I hope this isn't the beginning of something else

We've all read about Peavy getting arrested now and even though this is probably a non-story, it worries me a little. We all know that Peavy is a hot head, but something like this feels like it could be an indicator that he's a prick as well.

Towers sounds like he's downplaying this, but think about the sequence of events. Peavy's at the airport. An officer asks him to move his car because he's double parked or something and Peavy flat out refuses.

"Oh what, I was doing something illegal, officer? I'll just pay the ticket. That's how rich I am and how little I care about your stupid laws. I'm famous."

Think about how much of a bitch it is to get in and out of the airport. Then think of all the pricks who don't bother paying attention to anything around them, thereby making it even more of a bitch to navigate.

Then think about people who flat out refuse to abide by rules and laws because they feel that they make enough money that they're better than you and can buy their way out of inconvenient situations.

And that's about the part where you're thinking about Jake Peavy.

Shame on you, Jake Peavy! You're not above the law!

Disagree
First off, ive been to that airport and it isnt exactly LAX. His double parking probably didnt hold anything up.

Think about this...Who is that redneck cop who brings the hometown hero in because of something like that? Sure Peavy is hot headed but hes not disrespectful of the law. Probably just another case of an asshole cop on a power trip.

Disagree!
A female security officer warned him, made suggestions of what he could do and he said "Why don't you call a real cop?" Not smart Jake, not smart.

Why didn't he just park the truck in the proper lot, rent a luggage cart like everyone else and walk in without any problems?

I agree with Dex. Poor planning and a definite display of arrogance on his part. He's cocky! We know that! We see it on the mound. This was an unfortunate incident where that cockiness became a bit of assholery. I believe at his core that he is a decent guy so I hope this takes him down a notch.

I wasn't there
but the article mentioned that Peavy was in the process of moving his stuff into the airport. Don't know what was said by the officer to set Peavy off. Still, his comment was stupid.
I say
he should be traded!

"I say we let him go!"  - PW Hermann

Call a real cop
UT:
Katie Peavy detailed what happened next, according to her husband:

Peavy was unloading the truck and pushing his bags through the gate when he was approached by a female security guard who told him to move the truck.

"Jake told me he said he'd move it as soon as he got his last bag into the terminal," Katie Peavy said. "But the guard said a truck couldn't be left at the curb without a driver."

The security guard said she would have to write him a ticket. Katie said Jake responded, "Write me a ticket" before saying "Call a real cop."

So she did, and Peavy was taken to jail. Then he had to catch a later flight to the Dominican Republic.

"It was just him not cooperating with the officer who was really just trying to help him," Kincaid said. "(Peavy) was offered some alternatives to help him with the situation, and he declined."

What a spin
"It was just him not cooperating with the officer who was really just trying to help him," Kincaid said. "(Peavy) was offered some alternatives to help him with the situation, and he declined."

I guess he can't say that the 'get a real cop' comment set the guard off.

Stupid
This was just a stupid, arrogant move on Peavy's part.  Regardless of how small the airport is, you don't just bail out of a car and leave it at any airport these days.  And popping off like he apparently did compounded the problem.  As Christina pointed out, at a small airport, it probably would've taken an extra five minutes to park the truck in the right place.

There is no excuse for being a jackass.

Point / Counterpoint
Point:

Jake is a popular guy in San Diego and if he pitches well the next two years, he'll be a real popular $100m free agent.  (Should we offer him a contract extension after a good '07 season?  Yes!)  Maybe he had been drinking and kept telling his driver to keep the car there.  Who knows, I still think he is a cool guy.

Counterpoint:

Some airport cop at the Mobile Regional Airport (MRA) popped off to Jake and he popped off back.  He probably was saying some goodbyes to family, and ended up getting extended while a someone was waiting to move the family car.  He decides he'll pay a $200-300 ticket to have 5 minutes to say goodbye.  Some Alabama cop has to play "who's is bigger" and busts his ass.  Sounds fishy.

