High fives all around. Quick links as I have to get back to boning up on Bochy for this afternoon's Outta Left Field Challenge. If you're already coming to the game, then head out a little early, and catch the Bochy For Mayor Challenge.
Here's the quick links:
- If you're not one to check the comments, tfast went off on SI in the comments yesterday. I mean, went off.
- Ducksnorts mailbag digs up a reader who points out that our opponents are killing us at PetCo with doubles. On the one hand, it is disappointing, but on the other hand, we're still tied with St. Louis for the second best home record in the National League, so it's not exactly going to make me push my panic button.
- More on Astacio. I predict he makes one start at AAA before joining the big club. That is, assuming he doesn't get eaten by a wild animal while in Portland.
- Tom Krasovic, in the UT, calls Brian Lawrence Mr. Reliable. Yeah, but when B-Law has an off day. He really looks off. Maybe this is a PR push.
- Also, I finally got the rest of the pictures back from our Cooperstown trip, so I'll be posting those along with a little weird, quasi-interview I had with the VP of Education and Communication for the Hall.
Stuff to read while we waited with baited breath for jbox to post again.
Whats annoying about Lawrence
is that he will be absolutely unhittable through 6 innings, have only 80 pitches logged, and completely fall apart in the 7th, it really is a feeling for him.Case in point, he is also one to get jacked for big innings early if you can "get to him" before he finds his groove. Hes one of those guys that feels for that sinker throughout the course of the game.
I like BLaw but reliable...hmmm, thats a stretch, from a standpoint of innings pitched and durability (I don't believe hes missed a start this year has he?) yes, but in terms of what you get from start to start, hes a classic case of are we going to get dominant Lawrence or downright god awful 2 innings and hes gone Lawrence.

Thats all MHO of course.

It's also perception
When Lawrence has a tough outing, I think Average Fan is less willing to forgive him than say a Jake Peavy or Woody Williams. I'd say that fans look at B-Law more critically than even Trevor. And we all know how bad Trevor gets picked apart.

You're right
I think part of that is because he hasn't established himself for a year as a dominant starter. We look at Jake, we look at Peavy, in a sense they've earned the fans respect so if they have a bad outing, we are more forgiving.
BLaw, its almost the same feeling with Burroughs, but not quite, you root for him, and he is dazzling at times, but you get frustrated as all hell when he doesn't perform up to expectations.
I think BLaw is one strong year away from developing that confidence needed to make him a steady 15+ win pitcher. That's saying a lot but hes got great stuff, he locates well, and much like those Maddux type pitchers, he doesn't rely on heat to get people out. Its great for stamina and probably why he has been injury free and logs so many innings.
I'm rooting for him but as it stands, he a great Number 3/4 pitcher for our team and I can say with confidence that we have a great young "trio" to build a foundation from.
