The draft is going to happen today and the Padres have several picks. I don't claim to follow the draft very closely, but I'm more than willing to hear all about guys you think will be getting firesold away from the Padres in 8 years, so consider this an Open Thread.
Paul DePodesta has a post up about draft strategy and the thought of getting players who will be big leaguers as opposed to "high ceiling" guys. It's essentially one of the Moneyball themes to not become totally enamored with guys that look good in baseball pants and instead look for MLB caliber guys.
At this point, I'll settle for either one. If we're gonna field a sub .400 winning percentage, at least give me some eye candy. ROWR!

Yahoo guy
Just posted this in SLPiH, but the Yahoo guy has us picking a first baseman out of Cal. That doesn’t really make sense in any way, but thanks Yahoo guy.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
thinking 4 years out
Sure. Why not. Light a fire under Adrian’s lazy butt.
Dex - June 5, 2008
Then
that would be lighting a fire under Kyle Blanks’ butt, too, I guess.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Yeah. He needs to get taller to be pro.
friarinchicago - June 5, 2008
Agreed.
They should have him work with CY and Colt in the offseason.
Drama - June 5, 2008
Yahoo guy....
Is that pronounced Yaw-who? Or Yay-who?
Drama - June 5, 2008
First one is Yaw, second one Yaw, third one is Yay.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Thanks for the clarification.
Drama - June 5, 2008
Steve Henson at Yaw-hoo also has this:
Boston Red Sox – Reese Havens, SS (South Carolina): The Red Sox have long coveted the cerebral, mistake-free Havens despite his relatively low ceiling. Havens is the type of player who makes his teammates better, a consistent performer and leader. If he doesn’t make it on the field, he might join Theo Epstein in the front office before he’s 30.
Wow. We can also draft potential GMs??? KT is getting up there in yrs…
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Geoff Young at Ducksnorts
has a nice little breakdown of who he’d like us to pop at 23 and who he thinks we will pop at 23. It’s pretty good reading for anyone unfamiliar with these kinds of propsects.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
Mock Drafts...
This guy says we’re taking Daniel Schlereth. LHP from the University of Arizona.
This guy says we’re taking Shooter Hunt. RHP from Tulane.
This guy says we’re taking Luke Burnett. RHP from Louisiana Tech.
Drama - June 5, 2008
mock drafts are great
When I did my mock draft, I projected us taking Schlereth and then Hunt and Burnett in a groundbreaking “two for one”, so I don’t know what these chumps are talking about.
Dex - June 5, 2008
Schlereth would be such a bad pick here
I just said the same thing over at DS, but people have been in love with him since he was 14 yrs old because his dad is Mark Schlereth. He was absolutely overrated in the state of CO as a high school player because of that fact and he’s way too high on people’s boards right now because of his bloodlines. Taking him would be a mistake.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
More on Schlereth
Baseball America is projecting we’ll take him.
Drama - June 5, 2008
Schlereth
His sister Alexandria would be a nice addition to Petco Park.
Drama - June 5, 2008
Yes on Alex, No on Daniel
I’ll tell you right now – he’ll never throw a pitch at the major league level.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Well, you are the official GLB Scouting Director
Drama - June 5, 2008
Finally
I have a title. And its not profane.

Sports Illustrated

Phantom - June 5, 2008
I really hate these kind of articles
As Dex points out on a near weekly basis, the baseball draft is broken. Every year, every single team passes over a guy who makes it. Criticizing a team for those “mistakes” is just ridiculous. Certainly, when you have a run of guys who haven’t made it, the criticisms become louder, but every team every year passes over a guy who makes it. It’s so dumb.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Hmmmm...
I’ve noticed you’ve been really kissing Dex’s ass quite a bit as of late. You trying to get a raise? A corner office at GLB Headquarters?
Drama - June 5, 2008
he's trying to score a copy of "foreskin gump"
Dex - June 5, 2008
HORRIBLE
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
I already have a corner office
I thought everyone did. You don’t? Oh, awkward…
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
What???
“And I said, I don’t care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Dex that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I’m, I’m quitting, I’m going to quit. And, and I told jbox too, because they’ve moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn’t bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it’s not okay because if they take my stapler then I’ll set the building on fire…”
Drama - June 5, 2008
MLB needs
to institute NFL draft rules, where once you draft a guy, he belongs to you. Period. He can choose not to sign or to go to school, but he ain’t getting money elsewhere.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
yay for the draft!
I bet we draft a left handed middle infielder first.
Dex - June 5, 2008
Is the guy with no arms available?
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Yes.
But I heard it’s going to cost an arm and a leg to sign him.

