Figured rather than doing a link diary today, I'd just put these here, as I'm thinking this is where the action is going to be today.Lamb and Loretta?
Here's the article that mentions Piazza and Klesko that Dex mentioned above.
Andrew Brown, the pitcher we traded for Bradley, is doing well in Oakland.
MLB Trade Rumors is updating by the moment.
Winfield's Ghost - July 31, 2007
i like the idea of
Lamb and Loretta. we've discussed the benefits of Loretta to death, and the Union Tribune does a good job of pointing out all of the ways in which Lamb can help (he hits righties better than Kooz, Kooz needs rest for his back, he's an upgrade over Branyan).John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
Eckstein, Piazza, Klesko
These trade rumours are so lame, I'm using the British spelling. I can't wait until we have an actual farm system in 2018.Dalton - July 31, 2007
Dodgers and Yankees: Betemit for Proctor
Are we worried about that?Dex - July 31, 2007
i'm not
proctor has been worked into the ground these last few seasons by torre. i don't think he's got enough left in the tank to do any real damage for the dodgers. i do like the idea of them giving up on betemit so soon though.John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
Proctor's arm is pretty dead
Torre really just throws him out there as soon as he can, as often as he can. Plus the guy's been pretty wild this year.http://nomaas.org/images/proctor_arm.jpg
Dalton - July 31, 2007
Of more concern
would be the Dbacks/Dodgers adding decent starters.Dalton - July 31, 2007
Done Deal
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Yankees and Dodgers have completed the rumored Scott Proctor for Wilson Betemit trade.Drama - July 31, 2007
In a word
no.Pants - July 31, 2007
Don't be so sure
From Wikipedia:"Scott Proctor is a power pitcher with a diverse pitch repertoire. Proctor's fastball ranges from 94 mph to almost 100, although he was known to throw beyond 100 as the closer for the Columbus Clippers, the Yankees' former AAA affiliate. As a former minor league starter, Proctor features several plus pitches. He will throw both four and two-seam fastballs. Proctor's secondary pitches include a mid-eighties slider, a high seventies curveball, and an occasional changeup in the low eighties. Scott will throw all but his changeup in any count, but his primary weapons are the four-seam fastball, the curve, and the slider. Proctor's power fastball/curve/slider combo and willingness to pitch multiple innings of relief have drawn comparisons to Scot Shields of the Los Angeles Angels."

Three hours to go
and I'm getting nervous. Not that I doubt KT, just that this whole thing has the feeling of one of Trevor's saves: you know he's going to get the job done better than anyone else in his line of work but it's still nervewracking 'til it's over.TheThirdGonzalez - July 31, 2007
sadly
i don't see anything happening. the biggest possible deal we could pull off would be prospects for mike lamb. and if houston does that, they have to admit that they're destroying and rebuilding, which probably means the end of Phil Gardner. that's a tough decision to make.KT loves to let the trade deadline pass and then play the waiver game. he does it just about every year.
a move i would absolutely LOVE and i haven't heard anything about is sending the pitching prospects we just got over to Toronto for Troy Glaus. he can play 3B, SS or 2B and is a right-handed hitter with a ton of power. he's a difference maker.
John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
Glaus at 2B
Troy Glaus has never played 2B as a professional and has only played 16 games at SS in more than 10 years in professional baseball. He's a 3B/DH...He's not an answer.
paul @ Gaslamp Ball - July 31, 2007
glaus
i seem to remember hearing last year that glaus was willing to move to ss or 2b to make room for some big bats in toronto's lineup. this is mostly what my assumption was based on. he's also not your normal slow-footed 3b, he's fairly quick.John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
i'm with obviousman
If I had to bet, I'd say KT stands pat. Maybe one underwhelming trade. Would love to pick up someone like Troy Glaus, but I don't see it happening. Then again, I thought Crystal Pepsi would last through at least 2050.Dalton - July 31, 2007

