Adrian Gonzalez knows Crash Davis

I like Adrian Gonzalez. Just wanted to say that. I just kinda wonder why anyone would have him write this article considering the fact that it's so.... fluffy. Let's say you were going to outline the "safe" things to say about the Padres. Come up with an outline:

  • Our pitching's really good
  • It's not about me, it's the team
  • We're still confident
  • Up and down. One day at a time
  • Our competition is good

And then what? Don't get me wrong. I'm glad he's giving us the "right" Bull Durham answers as opposed to the "wrong" answers. I just kinda want to grab Adrian and be like, "Dude... We've all seen Bull Durham."

I bet the guys are so tired from last night's game that there will be a "rain out" for tonight's game. Some group of ragamuffins will sneak into Chase and break the sprinklers. The ringleader of that group will be Adrian Gonzalez, because this article proves he's seen Bull Durham.

Adrian

might be the most boring person on the planet. Except he plays Major League Baseball.

Let's play a game: Spot the Euphemism!

“timely hitting” = not enough hitting

“We’re confident that, in the long run, our pitching will be the difference.” = We have all our stock invested in pitching.

“I don’t think a guy would be happy if he won an MVP award and his team didn’t make the playoffs.” = We don’t have an MVP.

“I have had some great hitting coaches along the way, too, and I’ve listened to their advice.” = They should not have fired Merv.

There, I spiced it up a bit. :-)

I like your first one

“Timely hitting” is the biggest crock of s**t I’ve ever heard. Any guy who only hits his best when it’s “timely” is dogging it. These guys get paid millions, there’s no excuse for trying harder only when the situation calls for it. Try your hardest all the time or don’t play in the bigs. So basically, if you assume than no player is a big enough jerk to always dog it unless the situation warrants trying harder, then not getting “timely hitting” either means not getting lucky or not hitting well enough.

I agree

And I know some Gaslamp Ballers will think I’m picking on them, but seriously, if you could give advice to the Padres hitters right now, would it really be, “You need to start getting some timely hits.” I’m pretty sure the answer would be, “Yeah. Tell me something I don’t f—king know.”

If a batter let’s strike one go by without a swing, they aren’t being aggressive. If they swing at the first pitch for a strike, they aren’t being patient. It’s almost the definition of 20/20 hindsight.

Gasp!

Are you guys saying there is no such thing as a clutch hitter?

timely hits

i’m saying that ain’t nobody got themselves a job coaching baseball by telling their players that they had to start being more “timely”.

I prefer that

to some of the crap that comes out of Peavy’s mouth.