I say they’ll take Posey, but they should take Alvarez.

Everyone is saying
they’ve committed to Beckham. Posey is reportedly going to fall all the way past the Giants since he’s looking for like $8M +.

They want this to be the NFL Draft so badly.
It’s never going to happen. Ever.
Drama - June 5, 2008
Not ever
They just called Beckham at his house. He had the TV on full blast in the background and everything was echoing and it was impossible to understand everything.

Good. Now we can’t draft him. Take that, Yahoo guy!!!
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
You really hate the idea
of taking a 1B eh? Even if he’s “the best talent available?”
I mean, we would always be able to trade him.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
If we were picking top 5, then I'd say okay
if there was a 1B guy rated in that top 5. But when you get out of the top 5 – maybe top 10 – I just don’t see the logic in drafting for a position that we seem fairly solid at. I know we could always trade him – but I want to see guys come up and play for us, not someone else. Purely a personal preference on my part.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Totally reasonable
I think the Padres have just been blasted lately for not picking the best guy available. Of course, I think many of these people don’t know shit when they complain, so we’ll see what happens.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
Right
I’d also be more comfortable with a hs 1B because he’d take more time to develop and who knows what will happen. But – in theory – a college 1B should be ready to go much quicker.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
I say pick best available
Regardless of position. We’re projecting in most cases at least 3 years away and I’m not gonna say we’re solid at any position in the year 2011. Plus, one of our biggest weaknesses is lack of depth.
Dex - June 5, 2008
The problem with "best available"
is that no one knows who that is after you get out of the top 5, maybe the top 10.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
yeah
but what i’m saying is the padres should pick the guy they think the best guy regardless of position the guy’s listed at. a good number of guys will be converted in some way anyway.
Dex - June 5, 2008
So would you take a 1B over a SS
given that apparently we only play 8 guys out in the field and leave the SS position vacant on our minor league clubs?
And again I mean at the 23rd pick – if we’re at the top of the draft, I 100% agree with you – but to me the further you drop down, you have to pay some attention to position.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
I should add
I’m not being argumentative – I’m just curious as to the thought process.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
my thought process
In the age of free agency, I don’t count on anybody being on the team after this year. Better to load up with the best guy (as projected). My thinking is

friarinchicago - June 5, 2008
That looks
like a pretty mediocre pick to make as your first one. Ofcourse I might be absolutely mistaken because I don’t have any experience with the concept of a Draft. We don’t have something similar in European Sports
sixpakfrombelgium - June 5, 2008
Well, without Weeks I was set to be a little disappointed no matter what.
friarinchicago - June 5, 2008
Well that was a big letdown
I’m gonna check and see who made the All-CIF teams three and four yrs ago to figure out who we’ll pick later on.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Ducksnorts
does not approve of this pick, at all. Dykstra is a Boras client, too.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
even better
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
That really irritates me
So much has been made of avoiding Boras guys when we pick at the top, but it’s okay to deal with him later in the round? Makes no sense.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
They should've let Geoff represent the Padres.
friarinchicago - June 5, 2008
Well, this is encouraging
Phantom - June 5, 2008
Who wrote that?
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Paul DePodesta
osbug - June 5, 2008
Yeah
They do a lot more research into this stuff than I do. I won’t even try and second guess DePodesta and crew when it comes to the draft.
osbug - June 5, 2008
Well sure
But I’d expect them to focus on all the guy’s positives. The problem for me is that this guy probably would’ve been there at their next pick.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
True
But that is a lot of good points.
osbug - June 5, 2008
It's not need based...
Then why did we reach for the guy. Most had him going in the supp round. I even saw someone say he would got in the 3rd or 4th. Why do we want a power hitting DH?
Wonko - June 5, 2008
Oh and by the way
Dykstra went to the same high school as me and is not related to Lenny. Lenny’s son Cutter is draft eligible though.
Wonko - June 5, 2008
I don't think anyone here
can answer that, but I bet if you keep an eye on DePo’s blog he will let you know.
osbug - June 5, 2008
Boras
thinks Dykstra is special. This could potentially be a real good sign.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
for Dykstra maybe

