Gaslamp Ball

The Good News

Let's look at the positives so far:.

  • We've had absolutely excellent starting pitching so far.
  • We've seen incredible defense from Brian Giles, Tad Iguchi, Adrian Gonzalez and Kooz.
  • Bard threw out a base runner
  • Trevor isn't the only guy who can't protect a tie ball game.
  • Peavy is pitching on Friday and maybe more importantly he's hitting as well.

What else?

How the hell

is #4 a positive?

Not really positive I guess

At least Hoffman isn't taking all the abuse.

genetic cloning is advancing...?

so maybe we can clone Peavy and in some odd years have a superior pitching staff...

You know what's sad

If Peavy had pitched today and had the same line as Saturday, we still would have lost.

Oh wait

But he'd be hitting. Okay. I feel better.

We don't have to play by the SF bay for a while

Man it looked cold and hard to judge the ball.

Sooooooooo

we suck worse than the Giants?

Starting Pitching

Well, the Padres starting pitchers are collectively 5-0 in the W-L record. Seriously, our 5 pitcher is BAD ASS.

No question we've had the best rotation in baseball for the first 10 days of the season. So the bullpen has been our weakness, but seriously, look at the stats over the years. Our bullpen (even without Brocail) is still one of the best. They'll get it all sorted out when it's said and done.

Shameless Plug:

Be on the lookout for my Yokohama BayStars diary from here in Japan in the next day or two

You're in JAPAN?!?!?

That's so cool. I'm seriously jealous.

We don't live in L.A.

My apologies to the handful of Gaslamp Ballers who do.

we can finally retire the unicorn?

Whoa. Hey. Let's not get hasty...

"...an irrational tendency to overreact to circumstances is their El Guapo."

Just sayin'.

I've been trying to kill that unicorn for a while

People just keep beating the dead magical horse.

You can't kill unicorns, silly.

Actually, that's not true.

It's difficult...but it's possible. Good luck in your quest, Dex.

Let's all play "Where's Dex?"

That's way too easy, Dalton.

He wears those red pants with that yellow top like all the time.

That's to ward off spells.

Useful Hints

The maiden must be a virgin. If not, the unicorn may impale her.

2008...

...is the final year of Jim Edmonds contract?

I'm with Demoira

Edmonds is killing me lately. I rather go back to having Hairston in center. Heck, give me Venable in center. He had a pretty awesome spring and plays good defense. Looks like he is batting .318 in Portland right now.

He signed a 2 year 19 million contract in November of 2006

rhetorical

Umm.. mine was a rhetorical answer

Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket.

the chargers are good

(just kidding...i'm not giving up yet)

LT needs to become the Bo Jackson of this generation.

Plenty of other positives

Only twenty more days until May.
There are 152 games left in the season.
Jake is kind of angry.
We should be seeing Headley any day now.
Edmonds probably has one more week before he takes an extended trip to the DL.
Sledge is in Japan.

Everyone take a deep breath. We knew we weren't going to be an offensive juggernaut and that games like this were gonna happen. The bullpen is still working out the kinks - we were spoiled last yr by an incredible start from them. If the starting pitching continues on the same track, the team will be fine.

lol

I woke up this morning still pissed about last night - especially because it was a very rare night when my internet connection sucked worse than the Padres and I was unable to vent in here! Then I thought..............

How many more days until May?

:-)

The Rev

has not gone to Japan for Sledge, has he?

Out on Edmonds

I have only been listening to the games on the radio this week, but it sounded terrible last night and I don't like having the keep PMac on the bench when he was swinging a hot bat. No science here, but as soon as PMac was out of the lineup, seems like the runs dried up. (course Khalil and Kooz slowed down, too.)

I had faith for some late career magic for Edmonds, hopefully he goes on a tear. Remember Jimmy, homeruns cure all ills, ok?

Great point, Winfield. I remember May(s).

Pitching, etc.

In the long run we will be fine. I currently live in Brevard County (after 38 years in SD) and I have seen up close and personal all the pitchers we got for Linebrink, and they are all good, especially Inman. That trade could go down as possibly one of the most one-sided in Padres history.
I also think the last few games also show exactly how good Mike Cameron was for the Padres. So maybe we end up with Headley in left and Hairston in center. I prefer that to the center fielder formerly known as Jim Edmonds. Hopefully his bat will heat up, but he just isn't close to what he used to be in the field, and Petco will magnify that. Also, wearing a jacket under your uni? How can you play like that?
Tadahito has been a great pickup, but I wish we still had Blummer as a super-utility, spark off the bench type guy. I am also a big fan of Tony Clark, but I don't see how he will get enough at-bats and/or playing time to stay locked-in. It's nice to have a "professional hitter" in the lineup though.
I guess what it comes down to for me is that the net result is this years team is not quite as good overall as last years. Of course, Edmonds could go on a tear, and Pryor could come back and be lights-out, so what do I know.

Good News #6

We are in second place.

Excellent pt

Funny how we've all managed to overlook this:)

Immaterial!

The sky is falling! Don't you understand?!? The SKY is FALLING!!!

That and a dollar with get you a coffee at McDonalds

but you can already get a coffee at mcdonalds for a buck

adding other stuff is worthless...

oh wait.. i got it.

Dear Nattering Nabobs of Negativism,

Getting our hearts ripped out by Big Head Boche and Giants gets me down too, but snap out of it.

This is a good team. Give it some time. Our hitting has improved, just not "timely" hitting. Edmonds has been out for 6 weeks, so give him a break. He's only hit in every game he's been in so far. Bardo threw somebody out and we've picked off two at first, so the tide will turn on the San Diego automatic double.

Our starting pitching is unbelievable. Our relievers have faltered, but mostly due to lack of offensive support. Iggy has been great at 2nd and will get better. KG, Kouz and AG are all starting off strong, unlike last year.

Our bench is strong. Huber, Clark, Crabbe and Pmac (all hitting over .300). Sure beats Blummer, Todd Walker, Rod Macsomething, Cheo... Hairston will catch fire again (remember Sledge?).

At some point, this team will gel (May) and life will be good. Until then, stock up on the anti-depressants.

I only give breaks

to unproven rookie third-basemen who hit .175 for the entire month of April and appear to be the worst black hole ever seen in the 6-7-or-8 spot in the lineup. Edmonds is none of those things.

Good team vs. bad luck

I'm not down on the Padres because I think they are bad. I'm down because they will face stiff competition where each game counts, and we have already dropped a few games that we will regret losing later on.

Losing 2 out of 3 to one of your rivals

at their home park is part of the game. Even if they suck.

I'm as much of a realist as anyone

But this is not the season for giving away games. It's one for rally unicorns and shalalees if we want to win this division.

We're still

waaaay better than the tigers who everyone at the WWL picked to win the world series. They have ISSUES, but like us, they will work out of them too...it's a long season....we just all have to get on the same bus and we'll be fine.