I'm with ya....
I really want to see us get some bench help (Lamb or Loretta) and another starter. This will be a stressful few hours.Drama - July 31, 2007
Ummmm, too much wishful thinking
One bat won't change this line-up... and given Towers history, another Joe Randa/Todd Walker type trade will not help this team. We just need to stick with small ball and clutch hitting... it's just too bad we strike out so much. All year the small ball hasn't been working, and we end up winning on solo hr's. We need that clutch hitter, and it seems like Geoff Blum (?!?!?!) and Milton are the only Padres capable of that at this moment.19 51 @ Gaslamp Ball - July 31, 2007
I don't think we're getting anything recognizable
The names I see getting thrown around here aren't "supersubs". They're starters. We're not going to replace any positions at this point except for maybe second base and even then, I'd call it a long shot. We'll get somebody that I think most Gaslamp Ballers would be like, "oh... we got him?"
Dex - July 31, 2007
i don't get this
why are we held in a lower standard than other ballclubs?-the braves have a veteran and a rookie at 1B, both playing decent, but to push for the playoffs they go get the biggest bat available.
-the phillies have a few guys who could fill in at 2B for a month for chase utley, but they go get a starter to fill his shoes and eventually help with the mess at 3B
we're not the only team that is "solid" at most positions and flawed at just one or two. that's why we have the record we have right now. but how are we ever going to get past the first round of the playoffs with a solid, but flawed team every year. hope and pray that our strengths cover our weaknesses? what about lessening the weaknesses? being aggressive?
the fans care, we write blogs, we go to games and WE WANT TO WIN. i, for one, am sick of being just good enough to get my heart ripped out in the playoffs. eight teams make the playoffs each year. we've made in the last few years even though we are TWENTY-SEVENTH OUT OF THIRTY TEAMS in terms of overall payroll. we're always somewhere in the top 10 in attendance, with the exception of the last couple years at the Q. what is the problem with actually going for it and adding more than a bench player?
i'm tired of this:
"currently second base for us is being covered by Marcus Giles (hitting under .200 for the last 3 months) and Geoff Blum (hitting .237 for the year). not to mention our starting SS is hitting .233 and our starting 3B is hitting .236. that's at least 3 starters hitting under .240 each night out!!!"
championships are built on defense and pitching and a team that can actually make contact.
John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
Those teams
have farm systems. The Braves system is always LOADED. The phillies have done a good job getting respectible the last few years. We have almost zero major-league ready players in our system. This was obvious when we had to bring up Chase from AA ball after he only had 150 AB there.
Right now our A-ball team is killing it, but it is going to be another 3 years before we start seeing them in the majors, and another 2 years before they are tradeable pieces.
Ron Mexico - July 31, 2007
exactly
our farm system sucks right now, so why aren't we taking some team's big contract off of their hands (like glaus)? obviously nobody is coming up from the minors to fill these holes or flaws we have. most of the people on this board put more faith in "hope" than the team. hope marcus gets it going again, or blum keeps hitting, or milton bradley takes off.John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
whoops
sorry, got a little carried away. we're actually 24th in overall payroll, not 27th. here are some teams that are ahead of us though:Atlanta Braves
Oakland Athletics
Minnesota Twins
Cincinnati Reds
KC Royals
these are teams that i always hear referred to as "cheap". these are the teams that cannot afford to sign their talented young players to long term deals (usually). we are not only in their league in terms of payroll, but we are far below them.
here's how they stack up in terms of attendance this year:
San Diego (12th)
Atlanta (14th)
Oakland (25th)
Minnesota (18th)
Cincinnati (22nd)
Kansas City (28th)
why are we spending less than them?
John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
Alderson's thoughts
Sandy and KT stated they had more money to spend this year, but did not like the contracts that the FA were getting. He doesn't believe in financially mortgaging the future on ridiculous contracts. Can't say that I blame him either, I hated the last few years when we had 60% of our payroll in dead money with the likes of Nevin/Park, Klesko, Woody, etc. Also if you look at all the large contracts signed in the last 10 years very few have worked out, from the past offseason three of them already looks like complete flops (Schmidt, Zito and Drew), and I think that the others will be bad.
Here are few highlights of bad contracts that are still out there or just ended in the last year:
Michael Young: somehow this was a bad contract as soon as he signed even though he is the same player statstically as Jeter.
Helton: (can't be traded)
Hampton (was paid by two teams not to pitch for them)
Giambi,
Manny: (was put on waivers and NO team claimed him, of course this season they thought it was playable
Sweeney: (as soon as he signed this KC was doomed)
Damon: (had one good season for the yankess, not great, now he is terrible)
Nagle (I think this one came off the books two years ago, but he was dead money for 5 of the 8 years, and not good when he pitched)
AROD (Texas is paying the Yankess almost $5M a year for the remainder of the contract; You could argue he is worth that much money but it did not help out the Rangers)
Randy Johnson (somehow the D-Backs have eaten parts of the last TWO contracts he has signed so he wouldn't pitch for them?????).
Griffey (I like Jr. and think he is worth his salary but for 4 years he was blamed for all of the Reds problems).
Carl Pavano (one of the all time worsts).
What signings have worked recently? Pujols seems like he making his money, but once he turns 38 next year....I mean 28.....
Jeter is making $18M a year seems like that is good(great if you have a $220M payroll), but if you take him out of the Stadium his power. numbers go down signficantly.
Ron Mexico - July 31, 2007
What's Todd Walker upto?
I remember that I hated the contract he got, and after Marcus's April we all but wrote him off. At this point he seems like he would have been a good option as 2b.Worse thought is that he could of been installed at 3b after Kouz's early struggles.