what they’ll do with their supp picks now.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
It's impossible to figure out
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Yeah
DS is very much not pleased at all – they feel that Dykstra would have been available.
Cole allegedly wants a ton of cash.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
Cole
That’s fine – avoid him – I have zero problem with that. But why do you take a guy that by most accounts was going to be there 20 spots later?
Just baffles me.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Well
A lot of guys have been popped much earlier than anyone thought they would. I’m not sure if the Padres were just unprepared for these contingencies, or if they legitimately felt that Dykstra was a special talent.
If DePo supports this, should we?
Phantom - June 5, 2008
It's hard to say (for me)
The weird thing is that the first 22 picks, with maybe one or two exceptions, were pretty much guys projected to go in the first 22 picks. Then this comes out of nowhere. I really appreciate what DePo has to say about the guy, but it really makes me wonder what their board looked like. What I’d really like – and hope we get to some degree – is why they felt the need to grab him at 23.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Yeah
I think maybe the fact that he already has wood bat experience, and power that probably won’t be affected by Petco park played into it. I am looking forward to hearing what he has to say.
osbug - June 5, 2008
Me too
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
He had
his blog post up moments after he was picked, so he must have been ready for it. I guess just because people project that he will go later doesn’t mean he would. Maybe there are some other teams right now kicking themselves because they didn’t expect the Padres to take him so early.
osbug - June 5, 2008
Right
And I’m pretty sure we’ll hear some version of that. The problem is knowing how much truth there is in that.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
I don't know
about that. A bunch of guys popped releivers way earlier than anyone thought. Shooter is still on the board, as is Collier.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
Sure
but by and large, most of the guys picked were tagged as first round guys. You can even look at the picks after the Pads. There were really only maybe three, four at the most, who came out of nowhere.
Again – I think an explanation as to why he was the right guy at 23 would be helpful.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
A "Fuson" guy
I saw someone refer to Dykstra as this. I think Dykstra was higher on their draft board because they prefer his skill set (Patience and Power) moreso than other teams. This fits in with picks Fuson has made in the past (like Headley). I would rather have taken Hewitt or one of the falling pitchers (Freidrich) as long as we’re not drafting for organizational need.
Wonko - June 5, 2008
I'm hoping we draft another first baseman
just to completely blow WG’s mind.
Dex - June 5, 2008
LOL
I would literally explode.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
I imagine
they’ll go with a HS pitcher here soon.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
Well, look.
Tony Clark can’t be our backup 1B forever.
Axion - June 5, 2008
Dykstra is described more as a DH than a 1B.
So in that sense we have yet to draft a 1B.
Wonko - June 5, 2008
OMG, I just figured it out
We are getting sent to the AL West!

Axion - June 5, 2008
At least we wouldn't have to deal with dodger fans anymore.
Wonko - June 5, 2008
A fifteen minute break? For what???
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Red Sox get Kelly
I know the Pads couldn’t risk taking a guy who has signed to play fball, but if he chooses baseball, we’re gonna hate that we missed on him.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
That's a massive 'if'
I don’t think the Padres can afford to gamble that much.
Axion - June 5, 2008
Oh I totally agree
They couldn’t have taken him. But he’ll be one of those guys that people curse about, not recalling the extenuating circumstances.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
Man
I am getting absolutely nothing done at work today. Stupid draft.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
LOL
Seriously. This is so bad. And for what really?
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
I think the draft
is for us fans who care way too much about the team. It lets us get incredibly indignant about things we truly know so little about.

