B-Law goes for us today against Mark Redman. The Good News is that the bats have come alive. The Bad News is that I think the Padres took me a little too literally when I said they should be more aggressive on the basepaths. You can temper it a little, dudes. Don't go running yourself out of innings.
Chan Ho didn't exactly start off the way he would've wanted. I blame it on the long weekend. Next time out: 2 runs on 6 hits. You heard it here first.
Reader padres311 has started his own blog with a focus on the Mobile Bay Bears, which is of course the Padres Double-A Affiliate. Check out BayBear Beat for the start of some good minor league stuff. I'll add the link to the sidebar soon.
Remember the guy who got tossed out of the game for chanting "Towers Sucks"? Well, he's decided to speak his mind regarding the incident right here in the comments. I kinda forget sometimes that people actually read the blog. I kinda had it set in my head that the commentators are the only readers, and yet I know the lurkers are out there.
Also, here's a fun fact. We get a good amount of hits every day for this diary by thenerdhater. We consistently get people who find the blog through the Google search "Joe Morgan Sucks". So, there's an audience out there if you want to contribute to the ambitious project of finding all 25,000 ways Joe Morgan Sucks.
Go Padres!

Burroughs' future
The Coach on 1090 is saying that Sean Burroughs will likely end up being traded to the White Sox in a waiver wire deal for Joe Borchard.Any minute now.
Dex - August 4, 2005
I hope not.
Richard Wade - August 4, 2005
Figures
It seems every player I've ever gotten his autograph from, something happens. Eric Owens was traded and faded into the woodwork, Sterling Hitchcock was traded and retired soon after, Carlos Hernandez was traded and disappeared, Phil Nevin gone, Sean Burroughs...got his autograph on a t-shirt with his number and next season he changed his number. Ben Davis changed his number after I got his autograph and then was traded. Anyway, you get the point. At least I have players I can't say that about.. Sweeney for instance. Got his autograph when he was a Rockie, and then he became a Padre again. Yeah!Hey, sorry for my long messages. I just noticed it's becoming a trend.
Cy Young 44 - August 4, 2005
oy
who was that cat they got...he was a pawtucket sox player they traded for, and he looked like the NBT....dang I can't remember his name. I saw him on satellite back in the day when satellite was rare, and I watched some east coast minor league ball and saw him play...then he was a padre...this is totally the internet equivalent of staring up at the ceiling and rubbing my chin...garth - August 4, 2005
too hot for batting practice
DJ's playing third today. EY in left field today. Nady playing first. Olivo playing catcher.Let's see if the Olivo show can continue today. Dude was Les Miserables yesterday. He was Cats.

rallysticks
I just heard a San Diego Rally Sticks commercial on 1090. Are people really buying them? I never got around to checking them out.Dex - August 4, 2005
Chris Duffy
Emerging as the Pirates centerfielder of the present and the future! Duffy owes my brother-in-law $300. Jbox misreported $200 yesterday. It's actually $300.Dex - August 4, 2005
perfect sort of inning
When you're rooting for a player on the opposing team. He gets an extra base hit, but his team gets nothing.Brooks better shake Duffy down for that $300 in the offseason, man.

Padres MANUFACTURING!
See I'm actually fine with the small ball game as long as it's getting executed.Personally though, I think if your team's in a funk, you play for big innings.
But maybe this is newfound confidence on the part of the Padres.
Dex - August 4, 2005
Big Inning
In general I agree with you but I think that you gotta get runs however you can.16thkid @ Gaslamp Ball - August 4, 2005
Then Again
3 run homers work too.16thkid @ Gaslamp Ball - August 4, 2005
KHALIL!!!!
OH DANG!!!And sometimes when you play smallball... You end up scoring 4 runs.
Dex - August 4, 2005
Huge
Way to go, Kid Skillz. I take runs any way you can get them.Pants - August 4, 2005
What if...
What if the runs involve eating pigs brains? Or live bugs? I mean like crazy Fear is not a Factor type of stuff.Dex - August 4, 2005
Pig Brains?!?
Maybe not pig brains, but maybe 50 grilled cheese sammys.Pants - August 4, 2005
Well........
If it's the World Series and it's Game 7 and it's the bottom of the ninth and the Padres are down by 14 runs to the Yankees, I would take one bite of pig brain for every pitch until the Padres stage the greatest. comeback. ever. But I'll need some hot sauce.
Pants - August 4, 2005
hot sauce on pig brains
I wonder what kind of texture pig brains have. I'm guessing a weird combination of liver and octopus.Dex - August 4, 2005
Olivo's a quick catcher
I bet he sees some outfield time in the future.Dex - August 4, 2005
By quick I mean footspeed.