isn't it Guidry? is Balsley really that much better than Guidry?i'll take Igawa for free, but somehow i don't see the Yankees going for that.
John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
I think he could help us
because the majority of NL hitters haven't stepped in against him much if at all... up until we overexpose him like we have a tendency to do. I can see him putting up great numbers for us the rest of this season and being completely figured out by everybody by Opening Day (sound familiar?).TheThirdGonzalez - July 31, 2007
He'd probably take Germano's spot, I would think
And the only advantage there is that Igawa at least strikes out batters once in a while....in addition to walking a ton....and giving up a lot of HR's (I'm aware that he's in the AL East). I ain't no fancy scout, but I've watched several of his games this year, and they're pretty painful. If he ever pops up on waivers, great, but trading anything other a single-A bench player for him at this point seems like a pointless lateral move.Dalton - July 31, 2007
I'd do it
I'd almost rather get an Igawa who COULD get better, than a Weaver who WON'T get better. The Padres really wanted him in the off-season and we all know how good Towers is at finding pitchers. In PETCO and the pitcher-friendly NL West, I wouldn't be against an Igawa trade.JollyWaffle - July 31, 2007

Papelbon and Gagne
I think they might want Gagne to "share" the closer role because there has been some concern in the past about Papelbon overworking his shoulder in a relieving role and they probably want to keep him healthy. Hideki Okajima kind of shares the closer role now, and he and Gagne could make a good righty-lefty half-closer...or something.ExPadtriate - July 31, 2007

I think we are DESTINED to have Ensberg as a Padre"He just needed to be spotted correctly. Ensberg against all lefties and softer righties, and Lamb against legit righties wou;d've netted some nice numbers. I don't think Ensberg is a star by any means, but I do think he'd be a very useful part-time player."
Non-star, part-time player.....sounds like our new cleanup hitter!
Ron Mexico - July 31, 2007
the nice thing about enbsberg
If there was ever a player that could be described as "clutch", it's Ensberg. That's a guy that will show up precisely when he's needed and only in somewhat desperate situations. And I don't mean that as a completely good thing.Dex - July 31, 2007
why
why do we need Ensberg? or Eckstein for that matter? as far as i'm concerned, the padres need a bat to play either 3B, 2B or SS.Tejada, Glaus, etc.
John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
I dunno...
Is Ensberg a former padre or a local boy? Those are really the two main types of players we target.
perhaps we could sign him under the "washed up star" clause, but whether or not he was ever actually a star is uncertain.

Ensberg
Ensberg attended Redondo Union High School (Redondo Beach, California) and starred in baseball and basketball.
Ensberg attended the University of Southern California and played third base for the 1998 National Champions. Current Astros Jason Lane and Eric Munson also played on that team.
Drama - July 31, 2007
I love Ensberg
I went to USC when they won the national championship in 1998, and got to see all three of them play. (Jason Lane was one of their better starting pitchers, incidentally, and batted for himself in the lineup) I went to pretty much every home baseball game while I was there (I missed a couple in my last two years). Two fun Ensberg stories:His parents are pretty awesome. There was one game that I remember, when his dad was up and dancing to Copacabana being played over the speakers, and his parents had a coorordinated thing going, where they were sitting in different places in the stadium (the seating area was pretty tiny), and when he would make a good play, one of them would say "Whose boy is that?" and the other would say "That's my boy!" Needless to say, if we could make this happen at Petco, it would be fantastic.
In another game, one of the umpires had been hit by a ball, and knocked out of the game. For the remainder of the game, there was no third base umpire. A left handed batter was up, and with two strikes, he tried to check his swing. The home plate umpire didn't call a strike, so Munson appealed to third base, where Ensberg was all by his lonesome, there being no umpire. Ensberg signaled that he went, and the home plate umpire rang the guy up.
In conclusion, all of the Ensbergs are pretty awesome, and I'd love to have him as a Padre.

