PADRES: Hoffman files for free agency
On Wednesday, general manager Kevin Towers said he didn't expect a quick resolution to Hoffman's contract status or that of outfielder Brian Giles, who is waiting on the club to decide whether or not to pick up his $9 million option.
What the hell is going on here? I guess he didn't like that contract that he's been mulling over for the last 2 weeks. From what the Padres Front Office has been saying in interviews, they haven't even talked to him since the contract was offered. Yesterday we heard Alderson say Towers was going to contact Hoffman in the next several days.
MLB: October 14th
Hoffman, who turned 41 on Monday, is eligible to file for free agency at the end of the World Series, though the Padres would just as soon that didn't happen.
Towers would just as soon get Hoffman's contract resolved as it figures to be a busy offseason for the Padres.
SignOnSanDiego: October 16
On the final day of the season, Hoffman said he wants to pitch for the Padres in 2009 and beyond and realizes his negotiating leverage isn't ideal.
"I don't want to go anywhere else," said Hoffman, whose save conversion rate this year was tied for second in the NL. "It would put a big strain on my family, and the grass isn't always greener someplace else."

Hopefully he is just making a statement...
But I guess after all the talk about Peavy, I’m starting to accept that we could lose everyone. Granted Hoffman would be a much bigger deal than Peavy on the sentimental side, but I guess I’m immune now.
Just get rid of Peavy, Gonzo, Hoffman, Greene, Giles, Young, and Darren Balsley,
I’m READY!
BRING IT ON MOOORES! You think that will stop me? Just wait, I’ll buy a 5 year season ticket plan behind home plate just to BLOW YOUR MIND!
KEEP THE PHAITH!

what a joke
This team has so many plans, they need a new plan to keep track of their plans.
what a joke.

I'm assuming this is just a formality
File the paperwork for FA, then sign the deal. Probably gives them more time to negotiate the contract they were presented with – not necessarily the the money, but the ancillary details.

yup

Either Hoffman doesn’t like the direction that the team is headed, and wouldn’t mind seeing what else is out there, or he’s trying to get one last generous deal to book-end his career with.

This is just a ..
…formality – like John Smoltz who just filed for Free Agency as well.

I think the Padres are dragging their feet on Giles option because
They want to see if they can get a CF in the Peavy trade and move Guret to RF and keep Headly in Left.

I bet instead
they’re seeing if there’s a way to trade and get something for Giles
TheAxManCometh - October 31, 2008
Giles is a 10/5 guy so he would have to approve any trade that would be proposed…

You really think any team but the Padres will sign Trev?
Thats a negative.

Trev, the grass is greener
elsewhere. Especially next year.