"Comparisons to Matt Stairs"
Signed with ASU.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
MLB.com has this to say
While most people were looking at Decker as a hitter, there probably are still some who might consider him on the mound. He can throw upwards of 93 mph with a decent curve, and that arm strength serves him well in the outfield. He’s got a pretty good approach as a hitter and has the chance to hit for pretty good power, looking like a Matt Stairs-like right fielder in the future
Phantom - June 5, 2008
Trust me
Padres don’t consider him a pitcher. It makes no sense to convert a good high school hitter to the mound. You can always convert them later if need be and you end up saving wear and tear on their arm.

More average than power, not especialy toolsy, polished approach, a VERY VERY San Diego pick

This is ridculous
A stress fracture in his foot has slowed Forsythe this season and he may end up as one of the steals of the draft. He has good line-drive power and could develop more home run power as he matures. Forsythe has been likened to Mike Lowell by Baseball America. He is a good athlete and has an above-average arm, so he could also play at second base or in the outfield. (Posted by Marc Hulet and Rich)
Wonko - June 5, 2008
That actually sounds quite good.
Hope he can come through at another position than 3B though
sixpakfrombelgium - June 5, 2008
We'll see where we are
in 3 years. No use moving him yet.
Wonko - June 5, 2008
I see
really have little experience with this Draft thing so I don’t really have a clue about the potential impact of these picks.
sixpakfrombelgium - June 5, 2008
3 years is a good rule of thumb for high draft picks
Some guys move faster, but they have to really dominate in the minor leagues o do that (Troy Tulowitzki is an example, drafted in 2005 debuted in 2007). Others, like Headley, are more typical with 3-4 years in the minors. Others, like PMac, take much longer either due to injury or position changes or struggles in the minors.
Wonko - June 5, 2008

What a punch of pansies.
Phantom - June 5, 2008
Padres should call up Headley right now.
Take the focus off their underwhelming draft choices today.
Drama - June 5, 2008
I definitely think we should call up Headley
but I think it’s interesting we’re going after a bunch of offensive guys. It should be interesting to see how the rest of these picks pan out. I wouldn’t necessarily call them underhwhelming, just not what we expected.
Unless, of course, you know oodles of info about each fo these guys :-p

Axion - June 5, 2008
Consistent
Seems like they were determined to get guys who could smash the ball regardless of where they play and they’ve been consistent. I really do like that.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
If nothing else
At least it’s a philosophy.
Wonko - June 5, 2008
Yeah
I think it goes back to the idea that their draft board may have looked significantly different than everyone else’s. I like that they came in with a simple idea and tried to execute it. We need hitters. Let’s draft hitters and worry about everything else later.
I’m good with that.

He may not have enough speed and defensive ability to play center and he may not have enough bat to play a corner.

Wonko - June 5, 2008
From BP's Bryan Smith
Wonko - June 5, 2008
I think that's gonna be a common reaction
That people won’t like the early picks but they’ll like the middle round picks. But if all of the picks are put in the context of finding hitters, the early picks aren’t that bad.
Winfield's Ghost - June 5, 2008
I'm putting zero stock into any of these decisions
They could all be brilliant, or terrible, I wouldn’t know.
If I remember seeing them four years from now, it will be a miracle anyway.
Axion - June 5, 2008
Yeah, but
The last couple of years they got real excited about some of our picks, and those are still considered good drafts so far (with the exception of Schmidt’s unlucky arm issues). So it’s a little disappointing. I guess though, if you take the best available guys and you don’t absolutely need them at the major league level soon (like we do with Antonelli, Headley, Hunter, etc.) then we have some tradeable prospects if they start panning out, and that helps the major league club. So I’m starting to buy into this draft. I just really want a SS or CF that I can dream about playing in Petco.