Maybe
he had Icy Hot on his boys and was irritable.
Weak
Now I may have a bias towards the law and fake traffic cops but let the dude get his luggage out of his truck, professional pitcher or not. I'm so sick of people in authority (real or not) thinking that they need to enforce "rules" all the time.

I can picture it... dude drives up and starts getting the bags out of his truck, some security guard who just got out of a team building morning meeting about enforcing the rules gets all uppity and tells him to move the truck. He, who probably just spent the last 10 hours trying to get all his wife's shit into the truck, and then after finally getting her out the door to the airport just to hear her tell him all the other shit she probably forgot, just wants to get his stuff checked in and on his flight. Let the dude do what he needs to do, he'll move the truck when he's done.

I would have handled it the same way. I think it's the Alabama police that over reacted. This will all blow over. Non story.

He was alone
Read the synopsis that Jbox posted from the UT. He was alone. His wife was at home with the kids. He was supposed to leave his car in the long term lot and then his brother was going to arrange to pick it up. He pulled up to the drop off, left his truck unattended, and was walking into the terminal to check his bags, essentially parking his car temporarily at the front.
talk about weak
... this woman that is to blame for the whole scenario, was she bleeding too?
Fairweather
He paid his ticket and his bail.  I am sure Jake will do some community service too....but I can't say I blame him. I think most of us get mad when 25 starts popping off at us.
Yo
It's Ron Mexico everybody!!!

Ya know Ron, sometimes people just don't get the humor of this blog and my over the top sexist rants. I'm trying to "paint the big picture" if you will.

Imagine this poor guy's morning trying to get all his stuff ready for the flight... I mean what do you even pack for the Dominicon? His kids are probaly screamin' running around throwing fastballs at each other, dog is barking, wife keeps flushing the toilet while he's taking a shower... then after a horrible drive in rush hour traffic he gets some upitty rent-a-cop all up in his grizz-ill! Can't a brotha just get a break?

Maybe I'm just mad cause I got a speeding ticket yesterday.

speeding ticket
sorry, I didn't get it...  maybe I'm just mad cause I'm bleeding!  :}
I think...
Peavy just forgot what team he played for, and for a brief moment thought he was a San Diego Charger. I think it would have been a complete non-issue if he hadn't said get a real cop.
Devil's Advocate
He may not have been making a sexist remark. IIRC airport security don't dress like your average city policmen or county sherriff so he may have been referring to her status as airport security and not her gender. But I'd have to see the uniform to be sure. Until then, I see this as probably a lesson learned for Jake, and I have to say that if I was under the impression that I could double park and say goodbye and just pay a ticket for a parking violation, I probably would have done the same thing.

"...if I was under the impression that I could double park and say goodbye and just pay a ticket for a parking violation, I probably would have done the same thing."

If that's truly Jake's excuse and he was under that "impression", then he's a moron.  Who in the world thinks you can do that at any airport now?

I agree with everyone says its not really that big of deal - it's not.  It's just disappointing to see him act like a bozo when he didn't need to.

Bozo
Well, Jake is a pitcher with a rocket arm from Alabama, not a rocket scientist. To think of it I am just glad to hear that his truck didn't have a old broken refrigerator in the back, and his luggage wasn't garbage bags tied together with duct tape.
This isn't even interesting
Why aren't we making noise about the gaping holes in our pitching staff? Is anyone concerned that our team batting average will .193? Let's talk about something more relevant than Peavy's hot head.....
Re: This isn't even interesting
You must think you're at McCovey Chronicles.
Disregard for the Law
I was watching Court TV's series Beach Patrol that is filmed here in San Diego.  It's pretty much like Cops except they are city life guards and a few police.  It's really good, but I think I might just like it because it's all San Diegan's.

In any case it's unbelievable how people talk to law enforcement, even in friendly San Diego.  In just about every situation if the person just kept their mouth shut they would have been let off with a warning or a small ticket.  Instead they escalate the situation and end up going to jail.

Don't get me wrong I know for a fact that the power goes to the head of some of these cops/security and it seems like they just like to make it difficult on you.

In any case I wonder what the repercussions will be.  Will Peavy have to hold a press conference at Friar Fest?  Will he volunteer to go into counseling?