I like the idea of making a small improvement and not giving up too much. This depends of course on who the prospect was, but I'm assuming it wasn't anyone of note.I really like Mackowiak and think he'll be a great addition to the bench. He isn't sexy, but a deep bench is just as important as a deep bullpen. I'd rather have him around than Hairston, who doesn't seem like a very capable pinch hitter. He might be a good player if he got the chance to start, but they'd have to be crazy to let him take at bats away from Jose Cruz, let alone the starters. Mackowiak is a guy who has proven that he can produce decent numbers as a starter.

I guess some of you guys are upset that the Padres didn't make a big splash, but instead got a bunch of ".220-.270" hitters. Were we supposed to get Jermaine Dye instead? If you haven't noticed, he's batting .235 with a .295 OBP. The best hitter who moved was Mark Teixeira, who plays 1B. The Padres sorta already have 1B guy, and I don't much want to replace him even if he's struggled lately. And the best starting pitcher to move was Kyle Lohse, who stinks.metalsupplier - July 31, 2007

Mackowiak
i don't think they're throwing him in there as a replacement at 3rd. he's played 1 game there this year (against 58 played in LF) and 6 games there last year (against 100+ in the 3 OF positions). if anyone is the replacement at 3rd, it's Ensberg. Hillenbrand seems like more a backup 1B/pinch hitter and Mockowiak seems like an upgrade over Sledge.John Gennaro - July 31, 2007
I don't get the Ensberg deal at all.
Ensberg can ONLY play 3rd and is hitting just .216 against righties this season. Why take playing time away from Kouz? Didn't we trade Barfield away to develop Kouz into our starting third baseman? We stuck by Kouz through an AWFUL April...and it seemed to have paid off. Since the beginning of May he's hitting .273 with 10 HR's and 40 RBI. NOW we're going to give up on him?? I don't get it.I understand that Kouz was struggling against right-handed pitching. If you want to platoon him with a guy that can actually hit righties....cool. But that guy is NOT Morgan Ensberg.
Rob Mackowiak can hit righties...but he's barely played third base over the last two seasons. He's only played seven games at third since the start of the 2006 season. And he hasn't played 2nd base since the 2005 season. The guy is primarily an OF. How many more goddamn outfielders do we need?? I want to Giles, Cam and Bradley out there. That's IT.
Going into the dealine we needed a guy that could help out at second and another starting pitcher. We got neither. Did the Padres get better today? I don't know. Did the Portland Beavers get better? Probably.
Drama - July 31, 2007
Why we got Ensberg
2005: 36 HR, 101 RBI, .283 BA, .388 OBP, .557 SLGSo they're gambling that the last season and a half was an aberration.
I personally think Kouz is still the starter.

Ensberg was great on my fantasy team...
... in 2005.He has not been NEARLY the same player since.
Spec20 - July 31, 2007
Same
Then I went to a function where he was speaking and he basically admitted to doing well in season when he knew it was most visible and then reverting to a .220 hitter the rest of the time. I had him on my next fantasy team and sure enough... .220. At least he was honest.Dex - July 31, 2007

I'm a little upset with Mackowiak's attitude...
"I'm extremely disappointed," Mackowiak said before the White Sox played the Yankees in New York. "It hurts to go from the team you grew up watching and idolized as a kid."Someone better pee on him in the shower.

Somebody give him a hug...sqrunt - July 31, 2007
Eff that guy already
unless a few slaps from Greg's HOF member straighten him out. Padres baseball isn't that bad, Robby- unless shitty, out-of-contention baseball is just kind of your cup of tea. Don't be a douchebag; embrace your new home- might as well deal with it; the White Sox won't be needing you back to catch anyone's knuckleball.TheThirdGonzalez - July 31, 2007
we lost Snacks!?
NOOOOOOOOO!!!That was our best direct chance for an interview with a player.
Dex - July 31, 2007
Yeah, for these guys?
Ledezma started the season with Detroit, then was traded to Atlanta. The 26-year-old lefty was 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in 12 games for the Braves and designated for assignment Sunday. Startup, a 23-year-old lefty, was in his third season in the minors. Then again, I will never question KT on pitching trades....but will brutally critisize him on everything else (except Bradly).
planetjeffy - July 31, 2007
Matt Morris to the Pirates
The Pirates have acquired Matt Morris from the Giants for outfielder Rajai Davis and a player to be named later. I'm guessing they just wanted salary relief, because Davis isn't much more than a speedy reserve outfielder.Drama - July 31, 2007

It was. Wasn't trying to steal from www.mlbtraderumors.com....just trying to get the trade info out as quickly as possible. Thanks, though.Drama - July 31, 2007
And
...WTF do you mean by "vintage"?Drama - July 31, 2007
Startup
The Ring deal was about Will Startup, who is apparently a lefty prospect and not, as I first thought, a made up name. From Padres press release:Startup, 22, is 3-2 with a save and a 2.23 ERA (12 ER/48.1 IP) in 42 appearances at Triple-A Richmond in 2007. He has walked 17 and fanned 47.
Note the BB/K ratio compared to Ring.

