Harvard Marine trying to catch-up in the court of public opinion
Here's a list of the valid reasons why one might withdraw a contract offer:
Withdrawing a $4 million contract offer for Hoffman's 2009 services is a defensible decision when you consider: A) it had been on the table long enough to attract termites; B) Hoffman had neither consented to the proposal nor countered it; C) letting it sit creates a “contingent liability” (Alderson's term) in a marketplace too fluid to let offers stand indefinitely; and D) rescinding the offer now does not preclude a deal getting done later.
Here's the reason that seems to have led to the decision:
“I thought there was a general understanding that we were going to deal with this on a confidential basis,” Alderson said during an appearance Tuesday night on XX Sports radio. “Trevor goes on a trip and his agent starts popping off.”
Why would it be so hard to tell Hoffman that they are going to withdraw the contract re-issue an identical new one with an expiration date, to protect the team and then try to set up a few meetings in the meantime?

Boggs' call to AG was funny/sad
Winfield's Ghost - November 12, 2008
I know
Adrian probably start packing his things, really quietly so that he wouldn’t bother anyone.

Sandy Corleone
My final offer is this: nothing.
Dalton - November 12, 2008
Can everyone apologize to Sandy now?
They send Trev an offer. He refuses to respond and instead requests a meeting with Sandy, KT, and Moores. The Padres respond that they would be happy to have a meeting with Sandy and KT since Moores has his own problems to deal with. Trev again refuses to respond and his agent starts running his mouth to the media and to the fans, meanwhile Trevor is sipping on mojitos watching sportscenter learning how the fans are ready to kill Sandy and KT.
Trevor needs to fire his agent ASAP, come home, and get a deal done or else Trev is gonna be in an Indians uniform this weekend.

I'm sorry you have a crush on Sandy
Sandy is going to read your little love notes you’ve been posting the past few days and respond “Young man, may I ask what your name is?”
jbox - November 12, 2008
That works for me
Sam (sdsuaztec4) - November 12, 2008
Again
Whereas you were cautioning everyone to be suspect of what Trevor’s people were putting out there, I would urge you do the same with Alderson.
Like I said yesterday, they’re both at fault in this situation. I’m sure that both sides are now spinning this situation to try to come out ahead. Regardless, perception is the problem here. And the FO hasn’t done anything so far to mitigate the image this is putting out there.
Phantom - November 12, 2008
Again, I agree that both sides are at fault
But not evenly at fault. I’d say,
75% Rick Thurman
20% Sandy Alderson
5% Trevor Hoffman
Sam (sdsuaztec4) - November 12, 2008
Why exactly are the Padres so mad that Trevor's agent spoke out? I know that Sandy said that he thought Trevor wanted it to be kept quiet.
Why should the details about Trevor’s negotiations be kept quiet while the team has been speaking about practically every detail of Jake’s trade. I get that Jake and Trevor are two entirely different people in two entirely different situations but why is Sandy Alderson so pissy about Trevor’s agent?
TheVinylCrocodile - November 12, 2008
Have you noticed the last 300 comments on this blog?
The majority of them criticize the organization for how they are handling things. Even of the notion of Trevor leaving makes the Padres look bad. They’d want everything kept quiet to avoid all of that.
Wonko - November 12, 2008
Yeah but that obviously hasn't happened.
I guess I’m confused with how Kevin Towers has been so open with the media about their plans for Jake but so sensitve about the details with Trevor. But what is the difference between Trevor’s agent saying what he did and Jake and his agent saying what they did? I didn’t even think that what Trevor’s agent said was warrant for “popping off.”
TheVinylCrocodile - November 12, 2008
The difference is
They asked the agent and Trevor to keep it quiet so that it wouldn’t blow up in the media. Whereas with Jake I think they wanted a feeding frenzy where teams weren’t sure how many suitors there were. So they were happy to let the media know and then the media types could make everyone think that all the big money teams were involved.
Wonko - November 12, 2008
Ah.
TheVinylCrocodile - November 12, 2008
The Padres notified Trevor's agent they were withdrawing the offer in a FAX!
Alderson doesn’t seem to know how to tell the truth.
Trevor DID respond to the contract offer. He asked to meet with the FO and Moores. That IS a response. And a reasonable response from the face of the franchise. The guy that has put more fannies in the seats than any other Padres player over the past 6 years deserves at least the chance to talk about his role going forward.
The FO responded by FAXING a offer withdrawal. NOT a phone call, a fax.
Talk about insulting! If I pulled that crap in my business I would not have any good employees or contractors.
Interview after interview Alderson is caught in lies and some people still want to kiss his behind.
Why?
Jbox, are you sure SDSU is not Sandy Alderson? He seems to be the only person kissing Alderson’s behind and everyone else is saying Alderson is at fault.
A coincidence? A mighty suspicious one.
websoulsurfer - November 12, 2008
I think Richard may need
to rethink the comment he made yesterday.
Phantom - November 12, 2008
Yah I wasn't even going to respond
You know, it’s a shame that this didn’t work out well.
Sam (sdsuaztec4) - November 12, 2008
No kidding
I should have waited.
Richard Wade - November 12, 2008
Fax you, Trevor!
Fax you.
Wonko - November 12, 2008
"Fannies in the seats" and "kissing Alderson's behind" make me giggle.
When did my grandmother get a GLB account?
TheThirdGonzalez - November 12, 2008
did a little investigative reporting on this websoulsurfer character
it turns out he has a recent history of kissing Alderson’s behind as well. From the Talking Chop:
How do we know he isn’t Sandy, and that he accused our dear friend ’Tec to confuse us??
the burden of proof is on you now,
Sandywebsoulsurfer.'Eaters - November 12, 2008
That is spectacular.
I’m picturing you wearing a fedora with a tumbler of bourbon in one hand and a mouse in the other.
TheThirdGonzalez - November 12, 2008
Many of us have defended Sandy over the years
his actions over the last few months are inexcusable though
wrveres - November 12, 2008
Inexcusable?
There is one good excuse and it starts with a “W” and rhymes with Murld Leeries Flampions.
Wonko - November 13, 2008
really?
you see where he is getting ready to take .50cents on the dollar for Jake? That rumored offer from Atlanta for Jake is quantity over quality.
Suing the SS.
Offering Trevor a 50% pay cut, demanding his agent not bitch about it, then jerking the offer off the table, without any fore warning.
Never mind Trevor was working in Puerto Rico, and Sandy knew this.
inexcusable.
wrveres - November 13, 2008
So if the Padres are champions under Sandy
You will be the guy standing there going, “F you Sandy! What you did was inexcusable!”?
Wonko - November 13, 2008
The 2009 Padres: Murld Leeries Flampions!!!
Winfield's Ghost - November 13, 2008
I kinda like
how that sounds to be honest with you