They miscalled it on the radio.Dex - August 4, 2005

No, It's 4-1
Unless Dex has psychic abilities and see the Bucs scoring a run in the bottom of the inning.Pants - August 4, 2005

Nope. Dex is no soothsayer.Pants - August 4, 2005
New Morgan comments
Just a heads up (since it's in the main post) that there are two new Joe Morgan comments I found over at Ben Maller. They are beyond ridiculous. Check out the diary.thenerdhater - August 4, 2005
Reason No. 193
Reason No. 193: Joe Morgan gives me indigestion, despite the fact I haven't eaten anything. Why?!?!?! Why?!?!? Nerdhater, why did you have to direct me to those nuggets of "Joe Morgan wisdom"?. Is there anyone in baseball more ignorant or stupid? Can he please just shut up already? I had finally put aside my bitterness about his comments regarding the Padres a couple weeks back and now this...
You done got me all riled up again. Actually, I guess you didn't do it, good ol' Joe did.
teemcee - August 4, 2005
whoa
did someone on the padres just steal a base?16thkid @ Gaslamp Ball - August 4, 2005
I think Loretta stole the base
Dex - August 4, 2005

Hitting Olivo? Leitner thinks it was intentional. Man, it's getting bad in Pittsburgh.Dex - August 4, 2005
B-Law Is Up
Based loaded, one out, and with this new crazy perspective on baserunning...Dare I say, squeeze play? I don't know, it sounds kinda TOO crazy.

16thkid @ Gaslamp Ball - August 4, 2005
I want to see 2 more runs
Just finish off the Pirates early. Let's get an easy one. It's been a while since we've had a really easy one.Dex - August 4, 2005
Not a lot happening now
It's like both teams just decided to cruise through the second half of the game.Dex - August 4, 2005
So did DJ move to CF now?
I'm so confused.teemcee - August 4, 2005
Yeah
it looks like Randa is at third so DJ is out in CF.I wonder why they took Roberts out?
16thkid @ Gaslamp Ball - August 4, 2005
He was probably starting to press
Defensively, he was distracted.Dex - August 4, 2005
Leitner
Hey he said "your Padres" even though they're winning. Was that a flub or is he switching that up?Dex - August 4, 2005
Maybe
he is switchig it up cause of the critism he got.16thkid @ Gaslamp Ball - August 4, 2005
He must be trying to work his way to a Frick Award
Dex - August 4, 2005
Woah they hit Duffy!
Nice. Redemption for tagging Olivo. You pick out their most productive dude and pop him one.I bet Duffy's a little bit pleased by that.
Dex - August 4, 2005
B-Law

They just pulled him
But I'm betting that was payback for Ojeda getting hit.Dex - August 4, 2005
Why do the Padres care about Ojeda being hit
Just kidding, Dex! I know what (who) you meant. Just a slip o' the keyboard, if you will.teemcee - August 4, 2005

I don't want game to be interesting. I want to see the Pads crush these guys.Dex - August 4, 2005

Three run homer. Settle down, Adam. That's OK. It's going to be OK.Dex - August 4, 2005

There was a game?
I was far too distracted by the ad to the left of the page saying "get the training you need to go deeper".I've just come out of my day dreaming to realize the morning's gone, the game's over, and I've been sitting in my office without doing a bit of work.
Emcee Emmerson - August 4, 2005
You missed the game?
Man. It was glorious.Dex - August 4, 2005
What's up with Eaton?
Anyone see the game and see what happened to him. Why did he suck so bad. Is his finger still hurtin? I wish I could see this game. They really need him back in the starting rotation, but not if he's going to give up that many runs.Cy Young 44 - August 4, 2005
On the radio
They were saying that Eaton didn't look comfortable throwing the curve. Like it was bothering his finger. They said essentially he was throwing changeup/fastball, and he wasn't locating the changeup. So they sat and waited for the fastball.Dex - August 4, 2005
Exactly what Dex said.
And a radio guy actually said that after his last 9th inning outting, Eaton said his finger was sore. They concluded that as long as the word "sore" is around after pitching an inning, don't expect Eaton back into the starting rotation any time soon. He just can't go that deep.Unless, of course, he clicks on the link for National Polytechnic, where he'll get the training he needs to go deeper.
Which is what I did today. And I'm grateful.
