Jake Peavy to be traded to Atlanta for the Snorks?

It looks like it's almost close. It's coming through the wire via Met's Today that the Atlanta offer looks good and the Padres want Jake Peavy to seal the deal.

Answer by Friday?

The Braves have been pressuring the Padres for an answer by Friday, when the free agent market opens, because they need at least two starters -- and they want to know whether Peavy will be a Brave before they dive in. They are expected to pursue A.J. Burnett, Ryan Dempster and others -- and sign maybe one if they acquire Peavy, and two if they don't.

It looks like quite a package on paper:

Under terms of the deal discussed by the Braves and Padres, San Diego would receive shortstop Yunel Escobar, Class A outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, one of two starting pitchers -- Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes -- and either reliever Blaine Boyer or one of two minor-league left-handers (one of which is believed to be Jeff Locke).

And by "quite a package" I mean "a bunch of guys who haven't won a Cy Young Award who's collective names remind me of the Snorks". Still, I welcome the chance to greet Yunel, Gorkys, Blaine, Jo-Jo and Charlie. I'm sure their delightful undersea adventures will entertain us all to no extent next season.

I can honestly say

if we got The Snorks in exchange for Peavy, I’d be pretty excited.

imagine the t-shirts!
Must resist

The temptation to post this URL

Well crap.

At this point, I’m just waiting for this whole thing to end. Some Padres fans don’t want to lose Peavy, some Braves fans don’t want to lose Escobar. Peavy might have arm troubles, and much like Tim Hudson and Mike Hampton, might choose Atlanta to have a severe (TJ) injury. Escobar might not adapt well to a trade, when all he ever wanted as a little kid in Cuba was to play for the Braves. Who knows. It’s a crap shoot in the end.

I’m not going to lie and say the Padres are getting an equal return here, if this happens. I’d try and reason and say try not to resent these guys because they’re what caused the loss of Jake Peavy, but I can’t control the emotions of others. But I can assure that a lot of people will really grow to enjoy Escobar if he plays with the same heart he played with in Atlanta.

Overall, the longer this goes on, the less I begin to care. Whether I get to see Peavy pitch, or Escobar flip his bat, it’s not going to affect how many games I go to, and how many games I tune into on television.

This seems like a reasonable package to me

And I think Reyes is the sleeper of this deal. A move to Petco and to Ballsley could help him out quite a bit.

So if we get Escobar, who gets Khalil? Or do the Padres convert Escobar to 2B for the year?

I think it’s a lot better than people realize, but I was being sympathetic to those who didn’t.

Reyes is still only 23, with two seasons of part-time ML work under his belt. So there is much room for improvement. But what he’s shown thus far, is the negatives that I’ve shared already, mostly speaking from the perspective of jaded Braves fan who grew tired of his failure to tap into his potential.

I don’t know what’s going to happen to Khalil though – the Braves will likely promote Brent Lillibridge internally as opposed to taking on Khalil’s salary. My suggestion was to shop him to the Red Socks, whom despite Jed Lowrie’s decent output, would probably have a hard-on for Khalil’s RH bat paired with the Green Monster.

KG

will hit about 30 Homers and 40 Doubles in Fenway…and still have an OBP less than 300

Yeah

If Khalil ends up with one of:

a) the Red Sox
b) the Cubs
c) the Reds

he will probably end up as an All-Star. Especially in Boston, where they will cream themselves over his defense. That, and he’ll wear out the Monster.

Mark my words. If he lands in a bigger market, he’ll be an All-Star this year or next year.

can't wait

for the PTI debate on him being overrated.

If you listen to my arch-nemesis Scott Miller

The Padres prefer Morton and Boyer over JoJo and Locke.

So the Snorks would be Yunel, Gorkys, Charlie and Blaine.

hmmmm...

Well that would get rid of the only guy actually named after a Snork.

Why do you hate Gaslamp Ball?

It's not my fault

Blame Scott Miller. I know I always do.

hey

don’t you owe me some beer?

sh*t

Was hoping people forgot. Hasn’t happened yet!

SammyG never forgets beer. Ever.
Bummer...

I was hoping that the Padres would get Schafer and Locke instead of a CF with no power and will not see Petco for another 2 years and a relief pitcher who walks 3.5 guys per nine…

I have never really seen escobar play (well I guess I have but he did not jump out at me when the Pads played the Braves this year)….how does he compare to Khalil defensively?

Escobar

I think overall he is superior offensively than Khalil. You lose some power but the OBP goes WAY up. Defensively, I think the range is about the same, but Khalil is a little more consistent but that could just b/c of experience and not skill

Escobar has one of the best shortstop arms in baseball. The other, I would say is Troy Tulowitzki. Absolute rocket cannon. He may not have impressed you in their early season matchup in Atlanta, but he’s got great range, reflexes and instincts to pair with his arm. And he played probably 70% of the season hurt with a balky shoulder (Prince Fielder sat on him… literally), and if you remember, sat out in the Braves/Padres series at PETCO.

All that considered, still put up a +21 on John Dewar’s +/- scale, and would have likely won the Gold Glove if not for him sitting out most of September, and giving Rollins a chance to overtake him in another Phillies late-season push.

from what I’ve seen of Escobar, he has a really funky batting stance.

Peavy will be traded

for Russell Branyon, Ryan Klesko and the ashes of Caminetti

that's like trading him for the munsters

I’d rather have the snorks.
