The Padres cannot afford to get a bad deal for Peavy. Adrian Gonzalez and Peavy are the only Padres that have any value.
Peavy's no trade clause and Moores' order to reduce payroll to $40 million has left the Padres with absolutely no leverage in a trade. By trading Khalil the Padres can start the season with Peavy and then hope to trade him to a contending club in desperate need of an ace before the trade deadline.
It's better that the Padres buy some time and get rid of Khalil so they can make a suitable trade for Peavy, but make no mistake they will trade Peavy. Don't think for a second that by trading Khalil that Peavy will remain a Padre through 2009.
Sure they sold low on Khalil but it's better than selling low on Peavy. I believe the Padres did the right thing.
Khalil needs a change of scenery and he desperately needs to hit in a smaller park in front of a fan base that hasn't soured on him. Hell, even our front office soured on him.
I know I certainly need a change. I can't watch him anymore, it's too frustrating. Khalil has done what he has always done, but once where it was charming and new, it's become old and tiresome. I say, "out with the old and in with the new". We'll be fine without his glove, I'm convinced of that.
It's funny reading around the St. Louis blogs and seeing comments about their fans saying "Hey he looks like Spicoli" and just when it was dying out in San Diego, Khalil has to deal with it all over again. It makes me laugh.

I kind of agree
What I wanted most is for maximum return for his value, whatever form that may take.
I’ll tell you what’s really going to piss me off, is when the Padres play the Cardinals, and we try throwing him sliders away, and he hits them for some reason. Then I’m gonna go apeshit-rage crazy and punch two storage lockers.

if anyone can teach khalil to hit, it's dave duncan
they say he’s a genius.

So Khalil's going Matt Bush?

Kind of like
Justin Peele catching passing versus the Chargers when he caught like 1 out of every 3 when he was here.
I die a little inside when stuff like that happens.

It will be the same as it was with Edmonds
We’ll be all like, “This is perfect, we’ll just throw some prunes and cold-milled flax on the basepaths and his old ass won’t be able to resist!” and all of a sudden, he’s the fountain of youth.

This is about Phantom, isn't it?
TheThirdGonzalez - December 5, 2008
Agreed
I think there is some small chance we keep Peavy though if we cut some more payroll somewhere and are competitive at the deadline. Maybe like “99 to 1”

Giles
is NEXT!

I'm not completely sold on the Khalil deal
Until they find someone else to play SS. Because we’ve got nothing. LRod and Kazmar were terrible out there last year.
But I do like the deal for all the reasons Jbox stated.
Wonko - December 5, 2008
LRod was terrible?
I thought he played well. Hit for a pretty decent average, his defense was good and he had a bit of speed.
jbox - December 5, 2008
His fielding was OK
but they guy wore out Adrian on his throws. He was all over the place.
But we’re in for a really rough year if L-Rod is our starting SS.
Phantom - December 5, 2008
Its not like he was a rookie
There is 4 years of major league data to look back on. He had a batting average spike at age 28, that’s nice and all, but it’s a little scary to rely on that. His little bit of speed doesn’t seem to translate to stolen bases or baserunning so it’s nice in a cute way, but not in a useful way.
I was actually referring to their defense where LRod showed very little range and didn’t look comfortable turning the double play from the SS side.
I think if his defense was top 10 in the league then I could live with the bat to a certain extent. If his defense was top 25 and he could steal bases, that would also be swell. But he’s probably more like top 50 and can’t steal and may or may not be able to hit for average with 0 power. I don’t think of that as a solution. I think of it as settling (and KT’s quotes seem to agree).
Wonko - December 5, 2008
LRod wasn’t as terrible at the plate as Khalil was.
Richard Wade - December 8, 2008
But, let's be clear
He still was terrible.
Wonko - December 8, 2008
Well, I think that’s rather obvious.
Richard Wade - December 10, 2008
I'm going to do my best
to make sure STL calls him Khalil-Bot
thenerdhater - December 5, 2008
I've heard that
the group to chose the PTBNL from is comprised of players that are of greater talent than Worrell.
Sam (sdsuaztec4) - December 5, 2008
It better be.
I know he has great stats in the minors and I think its funny watching guys with funky deliveries, but when has it ever worked long-term? Take a look at him:
