

Someone asked Kevin Goldstein who the top 3 hitters left in the 2nd round were and he said:

Only three hitters from my top 50 remain.

Tyler Ladendorf: Juco SS w/ speed
Denis Raben: slugging LF from Miami who had poor junior year
James Darnell: S. Carolina 3B with juice in his bat, but loopy swing, probably a LF in the end

The other two were gone, so I guess we did well here.

Also from BP's Kevin Goldstein
Tom Waits (Ducksnortville, The Intertubes): Is it wrong for me to be more excited about Darnell than the Padres first 3 picks?

Probably—But I do like Darnell and thought he would go higher.

mmmm

someone said sandwich pick

Seems like they were determined to get guys who could smash the ball regardless of where they play and they’ve been consistent. I really do like that.

If nothing else

At least it’s a philosophy.

Walter Sobchak: Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos
Yeah

I think it goes back to the idea that their draft board may have looked significantly different than everyone else’s. I like that they came in with a simple idea and tried to execute it. We need hitters. Let’s draft hitters and worry about everything else later.

I’m good with that.

Into the 3rd round
Chris Carpenter

taken by the Cubs

Padres pick

Blake Tekotte

Another guy who did well in the Cape Cod league
lol

I was once tricked into watching the movie “Summer Catch”

I always laugh about the Cape Cod league now.

That is a great bad movie
Apparently

they want to make sure guys can hit with wood bats. He’s also a CF, which is really nice.

Yep

Sticking to the gameplan apparently.

3rd round complete, comp round up.
Our pick
Sawyer Carroll

RF, Univ. Kentucky (Bat:L, Throw:R)

*cue LOST theme

another big hitter

I’m starting to love this.

Not so loud!

They’re gonna start picking injured pitchers!

comp round over

Round 4 begins

Still thinking about it....

Man, did we miss out on drafting Freddie Prinze, Jr.

Love the Chatham A's

Wasn’t one of the guys we got today a Chatham A?

Dykstra?
think so
I just noticed while typing that

Severe shortage of vowels in that name. Not a good sign, or is it?

Okay I'm pissed

One of my favorite college players, Brandon Crawford, SS, UCLA just went to the Giants. Dammit Dammit Dammit.

We have one more pick?
We havent picked this round yet
USD's Josh Romanski (LHP)

This coverage is horrible

What number are we on?

Who knows what number lol

Guy is going fast, but it’s dull.

SOMEBODY THROW A PIE!

Anyway, that's local...

Oceanside High, to the Cubs.

We're coming up - we're at 135
I just know we're after the Mets

We need to pay them back for screwing us all day.

Mets now - we're next
Jason Kipnis

OF from ASU

Wow am I delayed....
The DraftTracker is much faster than the video
Damn it's like a full pick delay
Kipnis

The MLB scouting report is not kind to this guy:

He may not have enough speed and defensive ability to play center and he may not have enough bat to play a corner.

lol

I see the words “fourth-outfielder type.”

*crosses fingers
“please don’t be the new PMac, please don’t be the new PMac”

It's the fourth round

If there weren’t questions about the guy’s ability to do something-or-other he would have been drafted earlier.

From BP's Bryan Smith
I don’t love what the Padres did earlier, but you have to give them some credit with James Darnell and now, Jason Kipnis from Arizona State. Kipnis is a draft-eligible sophomore so he won’t be the easiest sign, and his body isn’t one the scouts love. But the dude has speed, patience, and some power. You can do a lot worse in this round, trust me.
I think that's gonna be a common reaction

That people won’t like the early picks but they’ll like the middle round picks. But if all of the picks are put in the context of finding hitters, the early picks aren’t that bad.

I'm putting zero stock into any of these decisions

They could all be brilliant, or terrible, I wouldn’t know.

If I remember seeing them four years from now, it will be a miracle anyway.

Yeah, but

The last couple of years they got real excited about some of our picks, and those are still considered good drafts so far (with the exception of Schmidt’s unlucky arm issues). So it’s a little disappointing. I guess though, if you take the best available guys and you don’t absolutely need them at the major league level soon (like we do with Antonelli, Headley, Hunter, etc.) then we have some tradeable prospects if they start panning out, and that helps the major league club. So I’m starting to buy into this draft. I just really want a SS or CF that I can dream about playing in Petco.

Rangers pick

Clark Murphy, OF, Fallbrook HS (5th round)

Twins pick

Nicholas Romero, 3B, San Diego St. (5th round)

Woooooo

San Diego State!
