It's not always bad to be in last place. Here's some things we can focus on: One, we tried hard. And two, we're still dear friends! -- Glenn, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
The Padres are in last place again and on pace to lose 101 games this season. The last time we lost 101 games was when Jim Riggleman's Padres did it in 1993. We probably won't have to worry about being quite that bad because Buddy was ejected from the game yesterday. Everybody knows that a meaningless act like that some how motivates pro athletes and that will probably ignite a flame underneath the team. That will be good for about 2 more wins this season. With 2 more wins we won't have that embarrassing 3 digit losing record. Winning isn't everything though.
Yesterday Greg Maddux spoke about the game:
"You don't have to win to enjoy the game," he said. "It definitely helps. I'm not saying it doesn't help. It's more fun to win, but it's still fun playing."
He could just as easily been speaking to the fans. Your team doesn't have to win to enjoy the game. It helps sure, but it can still be fun! Anybody buying this?

Oh I forgot what the point of this post was and I just remembered. So if the Padres are going to be bad this year, I'm kinda hoping that they are terribly bad. Might as well go out in a blaze of glory like Jon Bon Jovi, right? Then it would be almost impossible for the fat cats in the front office to spin the record into something positive. They'd be forced to make some serious changes and quit with all the "turning the corner" talk. Nobody wants this to be a rebuilding year, but if we are going to be losing 100 games then let's go ahead and rebuild.

Greg Maddux is right.
As long as everyone stays safe and has a good time, this season will be a success.

I agree

I agree too. In fact, I refuse to vote on account of what Khalil has taught us...
When our desires and our wants cause us suffering, then we should stop. There are needs that are essential and fundamental, and these can be obtained. These needs are what we should work towards. Desires beyond these should be gradually lessened.
After all, what is the purpose of baseball? To get? Or to be content and happy?

I don't want 100 losses.
But rebuild if your best “try” is going to lose 100 anyway.

eh
Padres don’t pick until 23, 40, and 46. Hard to get too excited about that.
Wonko - May 5, 2008
I'm referring to post-95+ losses

This is all premature
We know the Padres. The 9th inning rally is their specialty. But now it’s like the whole season is one game and the 9th inning is going to be August-September. We’re going to be like last season’s Rockies only instead of God on our side, we have Hell’s Bells (Trevor is going to shake this off). We’re riding it all to hell and I, for one, am readying my handbasket with a soft serve machine and a stack of mini-helmets.
