I had downplayed 400 saves before, but let's be honest. Trevor Hoffman: Greatest closer in the history of the game. Dennis Eckersley? A setup man. Mariano Rivera? Not so much clutch. Eric Gagne? Yeah, Gagne's good if you need somebody to help carry Trevor's jock.
After the game, Trevor did a quick interview with Leitner and Flannery and his voice cracked when he talked about his parents. He could barely get through it as he thanked his mom and said that he knew his dad was watching from above with the best seat in the house. I swear jbox's eyes misted.
It's been a great year for the Padres, slow start and all. First Jerry in the Hall and now Trevor with 400.
Well done, Trevor! We'll go easy on you for a little while at least.

It's too bad
The rest of the world doesn't care or realize how important or great that milestone was. Sure, saves are not the glamour stat, but it is a mark of durability, consistency, and clutch. To get 400 saves, literally means when the game was on the line, you closed it out, 400 times you did. Think about that.ESPN Sports Center gave mention of it for 10 seconds, if that, and were so generous enough to give him a tiny little 400 save icon at the bottom of the screen, big whoopy. They were too busy talking about Steinbrenner's Yanks and his gay horse.

Truth be told
500 will be the real mark. Here are the career saves leaders. How many of those active closers really have a shot at 500 saves? Mariano Rivera? Maybe not with the way he's looked recently. Gagne? Too soon to tell. More and more I'm convinced that Trevor's a lock for the Hall.Steinbrenner's horse is gay?
