Peavy could be a Dodger or a Brave by next week

Peavy unlikely to go to Astros

Major League sources told MLB.com that Peavy is strongly believed to be drawing the most interest from the Dodgers and the Braves, and that a deal could be completed in the very near future, possibly in the next week.

I will be really disappointed in the Padres if they trade Peavy to LA.  I can't even imagine it right now.  That will be punch to the kidneys.  I've been thinking he'll either stay a Padre or end up with the Braves, it's hard to say.  Just remember Jake, you have the power to stay, so you use it!

Peavy's first choice, according to the MLB.com source, is Houston, but it is unlikely that the Astros have enough Minor League talent to offer the Padres, who are seeking starting pitching and, possibly, a center fielder.

Peavy doesn't need to be getting into any more trouble with Oswalt.  It's for the best.

Dude LA?

I’m all for trading Jake if it makes the team better, but LA? That is something I cannot get behind.

wtf LA?

screw that noise.

If they trade Peavy to the Dodgers that might be more than I can take...
I still want Peavy to stick around.
2009 NL Cy Young

#44, RHP, Jacob Peavy, San Diego Padres ..

take it to the bank!

if he goes to the doyers i will take a picture of myself punching myself in the face
Agreed.

I’m all for the trade. I think is executed correct, it could really benefit the Padres. But to trade in the division would be stupid beyond belief. Only guy I’d trade him for in the division is Lincecum (Like that would happen). Ugh

It's probably even split between LA and ATL

In terms of what they might be offering. The nightmare PR scenario of trading Peavy to the Dodgers however means that he goes to ATL.

only way i'd accept trading him to LA is..........

if we positively RAPE (yes I’m using that word to describe it) the dodgers club and farm system.

Basically
Matt Kemp/Andre Either
Clayton Kershaw
James McDonald
Delwon Young
Scott Elbert
or maybe Russell Martin

Colletti

He still runs the Dodgers, so anything is possible. He may even throw in Jon Lester in the deal (and I know that Lester plays for the Red Sox), he is THAT bad.

I voted Dodgers...

only because I have such a sour, negative, pessimistic feeling about this whole thing. Indeed, going to the dodgers would be the worst case scenario for me…

I can't wait to see how The Consigliore would spin a trade to the Dodgers

“Do you see what we did there? By keeping Peavy within the division, we’re allowing Padre fans to continue to watch him on a regular basis. He’ll be so close, it’ll be like he never left. In getting all these new players from Los Angeles AND keeping Jake in Southern California, everyone wins.”

No comment from royhobbs, eh?

Interesting.

Sorry

Spent the last 10 days on vacation at the beach and in Las Vegas. Saw preliminary “Padres seriously talking with Braves about Peavy” headlines at a sports book while watching the Rays piss away game 5 of the ALCS costing me $50 and felt my liver shiver.

So i’m still playing catch-up with sports news and Peavy-Atlanta rumors. So far, from what I’m seeing the Padres could be getting one hell of a major-league-ready middle infield (Kelly Johnson, Yunel Escobar) as well as our top pitching prospect (Tommy Hanson, threw no-hitter in AA), but this is all still speculation as far as I am concerned.

What team will Jake Peavy play for in 2009?

Who cares?

No matter what

the Dodgers should be off the table..unless Peavy is injured and this is just a way to screw the Dodgers long term. You don’t trade to a division rival. How simple is that?

If having the Dodgers ON the table drives up the price...

…then by all means the Dodgers should be on the table. I have a big problem with them trading him to the Dodgers…but if negotiating with them forces the Braves to give up a bigger package…then I’m all for it.

You know what bothers me the most

The season isn’t even over yet. Shouldn’t this BS wait until after the World Series?

Wait... who's season isn't over?

Mine ended about 4 months ago, I really shouldn’t have to wait any longer.

Agreed

I can’t speak for pb&j, but this move might just be the thing that gets me interested in this team again.

I was done in June
OK

I am a baseball fan before a Padres fan, so for me the MLB baseball season is not over yet. Regardless, aren’t teams restricted from making major announcements until after the World Series? Didn’t ARod get in trouble for announcing he opted out of his contract during the WS? Just because your team didn’t make it to the WS, you should still show some class and wait for the championship to be determined before upstaging it.

I don't believe it's an official restriction

I think it’s always been one of those unwritten rules that out of respect for the postseason teams would stay quiet until it was all over. So…good job, Padres.

There's no restriction

Towers wants this out there so that teams can put together a package before the meetings in Las Vegas following the World Series. The best thing for the Padres (if they are trading Peavy) is a bidding war for Jake Peavy, that’s what Towers wants to create. No point in rushing into anything. They can wait a few years to trade Peavy if they want and probably still get plenty of value.

Ah yes!

I have been long awaiting the Hot Stove season, when you can fantasize that your team really is improving, and bask in the hope that spring holds. Maybe the Padres can draft that kid from “The Twilight Zone” and he can wish Bud Black into the cornfield.

The following Dodger trade, which is semi rational, would be acceptable

Peavy
for
Matt Kemp (future CF/RF)
Clayton Kershaw (immediate #3, prob #2 starter future)
James McDonald (another long term pitcher, prob #3)
Chin Lung Hu (SS immediately replaces Greene)
AJ Ellis (Defensive C)

That's pretty close

I wonder if you could get a roster filler guy that doesn’t really fit on the Dodgers 25 man roster. Like a Rene Rivera or a Luis Maza or a relief pitcher. Somebody who isn’t a prospect, but could provide some help. Kind of like how the A’s got Eveland in the Haren deal. Or maybe just another High-A pitcher with upside.

Another Thought

If I pretend to be Ned Coletti I could squint and see this as upgrading from Kershaw to Peavy, getting rid of a player that is redundant (Kemp) because I have Jones and Pierre, a minor league pitcher I don’t need (McDonald), a young SS I don’t like (Hu) and some guy I’ve never heard of (Ellis). But then again, maybe I haven’t bashed my head against the wall enough to know how Coletti really thinks.

got to love Coletti

running a prospect deep club, that your Assistant GM put together, when you are making a trade with him.

Scouting Director Logan White put it together

Not Assistant GM Kim Ng.

But I’m sure that’s what you meant.

Close

I think the Padres would ask for the other 19 year old pitcher they were going to take in the Maddux deal in addition (but upgraded once they dodgers went to the playoffs).

that could work

depending on who that is, but yeah i’m also game to get another throw in reliever

Kershaw’s is their crown jewel and has the potential to be a stud, that’d be hte toughest to swallow
Kemp they don’t seem to wanna let him play in actuality and he could also be something very special
McDonald, fine they can trade him
Hu I don’t know but in dodger fashion they don’t play their own yong players instead going for older veterans
Ellis is the top defensive catcher in their system in high A

That would be fantastic. Even Ned can’t be that dumb.