I agree this isn't an 'issue'
even though I'm the one that pointed it out yesterday.

I just thought it was interesting- I never would have thought his hot head would have gotten him in trouble outside of Petco. (Although I don't excuse what he did- I would think he would hold himself up to a higher standard- he has children to teach societal standards to.)

I think the core 'issue' is the rampant ego epidemic in sports, regardless of how much a player is affected (and really, Peavy doesn't have much of an ego, compared to some) it affects all of them to some degree- they can come off as the most humble person on the planet, but still have an ego. We all do. It's what makes us human.

Headline shoulda been
Peavy Peaved!

Watch, he's gonna have to do the apology circuit and bow down to all the mall cops in America.

Let's keep this in perspective
Steve Foley was arrested for driving drunk and advancing on a police officer.  Terrence Kiel was arrested for selling drugs.  Dontrelle Willis was arrested for driving drunk.  Members of the Cincinnati Bengals have been arrested for many things, frequently driving drunk and gun related escapades at clubs late at night.  Jake Peavy was arrested for refusing to move his double parked car until after he checked his luggage at a small airport early in the morning.
I've been debating
whether or not to post this for quite some time but in light of this incident I feel as if Padres fans deserve to know. First off let me say that I am a HUGE Peavy fan and don't like to call his character into judgement but somethings just need to be said.

I have a friend who works for the Padres and found out through the grapevine that the night before game 1 one the NLDS instead of being home resting, Peavy was tearing it up at Moondoggies in PB. Apparently Peavy was so intoxicated that he was thrown out and proceeded to yell "Don't you know who the F'ck I am". Etc. Apparently the next day, game day, he showed up an hour and a half late and was extremely hungover. I guess he didn't even take all of his warm up pitches that day.

Again, I wasn't there to witness all of this but this comes from a very credible "In the clubhouse" source.

I would have to say that these actions are probably part of the reason that Peavy is no loner untouchable.

I've heard rumors
as well that bring Peavy's character into question, but I won't mention them because they affect innocent people.
It could explain some things...
...Like the fact that Peavy is even mentioned in trade rumors.  Just looking at the numbers, one would never expect a cheap team like the Padres to even consider trading a cheap/young/talented pitcher of Peavy's stature, but if they expect him to flame out, then it's another story entirely.

Just seconding your opinion.

I've also heard things about him
that are really hard to believe.  But after this, I'm sorta starting to believe them.  It's a shame because he's the one athlete I've met that has been nothing but a gentleman.  I think there are two sides to Jake.  One of the side we've been hearing about for years.  The other is the one that came out yesterday.  I still love the guy, but I do hope he goes on this Christian Mission of his in the Dominican and thinks all of this through very, very hard.
You all act like
you know the inner workings of peavys personality. Based on what? His intensity on the mound? Give me a break.

Players take on a whole different attitude when they are in game mode, so to translate that to his off field personality is just plain stupid.

All his teammates and people who have ever met him discribe him as one of the most gentlemanly players around, a southern boy by definition.

Sellouts.

Just a tip...
Don't f*ck with anybody in uniform (real or make believe) in the South.  I've lived there and it is always "yes sir (m'am)".  Then again, this could apply to San Diego, where you will always be seen "reaching into your waistband" for a gun that is never found.  This is a big year for Peavy.  He needs to turn his career around after last year.
rumors rumors rumors
it's like high school all over again.
This is worse than high school.
my question is...
a. does this mean he is no longer eligible to run for office in 08?

b. was he baller enough to pay his bail in cash from his wallet? (was he carrying 350 on him in cash?)

c. is jake lazy? (couldnt walk from the long term parking to the baggage checkin with his bags? wtf?

d. what happened to the car? did his bro wait all day to pick it up and take it home? cuz id be pissed if i got up at 5AM to get my brothers car from the airport and he ended up getting arrested. what a waste of sleep.

e. is wesloh chevrolet pissed that not only was thier spokesman arrested but for not moving his chevy? haha

guess i had more than one question

(if you take these seriously im sorry for you)

well