Compared to Mackowiak...
at least Ensberg seems chipper:"I didn't perform well here at all," Ensberg told Houston television station KRIV. "I am really looking forward to a new start."
Cool...except for the "I didn't perform well" part.

I am sad to see Merv go. I could see his influence with guys like Khalil. But on the other hand... WB WALLY!
Axion - July 31, 2007
Ledezma?
Really? He seems like a liability. I don't mind a straight-up Snacks/Startup trade, but making Ledezma a Padre carries the risk that Bud Black will actually use him in a game.ExPadtriate - July 31, 2007
Ledezma

on any waiver trade we happen to make (which will assuredly be badass in the long run).TheThirdGonzalez - July 31, 2007
Whoa
Just saw the Wally Joyner thing. I like this this. I have no idea how he is as a hitting coach I just know I liked him when he was a Padre.I have this one clear memory of talking to him in a Henry's Grocery Store when I was like 7 when he had a broken arm.

Interesting day...
I've kept my head out of the blog to just soak in the day and not let my emotion of not getting a big namer get in the way of reality. The reality is...most of the sports writers and blog sites OUTSIDE of San Diego regard KT and the Pads as winners in the trade deadlines...
Why? Because recognizing that there wasn't anyone that was really viable for us to pickup, KT did the one thing he could do, and that was upgrade the bench, and did so dirt cheap.
Think about it, we KNOW we are going to be pulling Wells, Germano, Maddux out at 6th or 7th...in these games, if any of these bench guys came up big for us, and they had their chances, maybe the outcomes of some of these games are different.
I'm upset that we got no big names, but I'm glad we upgraded the bench and did so for nothing.
Um...hello, isn't Milton Bradley doing essentially what this supposed "big named bat" would have been doing.
Second base...hmmm...options aren't over, people can clear waivers, it isn't a far fetched thought that we could still pick up a viable 2nd baseman by the end of the year.
bktabinga - July 31, 2007
i think we made some decent moves, considering
our bench was way weak. actually awful. and hopefully we have a couple guys now who aren't automatic outs in pinch hit situations. we made a couple pitching moves that might be fine but that i don't have any real informed opinions about.but, really, what was out there? were we going to get teixeira or gagne?
i was interested in that igawa rumor. i've watched kei igawa be awful this year for the yankees...but i think a fresh start in petco on a good staff--and out of the AL east and the excruciating limelight of new york--might have done him some good. certainly no worse than a lot of germano/wells starts.
goose1 - July 31, 2007
cut Machowiak a little slack
Guy was probably totally shocked to be traded, sounds like he was just being honest.Besides, once he gets to SD -- I think the "disappointment" will probably go away. I mean, if you're a ballplayer, how could you not want to play in SD? Weather's great, people are nice, new ballpark, camo uniforms, etc . ..
Nick G - July 31, 2007
Compared to our us
our rivals didn't seem to do much tweaking. Dodgers did the Proctor/Betemit deal (they needed pitching, but I'm not sure I think this was the best move for them.) Diamondbacks and Rockies didn't do much of anything except give us Hairston. Giants...well, who cares?Compared to them, all the deadline trading action in the West went down in SD. (Not to mention we also fire our hitting coach.) Does all this make it look like we're scrambling in a panic to make our team better, while the other teams are more confident with what they have?
Mr Meadows - July 31, 2007
That should be
"Compared to us" (not "compared to our us"):-)

socalgirl30 - July 31, 2007
Since the Alderson reign began
the Pads cannot be accused of not making moves. They are active all year long. THE move was Bradley. We upgraded our bench and bullpen, but am I happy? No, goddammit.planetjeffy - July 31, 2007
It doesn't matter...
It doesn't matter who the messenger is. This will be the third hitting coach in less than 3 years. These guys who need instruction just do not listen. They do not take there batting practice or cage sessions to the plate. This team just does not make any adjustments to the situation. They are the most frustrating team in baseball. They all go up there trying to hit a homerun. Every at bat, every time! This is why Magadan got fired this is why Rettenmund got fired and this is why Wally is just a 2 month band aid fix. He will not be back next year. Why should he? They won't listen!Mas Tequila - August 1, 2007
