The Cassel family is in a really interesting spot. They have Jack Cassel, pitcher for the Padres, who, regardless of last night, would still realistically be considered 6th or 7th on the list of starters. And this really, at a time when the team is considering what sort of 3-man rotation to put together for the postseason. And then you have Matt Cassel, who plays backup for Tom Brady and the Patriots.
The interesting thing about that is that the family gets both the benefits of fame and obscurity. Two sons, playing in two major league sports, both in somewhat "fringe" positions, but both in a position that they could be superstars at the drop of a hat.
God forbid and knock on wood that the Padres would lose a starter sometime this month. It would only really take one more decent start for Jack to be placed in some pretty big games. If something ridiculous were to happen injurywise to Tom Brady (see: Week 2 of regular season), then brother Matt would be the starting QB for a Super Bowl contender.
In any case, I guess it's a nice problem to have. Although, now that I think about it, as a Padres and Charger fan, if Jack ever effed up while pitching for the Padres, I think I would hate him that much more for being related to a Patriot.

Clay I get.
But I can't think of one other guy I'd rather have start than Cassel.Drama - September 1, 2007
When I met Shawne Merriman
a couple months ago, he said he was specifically gunning for Brady. So Cassel's (Matt) time is definitely coming.matthewverygood - September 1, 2007
